If so, SHOW YOURSELVES! I've only heard talk of one... and I forget their name....

I'm thinking of starting one up or joining one if someone needs a guitarist. Keyword: "thinking". (Taunton/Fall River/New Bedford/Buzzards Bay areas)

ahh ya, i remember Shark Bites, those things were the shit. I loved the white ones (they were Peach flavored...)

yes, currently recording. We have a clip up of guitar and drums and will have everything up soon.

oh yea, I live right near that area that you described but we're not a live band right now.. Good luck finding people. that area sucks for finding metal musicians

toggletoggle post by Moonlit Forest at Feb 15,2010 11:03am
actually, things have worked out for me, ive found 2 drummers (one of which plays a variety of other instruments) and im sure we'll have a demo out by the end of the year.

i know what youre saying though: this area is chock full of Pantera worshipers and NWoAHM fans......

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 15,2010 11:07am
In 3 hours you've found 2 willing drummers? for some odd reason, I find that hard to believe!

toggletoggle post by Hungtableed at Feb 15,2010 11:10am
I don't know if you wanna group one of my one man bands in that category, but here it is:

http://www.myspace.com/abhasa

I'm working on some new shit now for a demo.

toggletoggle post by Moonlit Forest at Feb 15,2010 11:11am
nah, i already had em lined up, but, neither are looking to strictly do folk/pagan/viking metal. one favors deathcore the most and the other favors progressive metal. theres gonna be some compromising...which i dont like. so i may end up just saying "fuck it" and home record as a one man band. did someone say Falkenbach?

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 15,2010 11:22am
Interesting hungtableed, I'll have to check that out after work.
moonlit - depending on what you're aiming for, a "Viking" band from America is sonewhat loony. as much as I love Viking stuff and am part swede, I'd be a fool to be in an American band that labels themselves as a Viking band. That genre label should solely stay in northern Europe, if you get my drift. It'd be less foolish sounding as a heathen or pagan band. but If you're going to label it pagan, then hopefully you're a practicing pagan or at least know about it's ideals.
Just my 2 cents - I know it technically doesn't matter

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 15,2010 11:26am
It's the same thing as being part of an abrahamic religion and being in a black metal and that preaches about misanthropy and Satan. it's just blatant hypocrisy if a band preaches a message or image and isn't part of what they preach about

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Feb 15,2010 12:16pm
aril that new clip sounds real promising, especially the last 3 seconds, didn't see that coming. SM:0

ya, im mainly speaking about musical styling, so, if you want to be a super technical music snob, you could say Metal with Celtic & Nordic themes/melodies.

dont forget... its all for show.

Viking metal is no less authentic or appropriate here than it is anywhere else, same as I'm no less a Viking than the cheese merchant from Amon Amarth is.

Also pagan is a synonym for heathen.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 15,2010 3:06pm
And "paganism" doesn't exist as a monolithic enitity, much less have any "ideals".

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 15,2010 3:38pm
I think the imagery and aesthetics expressed in "Viking" metal bands shall solely stay within the boundaries of real Viking influence and/or heritage. It is like how if a straightedge band preaches about being straightedge, but most of the band broke edge. It's a blatant hypocrisy to express specific values in the message of the music and not be a part of what you're talking about. Thy doesn't mean you can't do it (it is about the music after all) but it's a sure sign of a false act. Why be an artist if you're not behind what you're painting? Be real about what you preach, or represent everything that is wrong with metal today.
If there's a "Viking" band from Florida preaching about the ancestors they didn't have, I won't listen to it. Falkenbach has gotten much shit over this issue over the years.
As far as the pagan issue goes , I think you missed the point. Paganism is indeed another word for heathenisn, as defined by its use as a generalization among Christian or other monotheistic beliefs. When I listen to "Pagan" metal, Id prefer that the band actually be practicing "pagans," whether it be wodanism or other forms. Too many shitty-ass "pagan" bands throw that term around today. I never wanted Herugrim to be coined as a Viking or Pagan band, as we didn't fit the qualities of what I thought should represent those genres.

In short, use HEATHEN or FOLK if you want to give in to the douchebag metal fans like myself.
People should be real and true to their art, or, sadly, they'll just be another brick in the wall.

That doesn't mean a band can't be influeneced by such acts. I'm merely talking about genres and labels here, a subject often scoffed at.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 15,2010 3:49pm
Or maybe metal is just one giant joke and everyone is in it for the ride.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 15,2010 4:31pm
No Swedes in Florida? Steve Asheim would be kinda surprised to hear that, I bet. LOL

toggletoggle post by mutis  at Feb 15,2010 4:40pm
There's certainly nothing wrong with having a Viking theme, at least from a local historical perspective; it is very likely that the Norse settled and explored part of New England via the St. Lawrence River.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 15,2010 4:43pm
lol.
Honestly, the argument could go both ways easily. if I'm in a goregrind band that promotes a violent/gore message but never murdered somebody myself, that doesn't mean it's fake. I just hold these genres of metal in a different regard than some others.
Something just doesn't sit right with me if I see a "Viking" band (with props and all) from Kansas.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 15,2010 4:46pm
Mutis: of course; I've even pondered writing a song about dighton rock and its disputed origins.

Moose worshiping folk metal or do a ritual about it.

only Pilgrim Metal is real.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Oct 26,2010 9:18am
Viking metal is fantasy metal, folk can be played by anyone at anytime, and pagan just means you're not monotheist.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 26,2010 9:34am
Heritage Metal.
I'm pretty sure Seth started this thread too.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 26,2010 9:48am
And yes, an American folk black metal band would be the shit. I mean banjos, mandolin, fiddle, etc. I wish there were more folkish musicians around here who would be willing to collaborate with extreme metal.
