Interview done by Nashville Matt

1. First off will you give a brief history of Cold Northern Vengeance? As well as why you choose that name and what meaning does it have for the members of the band?

2002, it was cold, it was dark and if you listen to Mayhem we all know what can happen from there. The name is a reflection of our area. We are from the cold miserable north and this musick is what I consider sonic revenge and necromancy. We are bringing back into light all the things that were swept under the rug by judeo christianity. This is my revolt against the modern world. Think Judas Priest "Screaming for Vengeance" crossed with black metal....YESSS! The light of Lucifer shines in cold and dark New England.

2. There is a track on the new album called “Hidden 93” what is this song about?

The song is about finding what Crowley would refer to as your "True Will"... CNV is my true will that reveals the great work. The song is a Thelemic religious rite.

3. Cold Northern Vengeance has been around since 2002. Yet “Domination and Servitude” is the bands first full length. What has been released prior to this album?

Well we had a CD called "The Arising Dungeo n Cult" which started off as a demo tape. Ixiol put it out on CD and it's like 45 minutes long so I would consider that our first full length. Thus far we have released

2002-2003 4 song demo

The Arising Dungeon Cult CD/Demo- 2004

CNV/Martyrvore split tape

2005 "Curse" cassette released by the Italian Bylectum prod and soon to be re released on CD by the Austrian label Ashen Prod

2006 Black Death Over New England split cassette- 3 New England bm bands

2008 "Domination and Servitude" (Bindrune Recordings and hats off to Marty from Bindrune. The most stand up guy and honourable person in the metal underground)

4. The music on the full length is quite complex. Who writes the music and how long does it usually take you to write/record a song?

I (Heathen) wrote most of the album. Gemini wrote one song "The Black Silence".... He also throws in some extra flares here and there with leads/keys/bass. The length it takes to write/record a song seems to be taking longer with time for a couple of reasons.

I. We are making a conscious effort at better song writing and quality.
II. We have to work all the time to pay rent so this leaves little time for recording which sucks. I want CNV to be my full time job but for right now it ain't in the cards.

5. There are a lot of samples on “Domination and Servitude” how do they tie in with the overall feel of the album?

The samp les are used in a way where it forces you to think. Open up the subconscious... That's what this band is all about.

6. There is a song on the cd called “The by Paths to Chaos”. This song being the most different than the rest of the songs on the album, what inspired you to create it?

Well it's a reflection of my subconscious. This Nietzsche quote best sums it up:

"The German soul has passages and galleries in it, there are caves, hiding-places, and dungeons therein ; its disorder has much of the charm of the mysterious ; the German is well aquanited with the by-paths to chaos."

Now bear in mind we ain't from Germany. We are Germanic and this does not mean I am some nazi. The quote is something I totally relate to and that's exactly what this musick is! If the conscious represents causal then the subconscious embodies the acausal. Causal is the mediocre and dull Jehovah and Acausal is the mysterious, dark, exciting SATAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I think you get where I am coming from? Hail the Acausal Satan and the Subconscious Lucifer!!!

7. Is there a certain message that Cold Northern Vengeance would like to convey with their art?

I am opening the flood gates to the myserious depths of my own subconscious and will and thrusting it upon this world. It's idiosyncratic ancient art. So that's my message... I am in defiance of the subjugation of art. Fuck ye...

8. There is an influence in the lyrics of Aleis ter Crowley on the song “Heathen, Heretic, Scapegoat” is this song about him? Has his works had an impact on the members of the band? Are there any other works of philosophy you are influenced by?

Yeah, it's obviously about him and Nietzsche. Their philosophies are very similiar and it's no secret that Crowley was a big fan of Nietzsche. It's a rebellious, rousing tune like a drinking song by the sea shore. He's a big influence on me and black metal. Only a fucking imbecile would deny that. "The key of joy is disobedience" -Crowley

9. Are any of the members involved with any other projects? If so how do they differ from Cold Northern Vengeance?

Martyrvore .... Gemini is more involved with it that I am but I do some vocals for it. It's filthy old school black death metal. Songs about nuclear war and natural disasters.

Human Slaughter- This is Gemini's solo project. The earlier stuff is your standard Bathory esque bm but his new direction is pretty different. There is a lot of classic heavy metal influence in it now with some other oddball flares tossed in. I am looking forward to the new stuff being recorded. It should be amazing! Gemini is a great all around creator of musick...

10. Since the bands conception how often have you performed live? Are there any shows that stand out for whatever reason?

We did'nt play live until 2005. Gigs that stand out were with bands like Grand Belial's Key, Watain, Angel Corpse, Absurd, 1349, Nachtmystium... The first time we played with Watain was insane. They have such a raw primeval evil energy about them. Especially that particular gig... The Absurd/GBK show was like a skinhead riot... Hahahaha! It definately lived up to its banner as a "Hooligan Black Metal Attack" that night.

11. In your opinion how has the underground changed or do you think it still exists? I can remember 10 or 12 years ago where letters were handwritten and came with flyers. There was a lot of tape trading, demos, etc. Now it seems it has been replaced with file sharing, where you can go to a link and download everything the band has released. Handwritten letters have been replaced with e-mail; do you think the underground has lost that personal feeling and atmosphere? Or do you think it still exist, but in a different form?

Well, I don't download music. If I find something I like I buy it and support it. There are far to many shit bags that download everything and never really support. I guess you could say that the internet is a blessing and a curse. It is ruining music in a lot of ways but it's also good for getting the name out....

I write a letter here and there. When I was younger I was really into it. Gemini writes letters and tape trades constantly. I totally respect that underground spiritl.

12. What material do you have available? Do you have any contact information for people who are interested in obtaining copies from you?

email dungeoncult@aol.com or write to

13. What is your opinion of the event known as Gathering of Shadows? You have performed there before correct? What was your experience like? Do you think more events should be set up in the same manner?

We were supposed to play but it's always a matter of money that keeps us from these gigs. We jus aint got the money to make the trek out. We'd love to do something like that and think the whole concept is great. We'd like to play all over/Europe/where ever... I am sure it will happen and some point but as it stands right now we are still a band climbing the mountain.

14. Do you have any future releases planned? Any live shows planned?

Yes.... We are working on new material which WILL out do "Domination and Servitude"... I have a bunch of new tricks up the ol' sleeve that are coming out of left field so to speak... You have a big surprise coming is all I can say.

15. This is the end of the interview; do you have any last words?

Watch for the next Acausal Satanic Heathen Mind Fuck... It's comin round the bend
