My Landlord lives next door and asked me to teach his 15 year old son to play. Kid is in the primative stages of metal obsession so I feel obliged to point him in the right direction. I have a general idea of what to show him but I'm not sure what would make for a good structed lesson plan after a couple weeks. My idea is to teach fundamentals (chords, rhythm, and such) and then at the end of the lesson through in a some kind of metal-related technique or something.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance doodz

And yes I already pleaded with Rich Bova for assistance but he told me that kids should not learn guitar because they will only be dissapointed that they will never be able to shred like him.

teach him that not everything good is about music theory. music needs to come from within first. FIRST LESSON DONE

Make sure you start with alternate picking for technique stuff. Get his fingers working and used to the fretboard and then move onto chords, chord structure. Do rhythm after all that because it will put rhythm in context.

Give him scale patterns. Show him inversions of pentatonics and teach him about soloing in the same key all over the fretboard.

Teach him that the only way he'll ever make it is to play guitar EXACTLY like whitechappelsuicidesilenceimpendingdoom. No exceptions

very good early lessons, minus one thing.
if he wants to play metal, add "teeth" under picking types.

Make sure you force him to use the right fingers. Use that pinky no matter how hard it seems at first!

toggletoggle post by rotivore at Jun 20,2009 2:20pm
force him to learn Dissection's "Storm of the Light Bane" front to back during the early lessons
