Since the last show went over so well I'm gonna try to book another for March/April. Any ideas for improvement would be great. Keep in mind the more realistic the suggestion the better.

tam's the kinda guy you'd probably want to see in person. he can be really fuckin gay about shit sometimes though and i wouldn't be surprised if he said he doesn't need anyone else booking metal shows if tom's already got one in the works. worth a shot though.

in all seriousness though, you should convince that fucker to sell canned pbr at a reasonable price. he could've sold em for a buck each and made a profit.

Actually i thought that the lineup worked great. People shared gear, people got on and off quick, and i don't think the turnout would've been as good with all the bands. It seemed to me that every band that played had people come just to see them, and most of them stuck around for the rest. So while i usually agree that 8 is too many, in this situation it worked well. Especially with all the room that the bands had for their equipment, without that space it would've been much harder.

As far as improvements, i don't have anything realistic to offer. I thought the night went over really well, and while there is always room for improvement, there was nothing that jumped out at me as needing to change.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Feb 2,2009 1:11pm
yeah, the whole 3bucks a can for PBR was nuts. Maybe offer to pick up 10 cases of PBR/Naraggansett for him, and see if he'll sell em for 2.

a smaller touring band would be good for the next show. i don't know who you should get or even who's coming around in that time frame. maybe you could snag one of the better nemhf bands depending on when you book it.

I was worn out from a 10 hour work day (which in retrospect I should've asked for off) and I had to be at a family party thing (which was lame) and there was another thing I had to be at (which I skipped). By the time I was done with the family party thing I was just tired enough that driving there and back would've been a bad move (I have a tendency to fall asleep at the wheel).

I almost cheated on you with Revocation, but parking around there was impossible.

toggletoggle post by BSV at Feb 2,2009 1:21pm
no I would NEVER book 8 bands, at a venue like that. I'm never cool with 8 bands, it think it's hack and gives half assed bands an excuse to whore themselves out while not worrying about doing any promotion.
that sucks the big cheese there won't let anyone else book the club. fuck that place, sucks cause it coulda been cool.

Not that I'm disagreeing, but it just seemed to me like everything went great with 8 bands. I know that the headlining bands usaully don't like that many because people will get sick of the show and leave before them, but It seemed like there were just as many people for DYSENTERY as there was for anyone else. So why no more than 6? Like i said, not disagreeing, i just wanna know where your coming from.

1.) 6-8 Bands. Seemed to work well this round. Try to book the same or most of the same ones. Maybe add a couple more to draw in more people.

2.) Try your best to chose a day that wont conflict with any other big shows going on.

3.) Announce early and often to build the suspense.

have fun rawk hard

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Feb 2,2009 1:33pm
the only real downside i could see from so many bands was that the money got split a lot of ways... but if you had this many again you could always do the "Who are you here to see" thing. And if bands don't bring people:
1.they get paid less
2.they won't get to play again

that way "half-ass" bands can't "whore" themselves out and nor promote.

toggletoggle post by BSV at Feb 2,2009 1:33pm
i dunno, if this venue was serious about making shit happen they'd take the time to talk. clear sign that he is unmotivated to do things right and that booking there is probably way to much work than what it's worth. there really shouldn't be more than 2 shows a year there. it's basically a vfw with expensive beer and a big stage. i doubt i'll go there if there is more than 6 bands playing. they charging you for the room too?

that's why the door guy does it. check marks are literally the most fair way to determine draw and pay, if you want to do it that way. if a band from out of town brings 25 people and a worcester band brought like 5, why should they get paid the same for working harder?

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Feb 2,2009 1:39pm
well, you just ask when they pay and make a checkmark next to a bands name on a sheet. Real easy. But like i said, i don't care about the money, just trying to suggest a solution to BSV's stated issue.

I think the solution is for everyone to promote. Not just the bands but everyone. If you plan on going to the show you should also do your part in promoting it. I brought my friend along this time around and maybe next I'll have three.

1.they get paid less
2.they won't get to play again

that way "half-ass" bands can't "whore" themselves out and nor promote.

