did you login to your router through browser?

http://192.168.1.1
username: admin
password: admin

then check your DHCP clients table to see if your computer name is showing up on the network.

did you use a pin to reset the router to its default settings?

uhhh, if the other machine works yours should too... or you should at least be getting the 'connected' light when you plug the cable into the back of the router.

umm. If I translated your initial semi-confusing post right, then try swapping the cables so that the long one that's running upstairs is used to connect to the computer you know works. So you can make sure it's not a cable issue.

Also, manuals for all linksys products can be downloaded on their website.

Lastly, what model router is it? I didn't know linksys made one with a 5-port switch

it was the cord. i brought the other one back to staples and without a package and got a new one.

cool.

It's strange that they actually sell defective cords. They're so cheap to make and they sell them for a fortune.
