I'm a huge craft beer alcoholic, as my gut would suggest. Post your favorites here. While not a favorite, tonight I am having a 4-pack of Dogfish Head Olde School Barleywine. 15% abv- brewed with some figs and dates and shit. Not a huge Dogfish fan aside from the seasonal Punkin' and the 60 Minute IPA, but this release is solid.

Perennial Favorites are Stone Double Bastard, Avery Hog Heaven Barleywine, Sierra Nevada Celebration, Goose Island Lolita, Saint Louis Gueuze, Great Divide Espresso Oak Aged Yeti, Berkshire Brewing Raspberry Barleywine Style Ale, and Unibroue La Fin Du Monde.

What do you sorry bastards drink?

Any Allagash product, pretty much any Blue Hills Brewery product, Uinta's Dubhe Black IPA, Boulevard's Tank 7.

I'll also drink any good hefeweizen that crosses my path.

Since you like La Fin du Monde, you should look for Éphémère. Try visiting Dieu du Ciel if you\'re ever in Montréal.

Spencer Abbey is supposedly selling their Trappist beer this week...keep yer eyes peeled.

I'm not a sour beer guy, so I don't do gueuze. I've never had that BBC Raspberry Barleywine, but it sounds incredible. Every other beer you listed here is awesome, especially Olde School Barleywine.

I love Dogfish Head. A few years back, they were one of my favorite breweries. But now, for every good experiment, they release 2 bad ones. Sahti was awful, Pangaea was mediocre, that stupid Grateful Dead beer with granola in the mash. Awful.

My all times favorite is Avery's Mephistopheles. Best imperial stout EVER! You can sip a 12 oz bottle for an hour. Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout is a close second.

I also love Dogfish Head's Raison D'etre, Chicory Stout, 90 Minute I.P.A. and 120 Minute I.P.A.
Avery's Reverend, Salvation, and Hog Heaven.
Pretty much every beer ever released by Southern Tier (especially the Backwater Stout Series)

For stuff on the lighter side, you can't go wrong with Narragansett Cream Ale, Sam Adams Boston Lager, Porkslap Pale Ale, and Sapporo Reserve.

Honestly, I'm an uber beer geek. I could babble about it nonstop.

I brew my own. Best batch I ever made was a Belgian-style Quadrupel.
When me and my girl go on vacation in a few weeks, we're going to make three different beers. A chocolate stout, A strawberry red ale and a vanilla pale ale so we can have "neapolitan six packs".

We're also trying to find a flavor/extract that will make a beer taste like biscuits (english cookies, not dinner rolls) so we can make a "tea n' biscuits english ale"

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Jan 14,2014 10:06am
Oh, and that new Narragansett/Autocrat coffee stout is about 20 times better than I expected it to be

toggletoggle post by TimRiley at Jan 14,2014 10:19am
the BBC raspberry should be out in about 2 weeks i'd say. it's a February annual limited release for valentines day or whatever. I was never a huge fruit beer fan, but this one is just unbelievable. it tastes so fresh- like you picked up a handful of wild raspberries and munched on them. not that sweet either, which is good.

Looking forward to trying Spencers trappist stuff, that will be fun.

....about your tea biscuit ale... vanilla extract is the obvious as you know, but i guess the hard part is finding how to get that buttery note to it. hmmmm.

Avery's Mephisto is great. Just had my most recent one a couple weeks ago. Did NOT like the Samael's oak aged. It tasted a bit off- like a homebrew that succumbed to a bacterial infection. Maybe it was just the way they aged it on the oak. yuck.

if you like dark brews, which it seems you do indeed, i highly suggest THIS if you haven't had it-

Still wondering if it would be worth it for me to make the quest to Three Floyds this year for Dark Lord Day. I've never even had any Three Floyds stuff and it bums me out that they don't distribute to MA. Been wanting to try Gumballhead for a long time. Plus, I missed out on the Ragnarok which was the "Amon Amarth" influenced beer. Not a huge Amon Amarth fan by any means, but I still wanted to try it.

