New site? Maybe some day.
|
I have alot of videos and music on my computer, and I'm hurting for space.
So I was thinking of buying a 250GB usb hard drive (more then likely an Iomega)
Would I be able to keep itunes on my computer but use the portable harddrive as my library?
or even install itunes on the portable drive and keep the library there?
or would I be better off just getting a second internal hard drive?
|

|
yes you can do that |
|
Fubar is my main media player, buy I still use Itunes for my Ipod.
I already know Fubar will recognize a library from an off-board HDD though. |
|
you can keep your itunes LIBRARIES on the portable,
but not an itunes install that goes between computers.
Oh, and don't get a 250, I have 3-4 of them and they are great but 250GB is an awkward space especially if you start doing above 128kbps. by far my favorites are the western digital passports. get a 500GB one of those for under $100. Problem is that they only come with a 1 year warranty, but they are solid as hell. I wish I could trade 3 250GB for one 500GB. I would do it in a heard beat. |
|
I bought a 500gig iomega that corrupted in 2 days and lost all our music. I've had a 250gig "passport" one for months and it's awesome. |

Yes, that is what I have. Thing is awesome. I keep my itunes library right on there. |
|
I have a 160 GB external that I have no use for Niccolai. $25 and its yours. |
|
nicco: get a 500GB and do what I do, back up, back up, back up.
you will use the space.
and DON'T GET SIMPLETECH!!!!
"A simpletech would have a mystery drive in it... it might be western digital, maxtor, seagate, hitachi" |
|
I've had the same 200GB WD external for about 3 years. No problems, pretty reliable. |
|
either get a western digital passport (1-year warranty, but built solid) or get a wd blue bear drive (3-year warranty)
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=210905921
and then put it in a case. I would highly not recommend this and just look for a WD 500GB passport (best buy sometimes has them on sale for $100 if you have some gift certs kicking around). The reason is cause with an external case, it won't be as solid AND you will be tempted to pull it apart when you need to tx from other 2.5" hd. that's my problem atleast. |
|
thing is I really don't need the drive to be external, So if I were going to do what you're recomending rev, I could always just buy the internal and throw it in the case rather then buy an external enclosure too. (my case has room for 4 3.5s)
I just have literally NO idea what to look for when shopping for a hard drive. |
|
Just steal one. Better than participating in the monetary system |
|
thats a good deal, but I think aaron sold me on the 500 gig idea, and I'd want to buy new to take advantage of a warranty, I have VERY bad luck with hard drives. |
|
that was aimed at this:
SUBJECT: help with portable hard drives.
thing is I really don't need the drive to be external |
fail. |
|
So hold up a second...
I can keep my iTunes library on an external drive? Will iTunes let me assign the librbary to an external drive, because the few times I've looked into doing it it seems like iTunes really wants it to be on your local drive. |
|
haha
I figured an external would be handy for moving shit from computer to computer, but it seems like I can get double the space for half the money if I just go internal.
So I'm assuming I should go WD for an internal, but they make about 60 billion drives.
I don't understand the lineup at all. |

thats what i was wondering. According to MSD you should be able to. |
|
see, that's the thing about itunes. the user shouldn't have to worry about such things.
I do enjoy my ipod on occasion, but I've always hated itunes. can't stand that shit. |
|
I have my iTunes library on my external. All you need to do is go to the advanced option in preferences and assign a folder in your external hd for all your music to go to. Just make sure its connected when you open iTunes since iTunes can sometimes reset storage options. |
|
nicco: wd has like 5 lines.
blue, black, scorpio, mybook and passport.
that's 1.. 2... 3.. 60 million? |
|
sorry, 30 million.
reguardless I can't tell the difference in quality.
which should I get?
|
|
It seems you have no idea what you want to do.
why don't you figure out what you want to do first. otherwise, you are just wasting time and money on shit you probably don't need. |
|
really its
blue: slow laptops
black: fast laptops, fast desktops
green: low power desktops
scorpio: super high speed
and then:
passports = 2.5" external drives
mybooks = 3.5" external drives. |

I'm gonna assign the shit out of it. This is perfect. I've got a 250 GB firewire drive that I bought for doing video work for school just sitting around. |

I want/need to free space on my C and D drive which are practically full.
the best way to do this is get the 120 gigs of audio and 200 gigs of video onto a new drive.
I was thinking external for the convenience of being able to move shit to other computers, but it's looking like internal is significantly cheaper.
bing. |
|
no shit. just get a 1TB WD green drive for $80 and turn your C or D drive into an external or storage.
I just saw this deal:
Western Digital 1TB Green 32MB Cache $69.29
Dell Small Business has a Western Digital 1TB for $69.29 + Free Shipping (Tax May Vary)
Apply coupon code XTHR0RQRXJHQ12
but I think it's dead. I would personally pull out the C and D drives and replace them with one or two 1TB drives.
I just replaced my laptop 320GB with a 500GB without reinstalling windows by
1) downloading and burning this iso
http://clonezilla.org/download/sourceforge/stable/iso-zip-files.php
2) hooking up my drives and rebooting from the CD I just burnt
3) cloning local drive to local drive including MBR
4) swapping the drives and booting off the new drive.
worked brilliantly. The only thing is that I'm using windows xp and not vista so now I have to figure out how to grow the main partition. |
