Was the season 3 GoT premiere any good?

Season two was fucking ABYSMAL in about a million different ways, hoping the show will be decent again like it was in the first season.

I thought the episode was the worst of all episodes thus far.

toggletoggle post by Spence at Apr 1,2013 8:09am
Really? Tragic.

The show HAS the brilliant actors, the amazing locations and sets and all that, the excellent soundtrack, the fanbase to keep the show going and the plot/characters to make a brilliant series. How the hell they fucked it all up, I have no idea.

To be honest I don't really remember much of last nights episode of Game of Thrones.....I will have to rewatch it again.

The walking dead finale was terrible. 10 minutes of action, 50 minutes of commercials.

I started watching Game of Thrones but was so tired I fell asleep.

Just watched the Game of Thrones episode.

Samwell stuff: Yawn. Giving what they HAD for material, they really dropped the ball by skipping over something so exciting. I wanted to see a wight bear take down like ten men.

Jon Snow: Man is Ygritte obnoxious. Mance Rayder is definitely NOT what I pictured in my head, nor is Tormund, but oh well. Decent enough scene, but felt kind of yawnfestish as well.

Sansa: Ugh, just ugh. The girl who plays Sansa is a great actress, as evident from the first season, but I swear in the second season and apparently now D&D just spoonfeed her uselessness. At least in the books she was interesting in King's Landing. Also, major lol @ Ros and Shae. Seriously, what are the people behind this show thinking? I also got to love Littlefinger spilling his ideas and whatnot to Sansa this early on, ruining any ambiguity as to what he's planning. Especially since the readers don't actually LEARN LF is working to remove Sansa from KL until after the Purple Wedding.

Robb/Catelyn: Yawnfest. This is why Weasel Soup and the correct Roose Bolton should have happened.

Bronn stuff: HURRAY TITS

Tyrion stuff: Pretty solid. Peter and Lena and Charles Dance are all great and the scenes were pretty cool.

Marg/Joff: Kind of pointless scenes, especially since the show has already established Marg as a schemer and not the kind hearted 17 year old she is in the books.

Dany: Necessary scenes, but still kind of lacking any real spark. Also, Barristan Selmy's reintroduction was shit.

I think that covers it all. At least there was no Bran scenes. Likely going to watch the Red Wedding related episodes later on in the season, but that's it. This show is so garbage.

I am feeling good so I don't remember names, but the fucking imp's hired killer should have FUCKING KILLED the dude that fucked up the imp, I was waiting for that, such a fucking tease. Now that John Snow has sorta changed guards, he needs to fucking bang that wildling broad.

Melisandre, and yes, I would totally put it to her.

Spence left out Davos Seaworth's return to Dragonstone and his confrontation with Melisandre in Stannis' presence. That was what I was looking forward to the most, seeing Stannis' emotional state, in the aftermath of the Battle of Blackwater.

The guy who attacked Tyrion(Ser Mandon Moore) was killed by Pod on the Blackwater, the guards with Cersei that Bronn were threatening were different members of the Kingsguard.

Oh yeah, so many plots it's hard to keep track. I thought Davos's return was pretty terrible. Him on the rock was mih, could've been done slightly more dramatically. Then with Sallador San, is he really leaving the plot now this early? Kind of makes me wonder why the show bothered introducing him in the first place. (although, to be fair, he is supposed to have a major role in TWoW so maybe it'll make his return even more stunning)

The guy who plays Davos is a great actor when Davos is being Stannis's straightman. When it comes to showing serious emotion like fear(when Mel was giving birth to the shadow baby) or batshit rage(wanting to kill Mel) he kind of sucks.

The ACTOR who plays Stannis, however, did an excellent excellent job at showing Stannis in his deep depression. He redeems the rest of the Davos scenes.

Fuck, totally forgot that dude was killed on the battlefied, I just want to see that one knightsguard with the beard get killed.

I think Nekronaut's looking for a date or something, no thanks dude, I only like broads.

I was psyched to see Ciarán Hinds play the wildling chief (he was Caesar in HBO's Rome). Peter Dinklage and Charles Dance are fucking fantastic actors too. I definitely felt like the show was pandering to nu vogue fantasy cliches at most points as it always has, but having not read/don't plan on reading the books, and considering that it's the only decent mature fantasy show around with no commercials, I don't give a fuck. Actors performances usually make up for any plot/adaptation failures (usually the case on any show)

toggletoggle post by Spence at Apr 2,2013 12:05pm
Any real reason you're not going to read the books?

toggletoggle post by ÆRK at Apr 2,2013 12:25pm
way too many other books out there. nothing against the author but the show is enough for me.

toggletoggle post by Spence at Apr 2,2013 12:30pm edited Apr 2,2013 12:31pm
Eh, kind of bullshit logic IMO.

