seems like no matter what I do, I constantly get screwed over by my car

My old car needed repairs every 6 weeks or so for something different so I got rid of it, went to an upstanding dealership. Got myself a nice pre-owned 2004 Subaru Forester with 50K miles on it. Well, last week it was overheating so I had it towed to the dealership. Well, my radiator is toast (duh), but now they're saying my motor is in serious jeopardy. One of my cylinders isn't holding pressure and the rest of the cylinders are oil-logged as well as the sparkplugs. They wont know the extent of the damage until they pretty much dismantle the motor and call the warrantee company to see what they'll cover. I've had the car for exactly a year.

*readies anus, but isnt going down without a fight*

Yeah dude. I got a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee two years ago for 30 grand. The engine died two weeks ago. The best I could get for it is 4 grand. Fuck cars indeed.

It's because you're black. Little do people know but most car parts are made south of the Mason Dixon line.

i fix cars at my shop doods

toggletoggle post by mOe  at Jan 29,2008 4:46pm
FUCK
new radiator...like $700
BUT, they're trying to make me pay for the loaner they gave me...like $25 bucks a day since like a week ago. They're gonna cover two days, but are telling me i have to pay the rest. NO FUCKING WAY. The reason my car has been there so long is because it took em 3 days to even bring it into the garage to fuckin look at it. And they called me today to tell me what the damage was, which means this thing isn't gonna be repaired until Friday the earliest. That adds up to $200+ and I aint payin it.

toggletoggle post by SkinSandwich at Jan 29,2008 5:02pm

I don't drive, so your theory is out the window.

Of course you don't drive. That would be unsafe because women are horrible drivers. How did my theory go out the window? Did I say you drove a car? Your simple presence in or near the car is enough.

800 bucks just sunk into my lumina, that's the last of it right there. next thing that happens to it, im getting a new shitbox.

toggletoggle post by mOe  at Jan 29,2008 7:20pm
UPDATE
I sent a very nicely worded, but scathing email to everyone at the dealership and I recieved an e-mail from the general manager apologizing and waiving the loaner fee!

toggletoggle post by cav nli at Jan 29,2008 7:55pm
moe, are they just replacing the radiator? im gonna check it out at work and make sure they are charging you accurately. i work with a program that uses up to date part prices and fairly accurate times for repairs. we work more with auto body damage than engine stuff but i could still let you know if they are charging you accurately. ive done quite a few estimates with radiator damage and if im not mistaken 700 bucks seems pretty expensive for the part but im not sure how much time its gonna take to fix it.

toggletoggle post by cav nli at Jan 29,2008 7:57pm
if you could get me a copy of the estimate if there is one that would be super sweet but labor rates would be key too. i can compare them to the prevailing rates in the area which should be standard even though a lot of shops try to go higher, obviously

toggletoggle post by mOe  at Jan 29,2008 8:00pm
thanks, man....when I get an official estimate from them i'll letcha know

i need to get a car, and i am dreading it. i went through 10 cars in 8 years, and i know this one won't be much different.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Jan 30,2008 11:01am
I'd suggest one of these:

toggletoggle post by cav nli at Jan 30,2008 11:06am
i just checked this out moe, you should be looking about 300-350 (OEM NEW) for the radiator itself depending on the model of your car. and only about an hour or so to put it in. i looked up springfield, mass in our system and it came up with 35 bucks an hour. he might be charging you at a mechanical rate which is about 30-40 bucks more than the normal body rate. but yea man, your kinda gettin jipped. my trainer also told me that most of the time you can find an aftermarket or an lkq (recycled) radiator for about 100 bucks.

are you getting this done at the actual dealership you got the car?

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Jan 30,2008 11:08am
wooooo, yay cav

toggletoggle post by cav nli at Jan 30,2008 11:08am
when i said depending on the model i meant the model of forester, they have 3 different ones for that year X XS and XT.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jan 30,2008 11:50am
ull never get 35 an hour

yea the place i work at tries to get the lowest rates in the area, thats what we do, bring auto shop quotes down for insurance companies. but i got this rate from the system that just looks back into our system to see what people here used for rates in that area...its not an official rate from a profile. either way moe should be paying more like 4 and change rather than 700 unless theres a special circumstance that calls for more repair time.

Where's RDB when you need him?

toggletoggle post by mOe  at Jan 30,2008 2:53pm
thanks cav,
and yes, i'm getting this done at the dealership I bought it at, which most likely explains why i'm getting jipped. I'm also paying for some parts from the head gaskets that are also being repaired but the warranty people are handling that, so that could explain some of it too.
You're the man. Now I have to call them to see just how much its gonna be.

We're lucky in a way though, my cousin has his own garage and helps us out like crazy. If anyone's near Dartmouth/Westport, he's a car genius and won't bullshit you, especially if he knows I sent you and/or you like Slayer and Iron Maiden.

It's George's Auto Repair, 712 State Road in Westport

I had to hold off on half of our rent to try and have money for this repair and even that isnt enough to cover it.

definitely ask them for a hard copy of the estimate with part prices and labor rates and times. it at least makes them have to explain themselves. my guess is since its a dealership they are charging you like 100 bucks an hour for the labor as well as a markup on the part itself.

toggletoggle post by cav at Jan 31,2008 5:37pm
fuck that

toggletoggle post by mOe  at Jan 31,2008 6:01pm
it kinda makes sense...they're a dealership so the hourly charge is probably redic, also there's a $100 deductible from my warranty for the head gaskets, PLUS there's some parts for the head gasket that I guess aren't covered in the warranty

so yea
