Not that Herugrim is going on tour any time soon, but I was wondering what everyone's work does when a band goes on a short tour for, say, a week and a half to 2 weeks?
I have 19 PTO days at my current job and I've already used about half of those.
But, if I was going to be gone for a good 1 1/2 - 2 weeks i'd be risking my job. Too many consecutive days off.
How does everyone do it?

if i had it my way, i'd quit my job and be in a band all day.

unfortunately, if you're already feeling risky about that many days off, you'll probably have to either have a "sit-down" with your managers trying to explain your passion, or find another equally good yet more lenient job.

or do most bands who tour work shit jobs?
I asked Johan from Amon Amarth a few years ago what he did for a job back home and he SELLS CHEESE AT A SUPERMARKET.

toggletoggle post by aaron_michael  at Jun 16,2008 10:31am
Yeah, a good portion of band members I know who are constantly on the road either have good jobs that they've been at for years or have a managment position. Or they just jump from job to job everytime they come home.

People I know who can tour live with someone that helps with their bills (girlfriend or fiance or wife or parents) as well as having lenient jobs or shit jobs.

I can't tour. Way too many bills. FAIL.

I just tell em and if they have a problem i look for a new job.
problem solved. i work, i dont suck dick, dont shine shoes.

Do what I've done. Get shitty, useless jobs to tide you over between tours, go into debt on the tours, then come home and watch as most of America doesn't care.

Take a shower, go for a jog, repeat.

A lot of the bands that go on the mini tours are still in college.

With how bad the economy is getting, the whole touring and coming home to look for a new job thing probably isn't a good idea

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Jun 16,2008 11:55am
Look, McDonald's is always hiring and they pay pretty well. You could always go back to them or a grocery store or something.

Someday you have to ask yourself if you want to be a musician or if you want to play music for fun. If it's the former, you build your life around that and try to get your music to finance being alive. If it's the latter, you get a legit job and hope the band coincides somehow.

my job understood i might need time off when they hired me. i filled out a leave of absence request but my manager didnt even put it through. he just gave me whatever vacation time or personal days i had.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jun 16,2008 11:57am
with my current job - I think the ONLY 'tour' I could ever do is a select few shows scattered about for 4-5 days. anything more than that would be risking it.
time for a new job.

toggletoggle post by immortal13 at Jun 16,2008 11:57am
Job-wise, what I'm thinking when we start doing a lot of touring more than not, I was thinking about just working for temp agencies between tours. Sometimes they tend to be pretty lenient about those things. Either that or just landscaping.

I'm lucky with the job I have now though. My new boss has been cutting me a lot of slack for the band, even when I was outta work for 3 weeks for my surgery. He's still giving me the time off for the tour in July, and he said once those things start becoming a more common occurrence to let him know, so we can sit down and talk about what we're gonna do. He basically knows I'll happily leave that job if they ever try to interfere with the band, and he told me a little while ago I'm the best he's got there. I basically have it somewhat lucky for now anyway.

toggletoggle post by mOe  at Jun 16,2008 12:02pm
yea, my job is pretty lenient with the touring stuff it just depends on when it is. Since I work at a school, trying to do a tour in mid September would be a dumb idea and they wouldnt let me do it.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Jun 16,2008 12:04pm
some jobs will let you take a Leave of Absence

this is exactly why i know i'll never get fired. my job would rather have me gone 6 months out of the year then not have me on at all. hell i was just gone for 3 weeks or whatever and when i got back to the store shit was all over the place. i had no idea what was going on.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jun 16,2008 12:05pm
i don't think I'm in the right business for having a life outside of work.
Insurance. everything is always a rush and people want to kill eachother. if something doesn't get done then your job is in question.

toggletoggle post by immortal13 at Jun 16,2008 12:12pm
When I was gone for three weeks, I came back in to find nothing but a mess. Ever since my old boss got fired the place has gone downhill, the new asst. manager (who knows nothing about cars and openly admits it) is having a horrible power trip, the place is a mess and so much shit changed. I was the one who cleaned things up, told the asst. manager exactly how it is, got the other employees back in shape (I have seniority over a lot of people there, so I can do that as long as I'm nice about it, which I am), and just brought the shop back to somewhat normal, and that's what my boss loves about me. The fact that I take a big leadership role and I know what has to be done, so I pretty much know I'll only be leaving that job on my own decision, and trust me I don't wanna be working at a lube shop forever, so chances are once I get my inspection license (within a month) I'm gone.

toggletoggle post by dertoxia   at Jun 16,2008 12:13pm
psh get out of that shit. work should in no way affect your not work. like last night i got high and watched that movie RV with robin williams cause it was on tv and i couldnt find the remote. who the hell goes on a vacation with their family and then makes up ridiculous situational lies to go back to work. and another thing....when's rob schneider doing another movie? i havn't seen him in a while.

You have no idea. Every time some hot chick walks in, my reaction is something along the lines of "I'll give her a good lube any day."

Not so much. Things get kinda sticky sometimes though...

I think I failed that one.

so yeah i work at Staples and anytime some hot milf or some jailbait comes in i stand up front with the manager and we just come up with hilarious shit like "i'll ram her slot" or "i'll bet her hole reinforcer takes extra large fasteners"

toggletoggle post by immortal13 at Jun 16,2008 12:24pm

that is definitely a big thing to think about. i was going to relocate in a few months, but i've reconsidered staying for a while and waiting to see what happens. job and energy cost variables are too unstable right now.

I work for a shitty corporation (rent a center). I am so stretched thin with bills and my position (mandatory 48 hours) that all I'm left with is 80hrs vacation time a year. Which they are also dicks about. I'm not in a band but I do many shows (hip hop) from NH to MA. My boss is ok about letting me out early but I still rush to every show which I hate to do. But in march I did take 12 days which is unheard of and did a tour through NC, MD, NY, OH, IL, VA. Taking your paid time to sleep on floors is awesome. I get more time in September and all I can think of is going out again. But that's about it, if it was some extended thing I wouldn't be able to which is disappointing to think about. My life is about music and I'd like nothing more than to do it constantly, but wanting to have a decent car and a place to live fucks that up quick. I'd love to simplify and strictly perform, but what would I retire with?
