Of all genres of music, metal is unique because the line between "acceptable" and "total failure" is very narrow. Making metal is easy, but making good metal... difficult. Periodically, metal bands either sell out or have personal problems, and they create metal failures. Here's a list of ten of the worst metal FAILs of all time.

The most epic METAL FAILs of all time

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that Massacre The Promise and Judas Priest Ram it Down should be on the list.

Can't agree with "Domination," but MAN was "Back From the Dead" a steaming pile. No coincidence they shared a producer with Madball on that one. (Never mind the hilarious Win95-era 3d graphics on the super-necessary and relevant enhanced CD.)

Wolverine Blues is a good album.

how is Emperor's IX equilibrium on this list and not In Flames Clayman?

Divine Intervention had sub par song writing, and a lot of forgettable riffs. But goddamnit if it didn't have some of the heaviest guitar tone ever.

Domination had way way way over simplified riffs for Morbid Angel, and Dave Vincent's goofy nazi lyrics. But if you hang in there long enough there's some sweet guitar work.

XI Equilibrium SUCKED. Emperor was one of my favorite bands when that record came out, and it wrecked my life. It was like they took anthems, cut out everything black metal about it and patched it up with samples from Annie Lennox songs. Quintessential metal fail.

plus St. Anger and Diabolus In Musica are both far worse than the Black Album and Divine Intervention....and I didn't think Souls To Deny was bad at all

toggletoggle post by dontlivefastjustdie at Aug 26,2009 4:04pm
yeah but the black album was the first of many fails... st. anger just probably being the worst of them

toggletoggle post by moenli at Aug 26,2009 4:08pm
i certainly wouldnt call Souls deathcore...

toggletoggle post by MikeOfDecrepitude at Aug 26,2009 4:10pm
It can't be disputed that Emperor lost certain aesthetic attributes when they decided to start performing "Sophisticated Black Metal Art" (exclusively, no mind you). While their earlier exploits captured the "true" Emperor sound, their later albums were still competently written. However, a huge Metal fail should go to the track "Sworn", which I always skip over, due to that cheesy stop and go riff in it.

Ah, Clayman... how I hate you so. In Flames "black album" and their nosedive into nu-metalocrity. Are they truly the same band who produced quality melodic metal with Scandinavian folk influences; coupled with interesting lyrical themes? I'd like to think not, but I'd only be lying to myself.

I TOTALY LIKED SUGAR RAYS METAL ALBUMM. HE ROCJKED SO HARD

toggletoggle post by DYA NLI W/ GUILTY PLEASURES at Aug 26,2009 4:16pm
FWIW, at least Slayer was taking chances on Diabolus. Not that they all paid off, but they were at least trying. Divine was just tepid and uninspired. (The title track, in particular, should've just been called "Seasons pt 2".) It did have its moments, though.

I think this list can go into the 100s. Here's some notable ones:

bathory - octagon
hypocrisy - catch22
dimmu borgir - everything after Spiritual black dimensions (perhaps that album as well)
burzum -dauđi baldrs
cryptopsy - The unspoken king
Sepultura - chaos ad / roots
soilwork - predators portrait
satyricon - volcano and beyond

Sepultura Roots album was great concept-like album......but for only one album....the tribal theme should not have continued into becoming the atrocious band known as Soulfly

Why is Domination on there? There are many Metal "fails" It takes a big fucking list to fit them all.

I strongly disagree with those...especially Chaos A.D., which is my personal favorite Sepultura record

everything after Roots for Sepultura and after Natural Born Chaos for Soilwork was shit, but those 3 albums you listed are very good IMO

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Aug 27,2009 7:35am
i like IX Equilibrium, not all of it, but i don't think its horrible. Back From the Dead was atrocious, the only tolerable song was "Feed On the Weak". i'd like to add:

Deicide - Torment in Hell
Six Feet Under - Warpath and everything after
Old Man's Child - Slaves of the World
Gorgoroth - bringing Gaahl as the frontman

i strongly disagree with Spiritual Black Dimensions, that album is awesome. i like Puritanical but i can see why everyone hates it. Daudi Baldrs is worth listening to for comedic value alone.

toggletoggle post by ark nli at Aug 27,2009 10:09am
from the comments in the article:

"“Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk” I think was a bigger disappointment after hearing ItNE. Early Emperor is the combination of musicianship and artistry we don’t see in any musical genre very often — and so they fuck it up straight afterwards. Unbelievable."

are you fucking kidding me?

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Aug 27,2009 10:28am
seriously, Anthems is one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded.

The author does not consider In Flames to have ever been good. There's probably a separate list for FAIL BANDS.

Anthems is my least favorite album.

toggletoggle post by aril at Aug 28,2009 8:19am
Anthems has been getting shit since it first came out. Some people love it and sone people hate it. The production (wall of sound) is the main reason why people shit on it, but also because of the change in direction emperor went to.
I like all emperor releases but can understand why they continually got shit.

When we let rip with our "Metal FAILs -- Volume I," people were pissed -- mainly because we didn't include their favorite fails. So in the grand tradition of whoring ourselves for populist acclaim, and thus perhaps thousands of grubby fingers clicking on the same links, we've brought you the sequel: "More Metal FAILs" or "Son of Metal FAIL," depending on what you want to call it.

Son of Metal FAIL

In Flames is simplistic enough, just not good enough. See above.

I think whoever wrote the list was aiming for where the fail may have started over where the fail was the most concentrated?

And am I the only person that thought Satyricon's Volcano was pretty awesome?

While Anus.com has always been opinionated, this metal/band fail list and it's "for whiners" statement, seems an awful lot like something I'd read on Teufelstomb.com, albeit without the toilet humor. I don't agree with everything on the list, but some of it I do. I definitely think it's sad, wait, let me reiterate, PATHETIC, if people get upset over someone elses opinions, over bands they happen to like. If you're not in the band, why care? If people genuinely like certain music, then a persons negative opinions shouldn't make them feel awkward or question why they happen to like it. Humans = LOL.

To tie into the "Faking it" thread, does anyone know people who stopped liking certain bands or music, when their friends or others with stronger personality types tell them that they don't approve? It's one of those,"Oh well, he APPEARS to know what he's talking about, so there must be something bad about this music I enjoy. I'm going to stop listening to it now". By my standards, those are ultimate fakers.