I've heard people try this in Albany, it usually ends up with the promoter back pedaling so that any bands will do shows with him again, truth is almost no one (at least here) will go to a show without there being at least 2 or 3 bands they want to see, like me for instance, as far as I'm concerned there wasn't a band that played that I didn't want to see, and I'm sure that many other people there were in the same boat

but as has already been said, money shouldn't be an issue, I think the major argument is length of the show and people getting bored, but with all of the ludicrousness of the last one I don't think that was an issue to most people, but I could definitely see where at certain shows it could be

I think the show was awesome, I think the venue was awesome (how many venues would put up with the utter decimation of computer accessories?), more shows should happen there, as many bands as are necessary should play, more shenanigans are always appreciated

I say naked pudding wrestling and an eazy cheeze eat off, DO IT YOU WONT

there were probably as many paying people there as a sold out o'briens and with 8 bands that's a really poor. that's why 8 band shows suck, half the time bands don't bother telling anyone to go cause they're wicked long drawn out shows that start way too early.

yeah call me an asshole, but I would book a show and not go on the internet asking people what to do better, you know why? because I already know what needs to be improved upon. just becaues i don't want to play or go to a show with 8 bands DOESN'T mean I'm trying to sabotage the club or whoever the kid is that booked the last show. I go to plenty of shows sir.

toggletoggle post by Dankill at Feb 2,2009 2:44pm
I'd say 4-5 band max. I know some people wanna do the whole idea of getting your bang for your buck, but seriously, too many shows with too many bands can be a drag.
If you line up a solid show from the opener to the closer with 4-5 bands, it rules. People don't have to pick and choose so much of what bands to watcvh and not watch, it leaves less chance of some bands that aren't that good filling up space, and by the end of the show half the crowd isn't totally dragging ass and tired by the time the headliner hits the stage. Every show doesn't need to be a minifest.

Otherwise, I'd have to go with Blue. Lights for the merch tables would have been nice and you can never have too many mics.
The beer prices were def high, but what can you do?
$3 for a PBR can? I paid the extra dollar for better beer.

I don't even know what show you all are talking about...it was probably a wigger slam football fest but here's my opinion...

Unless it's a 'festival' which are starting to get old....4 bands MAX. 30 mins or less from each band otherwise people start leaving and no one wants to headline to an empty room.

Multiple mics are key. Most bands have at least one other guy doing some backup vocals yet most shows at smaller 'venues' have one mic and one mic stand.

and PBR tall boys for $2 are key ...otherwise...BOYCOT.

double post.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Feb 3,2009 12:47am edited Feb 3,2009 1:11am
alright alright.

1.) bring enough microphones.

i have no clue if you had prior knowledge about what was available for the show mic-wise, but make sure next time you have at least 2 vocal mics with stands, and a kick mic wouldn't hurt. if you want i can bring my mics (guitar/vocal/drum) for the next next show and do the sound (for some reason everyone thinks eliot did the sound). take in mind the PA there is super underpowered so i don't even think it'd be able to do much more than vocals, guitar and kick.

2.) maximum 6 bands per show.

why do i say this you ask? because of a few reasons. no one wants to get to a show before 8 o clock. why have bands play that early? its downright mean and hurts my feelings. the only reason this show ended in time is because composted had no setup time and their 'set' was 20 minutes. had they actually set up and played a full set, dysentery wouldnt have had time for a full set. this show ended 2 hours behind schedule according to the original plan. it'd be way easier to have 2 less bands, not shaft the openers with smaller crowds and not worry so much about going way behind schedule.

3.) backline equipment the right way.

yes, bands did share cabs but this wasnt done efficiently at all. there was too much confusion getting stuff on and off the stage. first two/three bands should set up their guitar and bass cabs behind one another so that all that needs to be done is take cabs off and switch kits. and bands that are sharing entire set ups should play back to back (ie horrifying/boarcorpse shouldve played one after the other). this helps immensely.

this is my two (possibly three) cents.

To actually add something constructive to this thread for once, and I don't think anyone brought this up yet, but you might want to make it a little more structured as far set times go. Hashing out at least a rough schedule (I know you had an order, but having a rough estimate of times, especially for an 8 band show, helps alot) can help avoid alot of confusion about who's playing where, how long they have, etc. Saturday ended up going pretty smoothly, don't get me wrong, but to avoid any confusion in the future, that might be something to consider.

I totally agree... Rusty, i met you near the beginning of the night.. right?

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Feb 3,2009 9:07am
Yea, we had brief discussions throughout the night.

