Bought a VHT 2/90/2 poweramp today and Channel A on it just died on me. I have to see what the damage is.

Anyone know any good techs around this area (im in taunton)?

I'll call up Boston Guitar Works tomorrow, not sure if they have a tech.

i can see if I can find anything in there for you... I'll take the multi meter to everthing and try to find a bug.

toggletoggle post by NoodleFace at May 9,2008 8:32pm
Alright.

Well Channel A still makes noise, just like 10% total volume. I have a fear that something on the board may have burned out. Definitely not tubes as Channel B is fine, right?

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at May 9,2008 8:34pm
how many tubes does it have total, 4 right? Unless they are riding the power tubes really hard it should share the tubes for both channels.

toggletoggle post by blue  at May 9,2008 8:44pm
dude, sounds like a tube failure. do the old 'tap the tubes with a pencil' to find out which is the culprit.

toggletoggle post by NoodleFace at May 9,2008 8:45pm
Too late to test them now I suppose, but i will in the morning.

Given that it's a stereo poweramp, perhaps each channel has its own set of tubes? I mean, they each have separate inputs/outputs for preamps and cabs.

toggletoggle post by blue  at May 9,2008 8:48pm
of course each channel has its own set.

toggletoggle post by NoodleFace at May 9,2008 9:14pm
I'll be so happy if it's just tubes.

toggletoggle post by blue  at May 9,2008 10:01pm
i betcha it is kid. happened once on my fitty one fitty, it was a bunk 12ax7. my prosonic just did the same thing yesterday at practice, im going to check it out tomorrow. i bet its the same thing.

drop in gain/volume means pre amp tube failure 8 times out of 10.

toggletoggle post by corpusILN at May 9,2008 10:21pm
dood i think the name is 'high tech'--they are out of the north shore i believe.
if i am wrong about the name then blue and i are using it for our radio gear show.

I'll have to pick up a 12ax7 tomorrow and hope it was my phase inverter then

Not to change the subject, but how would you change the input jack in a xxl?

toggletoggle post by corpus420 at May 10,2008 10:24am
flux capacitor.

toggletoggle post by BlackoutRick at May 10,2008 10:32am

you would obtain a soldering iron, and knowledge of electronics wiring.

i hope you're not serious.

HAI GUIZE SHOULD I NOTT PERFORM TEH ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON TEH MAP?

toggletoggle post by NoodleFace at May 10,2008 1:09pm
preamp tubes were not my problem. next course of action I believe is to bring it to a tech

toggletoggle post by blue  at May 10,2008 1:12pm
indeed sir. the only place i can recommend off the top of my head is aztech electronics in watertown.

toggletoggle post by Obvious at May 10,2008 1:50pm
Bring it to Your Mother!!! They're located in Fall River I believe.

toggletoggle post by NoodleFace at May 10,2008 1:54pm
Might actually be sending it to VHT

toggletoggle post by blue  at May 10,2008 1:55pm
ooooh la la. you buy it new?

toggletoggle post by NoodleFace at May 10,2008 2:27pm
No.. but I want to see if they'll work on it anyways. I know Mesa prefers to work on their own amps so I'm hoping VHT will too. Have to wait until monday unfortunately.

The problem here is it was definitely damaged during shipping because one of the rack ears is bent a bit and I saw pictures of it before it was shipped. The packing wasn't that great either, which is unusual for a guy like mctallica1. Oh well.. have to see what VHT says.

toggletoggle post by blue  at May 10,2008 2:40pm
i freaking hate it when people dont pack their shit right.

toggletoggle post by Niccolai   at May 10,2008 4:41pm

K. But how do you open the infernal machine up? It has 4-6 screws in the back but it doesn't open.

toggletoggle post by corpus_colostomy at May 11,2008 7:29pm
just ask it nicely....DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

toggletoggle post by BlackoutRick at May 11,2008 7:33pm
Please?

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at May 11,2008 7:57pm
remove the feet, I beleive they hold in the chassis. Slide the chassis out and solder in a new input jack. If you are close to me I can do this real cheap.

toggletoggle post by BlackoutRick at May 11,2008 8:21pm
Nashua and Thanks.

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at May 11,2008 8:31pm
nashua = far haha