If you have a choice between reading about 5,000 pages or watching 80+ hours of a TV show which is a painful, cookie cutter adaption... would you really pick the adaption? (I say 80+ hours because each season is ten hours, the show will be at least four seasons and most people watch shows they like at least twice)

I just don't understand the logic. But whatever floats your boat.

Not really. I just think it lolzie when people prefer copouts. It's no big deal though, could be MUCH worse. I have a friend who now refuses to read Les Mis because she saw the movie and doesn't "have the time" to read a book. People like THAT are eyeroll worthy.

At least "I have a long list of books to read already" is valid.

spence, why should she read the book? if i saw othello with lawrence fishburne, am i losing anything important in my life, some spiritual enlightenment by not reading the original? a copout infers that it's a failure of responsibility, which it isn't. maybe she really doesn't have the time. a lot of people don't have the time or the attention span to sit down and stare at a tome. it's a major timesink proposition for someone to break out of their habits and get into a book. a lot of people can't do it. and i contend she isn't missing a damn thing by not reading the book.

game of thrones isn't some classic work of literature that's required reading in school, it's high fantasy crap written with vivid language and some socio-political commentary. i have read some of it, it's entertaining, but there's plenty of media to consume out there, and i've read my share of fantasy. GOT is a good soap opera to sit down with my girlfriend and see some good acting (which I always enjoy watching).

it reminds me of when a member of an older generation says "you listen to band X when you've never heard miles davis??" and you know what, why should they have? some people just have the will to dig deeper in some areas more than others.

toggletoggle post by ÆRK at Apr 2,2013 4:20pm
and you know spence, pulling out a generational card here, it's AMAZING to see game of thrones at this level of popularity with your generation. in the 90's, when i read my wheel of time and my sword of truth etc. I was THE ONLY ONE. ONLY.

and i know you picked out the part of my comment where i said i had no desire to read the book because you were heavily invested in it and wondered why someone would say that. there isn't a whole lot of reason other than the amount of media bombardment out there today is insane and it's a zeitgeist of your generation. i can speak for aril, dude works in boston and has a kid and i don't know how he does it, but totally understand that he would pass out at reading a couple pages. it's really not something so simple. that's why HBO makes shows. ....rant over

and yes aril, i caught that and know you would appreciate any sports management stuff.

toggletoggle post by Spence at Apr 2,2013 4:54pm
I just think the "not enough time" excuse specifically is bullshit. Obviously some people literally have NO time between their three kids, two part time jobs and college classes and whatnot.

But this girl specifically, spends about four-six hours a day on Facebook and Tumblr. That's what I meant, I guess I should've clarified.

Also yeah, i'm amazed by how fucking huge Game of Thrones has become. Although, to be fair, the books were bestsellers and George RR Martin sold out his booktours and whatnot before even the show came out. (although, that's largely due to HP and LotR making everyone love fantasy and ASOIAF being one of the few fantasy franchises that exploded during this window)

And you're right, ASOIAF isn't classic literature. But I get the impression that if A.) the fandom maintains and B.) the books ends in a way that makes MOST people happy, that it WILL be classic literature in thirty years.

Also, your music comparison falls on deaf ears. Most people who "don't have the time" to check out a band or album or whatever either just don't give a fuck, are forgettful or are just all around lazy and uninterested in expanding their tastes. It takes 30 minutes to give a band a good try. For books, it takes about a hundred pages at the least - which for many people could take hours. However, reading IMO doesn't require much effort when compared with television, so if you're going to be seeing or reading something and either way will be wasting HOURS and hours of your life... why not just go with the original?

Obviously everyone can do what they want with their past times, just like how i'm not going to start watching sports any time soon, but it's just something interesting to think about.

So what if AERK decides not to read the books? Does the fate of the world hinge upon his decision to read or not read a certain book series? Seems odd that someone would get so worked up over another person deciding what they choose to do with their personal time. If you want to read the books and watch the show, then do so. If other people choose not to, I don't see why sleep should be lost over their personal decisions.

Basically what I'm trying to say is this...

WHO GIVES A FUCK?!?!

I said you were. Obviously you agree, with the way you just phrased your question.

If it wasn't a big deal, you wouldn't have posted several times in this thread, letting everyone know your opinions on the matter. Also, when you say it seems like "bullshit logic" to you, it gives off the impression that this is srs bizniss

Nah, it's really not. I was just having a conversation. It's always interesting to me why people do or don't do certain things, why someone does or doesn't like certain things, etc.

But i'll stop that and post shitty black metal and cockjokes instead. That's what the internet's all abouuut.

As a man, I put my time into what I value and what I will get the most return out of. Reading a fantasy novel series nets me very little return. It is a solitary endeavor that would take me quite some time, time which I could invest into things that I would rather do. Time that will net me further enjoyment and success in my life. I'll just watch the show instead and read shit that nets me improvement or further success in my endeavors.

I second ARK's opinion.
