no more mesa dc-5. traded for a xxx with jj's, custom diamond plated grill and a crown case. sounds unreal with two vaders n shit!

I used to think that I hated this amp...but Cav has one and he managed to get a sweet sound out of it...then Suffocation plays them...I dunno, I might have to rethink my hate.

I cannot wait for my Bad Cat. Because of this thread I made a call to see if it's in yet.

nick tries to pull that on me all the time. and then i say to myself, suffo hasnt had that good of a guitar sound since they were using the (my) ampeg.

so many people say that peavey is garbage--that its not professional and that the shit they put out is full of crappy components, wires etc.
but I really like this amp and already, I have some settings I truly dig.
I read horrendous review after review of this amp on HC and all i can think is that from what I can tell, 3% of the death metal community actually know how to dial in tone.

i do believe that the jj 6l6's are responsible for taming and rounding off the fierce mosquito "buzz" that many say characterize this beast.

though tung-sol 12ax7s (in at least v1) are my lovers in the preamp.

and consequently, i continue to be un-impressed by 5150's/6505's.

i almost bought my friend's 5150 II until i saw the rackmount mark iv i was going to put a deposit on until my fucking headgaskets went. fuck my life.

his current rig is now unlike anything i have ever heard.

the mark 4 has a smoothness which cannot be achieved with a DC. the mark series is the classic mesa preamp circuit, where are the DCs are way more modern voiced: somewhat bridging the tonal gap between the marks and the rectos. its simply one of the most versatile heads i can think of.

considering that the only real difference in performance is the innate 'smoothness' that the mark IV has, you can save about seven hundred bucks getting a dc. the dc-5 is very much a sleeper "boutique" type in my mind, especially for brutal metal..it has that classic mesa sound with some tether to it's moded fender past, and an uncommon organic sweetness to it.

the only dood i knew of who used one was dood from fleshgrind.

i've got the quad preamp, which is the mk II and mk III preamps with an EQ matched up with the simul 295... thought the mk IV would have been a real cockflex

what do you use for settings? what channel do you use?

i have the same exact amp, same tubes...i use the crunch channel ( the lesser gain one) with the gain on about 4-5, the his around 5 the mids around 4 and the lows around 6. i use the channel volume at 3/4 of the way up with the amp volume a little under 1/4 of the way up. i recently got a basson 412 and i couldnt be happier with the sound going through that and the old peavey 412 i have with all 75s. i use an eclipse with emg 81s. amp sounds totally different with brians guitar.

also make sure your using the loose setting on the damping switch on the back, it sounds a lot bigger, fuller and cuts through the mix a lot better.

how much does that case go for? looks like some quality shit.

at the moment i have it on the tight setting--using the crunch channel. my settings this morning were: hair at 7, body at 4, bottom at 7, volume at 5, and had the master volume cranked! with only one vader this sounds very full and crunchy! i have a jackson sl2 usa with an emg 60 in the bridge.

i will experiment more with this "looseness."

I don't mind the 5150, but there are better heads. The XXX is definitely a nice head, as is the JSX (Joe Satriani signature model for those who didn't know). Peavey makes some pretty decent stuff, so I don't understand why so many people bash them so much.

I think Peaveys are rad - the 5150s and the XXX have three testes each fo sho... HOWEVER... whatever amp you are using... if you are not boosting with a (modded)Tube Screamer, you are a jive-ass motherfuckin turkey-talkin wack-ass honkey MOTHERFUCKER.

yea im not even sure why they have that option, im not even sure what it does i just know that loose sounds a billion times better than the other settings. what kind of speakers do the vader cabs have? i havent done any research on them.

ah same speakers at the basson. if you can get a 412 with some 75s in it the mix of the 75s and 30s really fills out the sound of the head. you my friend have good taste in gear.

the vader has 4 125 watt eminence legends.

It's awesome man. I love it. I'm running the Avatar 4x12 and the Orange along with it, so it isn't getting a lot of alone time. But I have jammed on it with it being the only active cab and I think it sounds great.

And goddamn, I love the recessed handles at the top...brilliant.

good cab, I was gonna buy it from mark when he was selling it....now I'm wishing i did so I could bring the Dc-5 home...
