I have an 18x24" illustration (paid for by a client) that needs a high resolution color scan, and I'm supposed to pay $80 for the scan plus $20 to put it on disc? What the fuck is that shit?

Now I'm going to have to cut the artwork into 4 squares, scan them into my computer and piece them together seamlessly in Photoshop. Talk about a pain in my dickhole. I neither have the time nor the patience for such shenanigans. Printshops can suck a dick.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Feb 17,2009 4:26pm
We charge that because we're better than you.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 17,2009 4:27pm
can you do that at the library?

toggletoggle post by IllinoisEnemaBradness at Feb 17,2009 4:45pm
WOW! that's such a huge mark up. It doesn't cost anything to run a scanner(besides electricity). Even if it's a moving scanner and not a ccd. And to burn one file for 20$?
INCONCEIVABLE

I'm in the wrong business

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 17,2009 4:45pm
Find me a library in Wilmington, DE, that can do a large hi res color scan and I'll go there.

Seriously. The guy tried to tell me why it costs that much but I've worked in a print shop and know all you do is PRESS A FUCKING BUTTON on a piece of equipment that just happens to cost more. Doesn't mean it costs more to run; fuckin' christ.

toggletoggle post by sacreligion at Feb 17,2009 4:48pm
they have scanners that can fit in delaware now?

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 17,2009 4:48pm
The scanner hangs over a little into PA.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 17,2009 4:58pm
HAH, Kinkos can scan it for $18. Fuck professional print shops. I am the victor!

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 17,2009 5:21pm
in deleware scanners have you.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 17,2009 6:03pm
Even better, Kinkos did it for $3 and it's probably the same exact quality as that expensive nazi printshop. AND THE DAY IS MINE.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Feb 17,2009 8:45pm
when your back in town, you should have me do all that for you. Highest quality scans free. That's one of the main services i sell, i scan trial exhibits/photos for court. I can have as much of it as you want done for you.... as soon as your back.

.......who was the client? Hopefully Boarcorpses' art can be done soon..... how's life down there? We certainly miss ya up here.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 17,2009 9:23pm
I'll have you scan the Boarcorpse art, haha. This was for a band called End It All in Taunton or that area at least.

Life in DE is pretty boring, but I'm keeping quite busy with my studies. I'm currently learning a 400 pg. rule book. YAY.

toggletoggle post by Pires at Feb 17,2009 9:26pm
rulez are fer homosexuals. I thought you were cool MFR.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Feb 17,2009 10:04pm
I'll scan the BC art. I'm the guy who does it here anyway.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 17,2009 10:11pm
Works for me Damon.

Pires, I am the coolest cucumber you ever seen. These rules give me the power to move and stop trains whenever I want, so I'm like God cool.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Feb 18,2009 8:56am
^^i call shenanigans.^^

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 18,2009 9:01am
Nay sir. My job is to be the eyes and ears of AmTrak. I need to make sure everything is copasthetic before I can allow a train to move, and I can tell a train to stop if I feel necessary. Mothafucka.

This print / copy shop that is friends with the coffee shop that I work at wanted me to pay $2 for each file I print then copy. I couldn't believe it. I was like "Why? You're just printing it straight from a pdf file. It's pretty much the same as having the original." And they insisted it wasn't.

Then I went to a major chain and they printed it for free from the Flash Drive, and I knew the kid so I didn't have to pay for anything after that.

Lesson learned: If you want your fucking little business to stay open, stop being a childish greedy fuck about things you could easily do for free at no cost to you.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 18,2009 11:30am
Yeah, you're looking at like 1 tenth of a cent year on the scanner rail and exposure bulb. RAEP RAEP RAEP Just out of curiosity, what would they have charged for a copy that size?

Equipment, maintenance, and need of a business model.

The money to buy that equipment doesn't come from nowhere ;)

And, they always need to plan for the next piece of equipment -- probably in another two years.

But to answer the unstated question:

Yes, cooperation is better than bottom-up economic systems.

Before you call me a commie, I don't think pure socialism is the answer.

I am, however, a socialist -- just one that believes in social darwinism, traditional values and a cosmic purpose to human life.

Thus death to liberals, but also: death to wasteful capitalism.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 18,2009 12:57pm
I know it costs money but you know what? That print shop has the same equipment that Kinkos does and Kinkos charged 97% less.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 18,2009 1:00pm
Were you wearing your deviled egg costume when you went in? Maybe they're prejudiced against devils. Or eggs.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Feb 18,2009 1:35pm
are you sure they have the same equipment?

We charge similar prices to what you mentioned originally. But I also scan shit that ends up on billboards, walls in tradeshows, etc. In my case it's not just the scanning but the touchup work that goes in after. That's what the money is for. We don't expect people to come in here for scanned documents, they come in (most of the time) for commercial artwork.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 18,2009 2:27pm
Yeah, it was the same. I can't remember the models but I asked the expensive print shop and then checked Kinkos. Same shit.

Steve, I called them on the phone so they couldn't tell I was wearing my devilled egg costume. But I did ask if he'd land on my cock. Maybe that's why it was so expensive.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 18,2009 4:12pm
Cock-landing does add to your overhead, some. PREMIUM SERVICE

most places don't upgrade for at least 5 years. And a wide format scanner? Probably 7 or 8.

I had a friend form Denmark once, his name was Utgrad

Same reason Wal-Mart is cheaper... volume.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Feb 18,2009 6:23pm
Well until I have $100 bills to throw around for miniscule operations, I'll be spending $3 at Kinkos.
