Anyone like to camp in the winter? Or are you guys pussies because you can't bring your house heating with you?

know of any places that are good to camp in the winter? Granted, the best places to camp are in the true wilderness, but I'm looking for a campground. I know there's a few up near Conway NH which never close. I'm thinking about checking some out with the gal this winter. Any recommendations?

Also, an excellent site: http://www.campmor.com

I was going to say the green mountains and ask what gear you had until I realized you were a pussy. Winter camping = bring a shovel and go off trail 100 feet you pussy.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Oct 31,2011 7:17am
Burnside Park seems to be the real hot spot to camp in Providence right now and it looks to last into the winter. No fees to pitch your tent and close to lots of food.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 7:18am
I've got enough gear, but need a liner for my sleeping bag.
And LOL at going 100 feet off of trails, fuck that.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 7:20am
The only problem is that my mummy bag is a little short for me. I need a long one, but the one I have now will suffice.

toggletoggle post by AndrewBastard  at Oct 31,2011 7:52am
I'll tell you this much...IT SUCKS.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 8:00am
How? Campfire + snow or cold air = awesome

toggletoggle post by AndrewBastard  at Oct 31,2011 8:14am
its just miserable...i know it seems kult or viking to want to do it but its not enjoyable. Sorry.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 8:19am
Nah, I don't want to do it for that. I just want to hike in the winter or perhaps cross country ski. Wouldn't hurt to have a base or a place to crash. Just gotta be prepared.

toggletoggle post by AndrewBastard  at Oct 31,2011 8:23am
hiking in the winter is cool but after a day of winter hiking, the sun goes down, believe me you'll want to be indoors.

But go for it..its worth doing at least once.

I did it at the base of Tuckermans to go snowboarding once and it was pretty brutal. Whiskey helped.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 8:41am
Lets do it. Just get a sleeping bag and liner

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Oct 31,2011 8:43am
No can do, I only sleep naked in 70 degrees with no sheets year-round.

toggletoggle post by BSV at Oct 31,2011 8:44am
I need snow shoes, winter suit, sleeping bag, tent, socks and thermals. unless we have an amazing winter and I'm plowing tons, ain't gonna happen soon.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 8:47am
Tent could be shared. I've got a 6 person tent.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Oct 31,2011 8:55am
Oh, well now I see where this is going.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 8:56am
Get your mind out of the gutter, Mengsk.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 31,2011 9:03am
there are 4 season 6-person tents? I never knew. I've been in the woods hiking/camping in winter and I loved it. Carry your shit with you, bring tons of butter and don't plan to go more than 2-3 miles in 8 hrs. Once you break down, pack up, you can't go very far before you have to set up camp again. Especially if the snow is deep.

wait til the ice comes, i know a small island on a lake that's close. we'll make an ice fishing trip out of it.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 31,2011 9:25am
I have all the gear for it, but no time. artic shell boots, shell gloves, crampons, -25 bag, 3+ season tent, etc... the only problem is that my snow shoes had their bindings chewed by a dog. I need to get that fixed.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 9:25am
Sounds sweet. Camp on the island, cook fish thats caught.

toggletoggle post by BSV at Oct 31,2011 9:26am

If anyone's interested I'll be going on a hike of the Appalachian in NH and VT this December, wearing some jeans and a Graveland tshirt I borrowed from Kim Kelly. When it gets cold I've got a Temnozr long sleeve. You'll have to bring your own tent because I'll be making a lean-to out of branches and shit based solely on what I remember from scouts like 15 years ago.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 31,2011 10:59am
there are 3 hints I can give you for winter hiking/camping.
1) bring a bunch of sticks of butter, cook everything with a stick of butter in it.
2) the water from pasta makes the best hot chocolate especially with a stick of butter
3) wrap piece of pizza in tinfoil and put them in all your pockets.

toggletoggle post by bobnomaamrooney at Oct 31,2011 11:05am
1) Leave note on your car windshield telling passersby that you're a woman hiking alone.
2)Go for a brisk hike in Franconia Notch
3)Get stabbed to death by a Québécois trucker.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 11:15am
LOL

Then the trucker can use the butter as lube for his necrosex.

winter camping is the fucking worst. hike, sweat, freeze. I'm from the white mountains and never understood what possessed the retards who'd end up on an air lift to dartmouth.

toggletoggle post by sigh at Oct 31,2011 11:19am
Fuck that shit man! There is nothing manly about tenting in the winter. Don't be a dumbass. Rent a cabin somewhere, have a fire, get drunk. You'll enjoy it more. I've been out on the trails after the sun goes down with full winter gear on and you can still freeze.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 31,2011 11:29am

is it worse than sleeping on my floor with no blankets or pillow or anything? what a douche I am...

I dont remember shit from that night...did we walk from the space to my house with me in a t shirt? i left my bag and hoody at the space.

Tuckerman's sounds like a sick trip..carrying a snowboard sucks in the wind but worth it. Just gotta have the right gear, snowshoes, avoid sweating if at all possible, and line your pockets with pizza and butter. That right there is a capitol idea rev.

I went for 3 days in the green in either january or february. It was awesome, but on the way back we walked down one of the ski-hills and the girl in the party slipped and tore her LCL.

Sleeping in my freezing cold house with no electricity right now is kind of like camping.

I recommend the Green Mountains for ultimate brutality. When I was in middle school, they used to make us go on a camping trip every year... in mid October... in Vermont. Try a couple of days of sleeping in a lean-to and climbing Mount Mansfield when it's cold enough to snow, and you're only 12 years old. I think they consider that child abuse nowadays.

I wasn't saying they're aren't any people out their that find it enjoyable. I enjoy being in the mountains too but spending the night in the woods of Maine or New Hampshire in the middle of winter is not my idea of enjoyment. It's extremely risky. That is usually a last resort when things have already gone wrong and survival has become the priority. It gets cold quick once that sun goes down especially if you've been sweating. Entirely doable yes, but you're choosing to put yourself into a potentially bad situation.

And you can do all these things and still stay in a small cabin with a wood stove. Just saying sleeping outside is unnecessary for what you are going to do.

This man speaks the truth. I love being outdoors, whether upland bird or duck hunting, fishing open water or ice-fishing. Been out in nasty conditions in all instances. It's just much better to come indoors at the end of the day, get dry, and get drunk.

You see that right their is the problem. I know you think it will be fun. But trust me, it isn't going to be as fun as you think when you've got no fire and you're huddled together to share warmth. How much practice do you have making fire? What about with wet materials? Assume you lose your lighter, did you bring a fire steel and some dry tinder? Do you have a survival saw to cut dryer wood from higher up on the trees? Bring any thermal blankets? There is a lot more to being prepared than packing a sleeping bag, a tent, and some pieces of armpit pizza. Part of being prepared is knowing your limitations and respecting the situation. Speaking from personal experience my advice is to enjoy winter but do it safely and comfortably whenever possible.

For what it's worth.

In topography, prominence, also known as autonomous height, relative height, shoulder drop (in North America), or prime factor (in Europe), categorizes the height of the mountain's or hill's summit by the elevation between it and the lowest contour line encircling it and no higher summit. It is a measure of the independence of a summit.

Below is an except from a ranking of US peaks by prominence.
