damn you. they are the one band i would travel anywhere in the world and pay just about any price to see. i got into them when i was 16, and by the time i was old enough to own a car and actually go out and see them, they broke up. i remember they were scheduled to play at the Middle East and i went to the Godflesh website to confirm the date, and it said "GODFLESH IS NO MORE". i check it weekly in hopes of one day seeing "GODFLESH TO PLAY ONE SHOW". i would probably die of a heart attack.

I agree totally on "Chaosphere". Its my fav meshuggah album, and i think there's really nothing else like it around. I had to write all of one of my favorite records (chaosphere) out in sheet music, it was an exercise an old drum teacher had me do to understand sheet music better. I learned how to play it too. Really slow, part by agonizing part. Fucking hard record.
I tried to do the same thing with "Nothing" and the first track off of it stumped me. "Stengah", fucking chorus in that song is SO hard, the little high hat/left hand shit he's doing while keeping the accents on the crashes with the guitars wierd time, and putting the snare on the 3 of every 4 AHHHHHHH!!!! I hate that part.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Sep 11,2008 2:11pm
i can play maybe 2 riffs off that album semi-confidently

This album and Slaughter at Vatican get routinely played for me.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Sep 11,2008 2:34pm
there are a couple parts on that album (chaosphere) that are very very difficult to get the timing for. The beginning of New Millenium Cyanide Christ is madness, there are a couple parts in the last song that are super groovy, and not too fast, but the rests are the odd groupings, like 2.5 beat rest, then after a couple beats of notes, there is a 3/4 beat rest. Its obserd. Took FOREVER just to write out. Well worth it though, now i find myself witting stuff very reminiscent of that album, so much like meshuggah that i wrote a part and (if you thought i was being cocky about saying i could play it, your not gonna believe this.) recorded it about a year before they released "Bleed" and the main riff at the begginning with the double bass triplet pattern in 3 with the hats in polymetric 4over it, is the same one i wrote. VERBATIM. while i admit that they definately didnt steal my shit, i obviously write just like him now.

even the lyrics on Chaosphere are hard to get, he doesn't sing in any kind of standard pattern. the drumming is what gets me about Meshuggah. that dude is a fucking machine. the entire song I is ludicrous.

thats because the album was recorded with a machine ... Modern Drummer i think was the magazine with the story about it and how the drummer was working the shit out of himself to play "bleed" as good as the recording

no way. seriously? Narky you gotta back me on this one, didnt i write the bleed beat exactely how he did? Same speed and everything! I almost dont believe that song was hard for him, its not that hard for me, but he definately has songs that are too hard for me. Wierd, i guess for different people different things are hard.

toggletoggle post by monster_island  at Sep 11,2008 4:27pm
its the issue with the drummer on the cover ... whats his name Hanke or something like that ??? ... im pretty sure it stated they always record with a machine and have the drummer learn the recordings ... dont remember if there was explanation as to why but i could only guess to save money and time ??? ... pretty lame if you think about it ...

be proud they had to rip you off with a machine !!

Aril... i was wondering what your getting at.. cause i am a white kid from suburbia, i know how to play my instrument, i wasn't rich, but i was from a rich town. (medfield) What i don't get is what that has to do with their music. I for one don't care what people do with their lives, if the music is wonderful, its wonderful. I mean, if you let what musicians did with their private time/how they live their life make a difference to you, you probably wouldn't like any blackmetal. A lot of those guys are pretty silly, dont get me wrong, i love black metal, but some of those guys are plain old silly.

has nothing to do with their music. I don't mind their music at all.
I just said it to fuck with people - they're one of the "newer" technical/death bands and they're just a bunch of young kids. I was surprised when I found out they were kids. the only thing I have against them is that I remember seeing on youtube a bunch of fanboys from california playing their songs on guitar.. and I can tell you the fanboys were people I probably wouldn't really like in real life.

but, if someone gave me a gorguts cd and the faceless album, i'd grab gorguts. The Faceless wouldn't exist with bands like that, though.

hold on Aril, not trying to be a pain, but what do you mean?
"The Faceless wouldn't exist with bands like that, though"
Honestly i have no idea what your saying there. And just for the record, EVERY band i like has a bunch of duchebag fans. You see 98% of people in the world are assholes. Fact. Give me a pencil and some paper and i can prove it. All i need is an etch a sketch and i can show my work. Fact bomb, people suck, cased closed....... so obviuosly most fans of every band will in fact, suck ballz.

And the faceless were all real nice, about my age (26) they just looked young, and into some awesome music. Real diverse, definately not the sorta shit you woulda expected.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 11,2008 5:32pm
100% agreed with the thing about assholes.
I guess the big point I'm trying to make has to do with the way death metal is evolving. I can honestly say I don't really listen to much "newer" death metal bands. I'm the kind of person that likes to connect the dots with music, because I like the history behind bands, their influences, their influences' history, etc. I love listening to all types of music, but have always held an interest in music's evolution. I'm actually somewhat out of the loop with NEW black and death metal other than older bands' newer albums.
Gorguts / Atheist, etc to me, will always be some of the best technical death metal. The Faceless are very technical, and they do it their own way.
I just like older stuff better. I suck, man.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Sep 11,2008 5:41pm

you are not alone ... i'm outta the loop too but still listen to old shit like it was still 1991 lol ... if i still owned a cassette deck id be listening to the box of old demos in the basement

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Sep 11,2008 6:25pm
strangely, I seem to be the opposite. Late 90's was a big empty spot for me in metal. I come from old school thrash but I dig the stuff some of the newer techy bands are doing. It's hard to put a finger on when it's done "right" since there is indeed a lot of trash out there too and it's hard to define what makes some trash and the rest not. Using the Faceless as an example, their new single is really really bizarre, and I can't say I liked it when I first heard it, but now I love it with the blatant dissonance. I'm definetely grabbing their next album.

Nothing was Tomas on drums, he recorded the album riff by riff, meaning he recorded one part until he got it down properly, then moved onto the next one.

I was pretty much done the same way.

Catch 33 was done with a drum machine, because they really didnt give a shit.

The newest one was with tomas on drums. Yes, it did take him 6 months to be able to play bleed perfectly....and then he recorded it. He did all the drum tracks at his house. Whichever guitarist wrote the song probably made a drum machine track so tomas would have something to go by, but what is one the record is tomas playing drums...albeit triggered to shit

"Sonic Excess..." is a VERY close 2nd for me. It's amazing how beautiful some of those riffs are, while still being the heaviest shit ever. Acid Bath is the only other band that pulls that off.

There's just a couple riffs on "Broken Glass" that are so heavy, that they literally make me have to poop.

He can do it... There is just little to no point in recording drums the way they sound in metal these days. They get triggered and have all dynamics covered up by the time the end of the recording process.

Saves a lot of time, money, and effort to do drums like that.

I am not saying I think all metal drums should sound "sterile". It is just that the sound they were going for had a huge short cut involved.