Tim, The raspberry barleywine sounds awesome.
Have not yet tried Labyrinth, but I'll definitely give it a shot.
I am definitely a dark beer guy.
Stouts, porters, Belgian dark ales, brown ales, black lagers/schwarzbier, definitely my favorite styles

I was thinking vanilla extract and lactose sugars for that homebrew.
But it would still be missing something. Not sure what else to add.

The "Demon Ale Series" in general is pretty awesome I thought.
I dig Samael. Beast definitely has a bit of off flavor, but I think it's intentional.
Extensive barrel aging typically does lead to naturally occurring brettanomyces.
Which is part of what gives sour beers their flavor.
Typically, I hate that, but for some reason, It works in a high gravity grand cru.

Yeah, I've heard great things about Dark Lord. I'd love to try a bottle, but I'm not really willing to travel for it.

I just set up a little beer cellar in my basement storage, experimenting with aging some stuff for a few months to a year. I have very little clue as to what I'm doing outside of temperature/humidity control so I'm not throwing anything too expensive down there, currently I have a bottle of Night Shift Taza Stout, Guinness Extra-Stout, two bottles of Mystic Auerbach's Rauchbier, and Lindeman's Cassis Framboise plus a bottle of Necromangocon mead (which will probably be drunk sooner rather than later). Sean wants to try aging some Flying Dog Amber Lager too

Gifted some bottles of Night Shift Bee Tea and Sea Glass and some Idle Hands Dubbel Dimples, haven't tasted the Sea Glass but the Bee Tea was a hit and I enjoyed the Dubbel too.

I've been on beer hoarding binge. I wish I had a place to cellar. Of recent drinks to have been drank...

Last night I had Lost Abbey's Red Poppy Ale. A cherry, oaked, sour. Similar to Duchesse De Bourgogne. If you like sour, I highly recommend it.

For something more normal, I recently had the Heavy Seas winter ESB. I drink so many extreme styles of beer, it was to have something that just straight up tasted like beer but still had big flavors.

I also saw Stone was putting last year's Vertical Epic on the shelves again.

The best beer I have had recently was Trillium's Congress Street IPA. I got a growler from the brewery. Up there with Heady Topper among the top tiers of IPAs.

Posbleak. Imperial Stouts, and anything over 9 percent alcohol ages well for at least 5 years.
Aging mellows strong alcoholic flavors.
Alcohol strength brings out certain flavors, but hides others.
A fun experiment is to get a bottle of one of your favorite high alcohol beers and age it for 4 or five years, then buy a new bottle of it and taste them both on the same night.

toggletoggle post by chrisREX  at Jan 16,2014 1:43pm
I bought an extra 4-pack of Goose Island Bourbon County to try the aging game.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Jan 16,2014 2:29pm
^good choice for aging. And anyone that tells you otherwise because of Goose Island getting bought out by AB-InBev is wrong, they only distribute it and the beer is still made in Chicago.

toggletoggle post by chrisREX  at Jan 16,2014 2:32pm
Goose Island does incredible work with those stouts and their fruity saisons, but besides that, most of their regular six pack stuff sucks. And this was before InBev money.

But to your point, yes, Bourbon County Brand is some heavy, next level shit.

it is by far the best.

Chris, Bourbon County is a great choice for aging!
Even after they age it in barrels, it still has a bit too much "alcohol heat".
I had a bottle I aged for three years. Perfection.

All the ultra high gravity stouts (Bourbon County, World Wide Stout, Mephistopheles) are better after a few years.

Also, those special yearly releases from Newport Storm (the big blue bottles with the last two digits of the year it was released printed on the bottle) all aged well.
I'm lucky enough to have had at least two bottles (one fresh and one aged for a year or longer) of every "vintage" except the 00 and the 12.

If there are any bottles of the 13 left, get on it. Delicious coffee stout.
