The internet.
If you want something wicked simple just boil or steam some kale, then roast it in the oven with some cheese on top till the cheese caramelizes.

here's one - steamed broccoli

Mashed cauliflower and garlic (not too much garlic because it overpowers the cauliflower) and butter.

You have to steam the cauliflower.

I don't agree with vegetarianism from a dietary standpoint. I get from a moral standpoint but there are ways to get meat that was treated well and killed with uh... dignity.

Either way, vegetables taste good.

Yeah, by either killing it yourself or paying a fucking fortune for free-range meat. I'd rather just not eat it.

Besides, how can you disagree with what someone else wants to eat?

toggletoggle post by aril at Nov 30,2009 11:27am
They do. I love all food.. But ribs and a nice steak are too good for me to quit eating meat. I had chicken fried steak the other night with some nice fried okra and veggies. okra is great.

I thought I'd miss steak and stuff, but I don't. I dunno...just not for me.

I'm healthier than I've ever been, I've lost almost 50lbs in the last year (killed all the baby weight and then some) and I actually know what foods give you iron, protein, etc. I know way more about food than I ever did, and I'm even starting to like cooking.

Best decision I ever made after quitting smoking. You can all lick me.

Well, I'm not going to get into dietary things here because I'll just get trolled. I will agree that if you're eating vegetarian, you are MUCH MUCH healthier than the standard american eating the standard american diet. As for it being the HEALTHIEST - I disagree. Though I can't say that each person should be eating the same kind of diet.
And yes, it is possible to get what you need for macro- and micro-nutrient intake from vegetarianism but you're probably missing out on some good ole saturated fat. Unless you eat like two avocados a day and only use coconut oil to fry things.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that a lot of veggies eat like shit and get all snotty on other people as if they're eating healthy just because they don't eat meat. Eating well IN GENERAL is a lot of work and requires you know really know what you're eating. I think it's pretty cool when people know what they're putting into their bodies regardless of whether it's the diet I chose for myself.

I don't give a shit what anyone else eats. But the 300lb bitches I've met that try to tell me they are veggie and eat well drive me insane.

Woah, I was never trying to offend or anything. Like you said, I respect any decision to want to eat healthier. Especially if it's ACTUALLY healthier.

Last time I ate meat was nov 1998, chinese chicken fingers. From 1994 to 1998, I would eat a mcchicken or chicken fingers 2-3x a year. I went to eat a mcchicken in the beginning of june 1999 and never got one. Never looked back. Between that time, I had to snap the neck of a retarded turkey to put it out of it's misery. That was enough for me.
from 1989 to 2003-ish my friend and I had a bet to see who would go with out eating red meat the longest. I won.

Omega-3's are why you take fish oil.

"Dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish oil and certain plant/nut oils. Fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while some nuts (English walnuts) and vegetable oils (canola, soybean, flaxseed/linseed, olive) contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)."

that's like saying to drink a 3 rack for the taste. not cause it gets you wrecked and makes you forget about your shitty life.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Nov 30,2009 12:34pm
ALA has to be converted to DHA and EPA for use. IIRC some is used immediately but the majority has to be converted.

Omega 3 isn't just one thing. It's Omega 3 fatty acids. With an S. While I'm sure there are some plants that have DHA and EPA, the majority of ALA which gives you the least benefits.

That being said, I take Omega 3 supps every day derived from fish.

From poorly executed studies paid for by Big Agra/the Gov't. If you read the first saturated fat link you'd see information on Ancel Keys' study that completely disproves it.

And if you really need some more scientific information regarding saturated fat (I always show people Mark's Daily Apple first because it's the most down to earth) then I can link you to some more places.

And there's always the glaring example, and I'm not being a bitch here, that you appear to be overweight, which seems to be a common trait among people who insist I am not as healthy as they are.

Moreover, the entire point of your argument here is that I cannot get this fat eating what I do, and I can. Unless you think the doctors are making that up, too.

I'm pretty sure I've already said that I'm not 100% sure that mine is the only way... just that it's the way that works for me. If anything was misconstrued as the opposite, I apologize but you're just as quickly calling me wrong, don't forget.

WHAAOOOOOOOOOO

dudes. exercise and eat fruits and veggies with other sensible foods. eat less to burn body fat. designer diets are lame.

exercise, exercise, exercise!!! humans have the best endurance in the entire animal kingdom because our early ancestors busted their ass for a meal with teamwork and endurance as their only weapons. take advantage of what your body can do!!! exercise and all will follow, you will want to eat better foods.

the advent of early humanoids cooking (meat especially) had a lot to do with our evolution. vegetarianism is a great alternative and works for many, but it doesn't mean eating healthy, and i eat meat for so many reasons that i could never swear it off. the fact that going veg is frowned upon by doctors for babies and young children says a lot. sure there are so many nutritional substitutes for meat but... well anyway...

EXERCISE!!

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Nov 30,2009 2:49pm
Exercise isn't AS important as you're making it out to be but it's still good to engage in medium level aerobic activity and a whole lot of lifting heavy things.

Oh man Martins. I'm almost shedding a tear here. Exercise is THE answer to everything. For one thing, if exercise isn't the key component to a diet, it's not a diet.

IMHO, it's the key component to a good life. No matter what eating regimen you do, if a large amount of exercise isn't involved, strenuous or casual, your body doesn't put that food to work. Eating the best foods in the world does not make you healthy if you breathe heavy by the time you make it to the top of the stairs.

The psychological benefits of exercise completely outweigh the psychological benefits of eating nuts & berries & butter all day. With the benefits of exercise, you won't want to eat shitty food. Granted I love bacon, cheese, and extremely heavy beer... but living an active lifestyle and being sensible about what I eat, making sure I fit in a lot of natural foods, I'd say I'm in good shape and I have been my whole life. I think that genetics and especially the eating habits one is raised with have a something to do with it. That's why different regimens work for different people.

But exercise should be the absolute first step to anybody's health. Faster metabolism, more fulfilling sleep, better waste processing, more direct bodily use of nutrients...on and on...the body is meant to be used and used well.

Well bacon is great for you and cheese, if it weren't for the lactose and casein, is also great for you!
I clearly don't disagree that exercise is something that needs to happen...because it does. I just think it isn't the end all be all. It is what rounds off a diet. Body composition is controlled mostly by diet and improved through exercise. It is by no means the first step, though. If you're eating a high carb diet and working out, you deplete the glycogen stores in your muscles and liver - your body then says holy fuck I need more fast burning carbs, not the more efficient slow burning fat, I need it now! Then you get cravings for carby food and your fat gets stored in the fat cells instead of being used. Nevermind the insulin shock that causes it all. If you eat a high fat low carb diet, THAT'S when exercise is the most beneficial.

Vegetarians = Dumb people who follow fads/trends. America is the only country full of veggie idiots because our media is the most powerful in the world. "Ya, I'm so manly, but please hold the meat." Gimme a break...this is why every other country laughs at us. Imagine what would have happened to the human race without meat. EXTINCT. ten pounds of horomone added beef plus 50 caged chickens with no beaks, fry all of this in the skull of a mastodon using bald eagle fat as a greaser for the pan.

but seriously, I have noticed as I have had to buy my own food, meat has disappeared from my diet...mostly. maybe three times a week now at most, whereas when I lived at home it was every night and maybe for lunch too.