We'll definitely brodown more in the future though, I thought you guys were very good.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Feb 3,2009 9:43am
The sound situation proved the most difficult to deal with. I had thought the soundguy I brought had all the equipment necessary but that ended up not being the case (also Tam's set up was in worse shape than i thought)... also he split after 2 bands and left me to run the sound and the show. As for the reason there was 8 bands - it was originally gonna be 6 but MFR sold me on HC and Boarcorpse since everyone was in eachothers bands, could share equipt and play shorter sets to fit everything in. I had no intention of doing another 8 band show but thought it would be nice if the first one was more like a festival type set up.

Thanks for all the constructive criticism. It's highly appreciated and I respect alot of your opinions.

toggletoggle post by ohai at Feb 3,2009 9:49am
For me the bands sounded fine from where I was, which was everywhere. You did a fine job FIMS.

toggletoggle post by DogbiteDaveHumphreys at Feb 3,2009 11:00am

I thought this was an awesome show, but if I were to change anything, it would be that bands obey the Metal Law that states that if a band plays a Slayer song as its last song, that song shalt be Raining Blood, right?

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Feb 3,2009 11:13am
i prefer to break the law sir.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Feb 3,2009 11:21am
i hope i never have to see another metal band cover raining blood again.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Feb 3,2009 12:06pm
THIS SHOW SUCKED CAN MY BAND PLAY THE NEXT ONE OR YOU ARE A PUSSY

toggletoggle post by Kevord  at Feb 3,2009 12:10pm
Raining Blood is what they call in the buisness a cheap pop.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 3,2009 1:05pm
Here's my 18.5 cents:

cheap beer
drum/kick mic (snare mic?)
mic stands - 2-3 boom, 1 straight
less bands
not the same bands
keep the shows either a) tastefully varied or b) strongly themed (i.e., either a good mix like the other night or an all-out [slam/DM/BM/polka/whatever] night, but don't have 3 pizza party thrash bands and 1 wigger slam band or whatever.)
hardcore bands can go to roman's
the aforementioned merch lights
emergency vag sand remover on-site (it's like an eyewash station but upside down)

also signs pointing to where the hell it is - I spent enough years wandering around those halls looking for the Espresso Bar, thx

If anyone disagrees with any of these points you're ruining the scene.

I don't disagree with anything besides different bands... I WANNA PLAY IT AGAIN!! but no seriously, your got good points, i went to the ebar at least 50 times, and still those halls are confusing.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Feb 3,2009 1:11pm
I'm saying just not 3/4 of the same lineup - that gets old fast.

toggletoggle post by Dave_Maggot   at Feb 3,2009 1:14pm
i wandered the halls in a drunken stupor, with a full bladder. i ended up in some strange empty hall far away listening to dance instructors though the walls. i thought i was gonna get offed by a machete jason vorhees style haha.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Feb 3,2009 1:23pm
hahaha i came across you videotaping yourself in a Bass Ale mirror.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Feb 3,2009 1:23pm
funny you say that cause someone was killed with a machete the night before a couple miles away.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Feb 3,2009 1:24pm
machetes are SERIOUS brutality.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Feb 3,2009 1:28pm
Definitely switch up some of the line up. I would love to see Boarcorpse again, and I was pleasantly surprised by HYEO and Hivesmasher. Dysentery always kills but I always get killed at Dysentery shows.

toggletoggle post by Dave_Maggot   at Feb 3,2009 1:30pm
oh shit! so there was a possibillity of me actually really being macheted to death??? holy fuck.

toggletoggle post by Dave_Maggot   at Feb 3,2009 1:32pm
i probably wouldnt have felt it though. i'd just be walking around with a machete sticking out of my skull. haha

That was funny.

Bands show up and play at set times. In order to share equipment, ask around or bring your own shit.

I know this is alot to wrap all our heads around, but I know you guys can pull it off at the second metal show in MA.

The show was awesome. I usually like less bands, but it worked OK...obviously fixing the set times and starting on time would have helped, but hindsight is 20/20.

It also would have helped if I didn't (literally) have to resort to throwing things to get the bartender/owner's attention to buy overpriced beer.

Hivesmasher will come back anytime.

I totally understand, but i have a solution... When i wanted a drink, what i did was i put both my arms up in the air as if i wanted to be called on... twice!! and they always came over when they were finished with whatever they were doing. I guess it won't work if there are too many people doing it, but if it were only piters than i think it would work.
