I'm looking for something in the $300-500 range. I'm pretty sure I want an axis but I've read some mixed reviews. Help me rttp.

Gibraltar Intruder direct drive. $225 or so from MassMusic.net. You can even buy 2 sets!
They're really cheap, but the action is excellent.

I would recommend axis. I used to play with Iron Cobras but they fell apart. The axis are little weird to get used to, but they have an awesome system to adjust tension and they're fast as fuck
