i was thinkin more of:

Killswitch Engage
Unearth
Shadows Horrible
Trivium
blah blah, the "mall metal" stuff. I'm sick of hearing them on the radio and the worst is when i go to the mall. teeny boppin boys and girls sportin those shirts and hanging outside of Hot Topic. I have to see it everyday since I work at the mall and all FYE play is those bands. overated...

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Apr 19,2006 9:02am
I don't really ever hear anyone talking about those bands unless it's making fun of them, I don't listen to the radio or go to the mall. You need to find better stuff to do with your time.

I grew up on Napalm Death. I still love them but their political lyrics/views kind of piss me off. that goes for alot of bands i like. if they could just stop the bitching it would make them that much better but the music is good to me.

You live with Marsi? Have you ever "accidentally" walked in on her while she was taking a shit?

Anyways, check out Persecution Mania, Welcome to Hell, Pleasure to Kill, and From Enslavement to Obliteration. If you still think they're overrated, well, no more reach arounds from me sir.

my problem with DM is that almost none of it is creative, alot of is technically pleasing but there aren't songs there in my opinion... some people enjoy that style, i don't, i think for a style that has such good players they could write something that sounds a bit different from what 20000000000 other bands have been doing. I like Necrophagist because they go off and get all proggy and actually bring something new to the style.

Just my opinion, I don't think the style sucks I just dont think it deserves all the hype it gets.

first off. thinking they are overrated does NOT equal me hating them. I like a lot of Sabbath but I don't think metal as we know it owes 3/4 of its soul to them. Maiden has some good songs, I think they are just played out and I don't see the life altering allure of them. I can't stand Motorhead or AC/DC though. And stop acting like I am the only person that likes hatebreed. I like them and think they're overrated. Fuck you. So what.

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Apr 19,2006 3:59pm
Well, I have nothing to do with the Hatebreed debate.

Maiden and Sabbath had their days, but I don't find their careers to be highly consistent myself. Maiden still kicks ass on stage though.

(so does Motorhead!)

to a lesser extent, it seems like people are all about sodom and deathspell omega lately. not quite the same as the metalcore kids who all of a sudden love dragonforce, but it seems like over the last few months i've been seeing way more posts about sodom and deathspell omega. i'm not saying either band is overrated, i'm just wondering why they seem to be attracting throngs of new fans lately.

I like Necrophagist because they go off and get all proggy and actually bring something new to the style.

Just my opinion, I don't think the style sucks I just dont think it deserves all the hype it gets.

i stand by my recommendation to listen to more DM records. There are plenty of prog/tech DM bands out there that are on par with or better than Necrophagist.

cynic would be a good band to start with. they belong in the underrated thread.

My thoughts:

Clutch fucking sucks. I too saw that tour with them and Sepultura. I'd actually seen Clutch a few times before that too, opening for various bands. I thought they sucked wicked bad. Then I saw them a couple years ago headlining because they had a couple of good opening bands. They still suck. I don't get what there is to like about Clutch at all.

The Grammy's are totally gay and completely meaningless when it comes to metal. Who gives a fuck what some industry assholes think about metal?

Sodom is getting all this recognition now because they finally toured the U.S a few months ago for the first time EVER. Of course they're getting talked about more than ever before. And it's about damn time too.

Suffocation. Yawn. Back in the day they were just another death metal band. Now they're revered like gods by some people. I don't know why. Must have something to do with all the metalcore kids liking them.

Its true that metal does not owe 3/4 of its soul to Black Sabbath. More like 9/10.

pretty soon no one is going to listen to music anymore because everything will be labeled as "overrated". it seems that more and more people are listening to what would make them cool, as opposed to what they really like. like Dimmu and Opeth, now that they have fans, are deemed "overrated", and if you listen to them you are a trendy something or other. its sad that the sanctity of music has been defiled by arrogance. its fucking music.

Any band that tours outside of its home congressional district are sellouts.

To determine sellouts among bands that tour inside their congressional district if they drive to a show more than five miles from their basement they are overrated. If said band does not travel more than five miles but makes multiple copies of their cd-r demo it means that they are rich punks because they have a computer and a supply of ink and cd-rs and are therefore overrated sellouts. If a band can afford equipment they're sellouts too.

Some people actually just think Dimmu Borgir and Opeth have decreased in quality. I am one of them. And then some people have just always thought they sucked. Sorry.

I know what you mean about some people listening to what will 'make them cool', but on the flipside are just as many (no, MORE) rabid fanboys who will gush over a band no matter how miserable their output is/becomes because they too are striving for acceptance.

This polarity has always existed in musical opinion, it always will, and people will always listen to music until we evolve out of having ears.

i try not to be a fan boy about bands i like. i don't fool myself into liking subpar albums. i really enjoyed opeth's last album and thought it was much better than deliverance.

the new katatonia, on the other hand, was a disappointment. i like it, but it's definitely the worst album they've put out. all the fan boys act like it's their masterpiece, but it is so weak compared to their best albums.

I think it's just because for most people, the new Katatonia is their first Katatonia, since they are passive and wait for music to come to them. I think they've been going downhill for awhile now, I thought their peak was the knockout trilogy of 'Brave Murder Day', 'Discouraged Ones' and 'Tonight's Decision'. They still can come up with catchy riffs (a couple on the last two albums), but most of the records since 'Tonight's Decision' have been mild re-writes that often sound as if Katatonia wants to score the music for Laguna Beach or American's Top Model or something.

Black Dahlia Murder is seriously the worst. I saw that band like 3 or 4 years ago at Bills Bar when every metal kid, and metalcore kid was waterlogging their nuts with drool. It was one of the single most boring sets I'd ever seen. Watered down At the Gates riffs mixed with extra boring metalcore breakdowns you could have pulled out of Earth Crisis' stool samples.

My friend Frank put it the best way I can think possible to describe Black Dahlia Murder: "Every kid in that band was a complete and total nerd in their own unique way."

I went on Lambgoat that night and said I thought their set was boring. The thread got at least 50 replies from kids I didn't know calling me a faggot. OVER - RATED

Seeing as I'm one of the 2 that mentioned Sabbath, it has nothing to do with being overplayed. I don't listen to the radio to know if they are overplayed. Again I like them for the most part; I just don't think they are that good to deserve all the praise that metal heads give them.

Again . . . overrrated does not equal overplayed. and overrated does not mean the band is automatically hated.
