Been working on a new mix for drums. I've got a decent bass and drum sound happening. The guitars still need work. This is a short clip I banged out just to work on, don't know if it's going to end up in anything permanently. I definitely need some new monitors!

Used EZdrummer with the DFH expansion for the drums. Bass is just a DI through a dry guitarport preamp, then tacked on Amplitube afterwards.

sounds sick brah.

when you gonna come up for some sick grillin action?

I have to give this a listen when I get home.

toggletoggle post by LongDeadGod  at Jul 19,2007 11:01am
sounds good, the bass is very tight

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead is watching you at Jul 19,2007 12:21pm
Yeah, the bass sound is coming along nice, especially since my bass gear is crap. However, I did cheat a little by purposely playing stuff that would stick out a little. I don't know how good it's going to sound when I go back and start applying the mix to my actual songs.

The guitars are still hurting though. I'm having a tough time fitting them in with the other instruments and getting them to sound the way I want. Tonight I'm gonna break out the spectrum analyzer.

Thanks.

Call me anytime, I'm always down for grillin! It's been a sad summer, We're so broke the only grilling/food action we've seen is mooching burgers at my mom's BBQ during my vacation.

I like where the bass is in the mix alot.

The guitars actually don't sound all that bad to me either.

I can't hear the bass drum very well in the mix, the BD sample is good though.

I'm not to keen on the high hat and snare samples though. They just sound too sampled like off a cheap electric drumset.

the mix is pretty good over all though. Are you doing vocal tracks also?

Did I say 'though' too many times in this post do you think?

The guitars don't sound BAD, per se, more that where they sit frequency wise is going to cause issues when I go to add vocals or keys, etc... I'm very happy so far with the bass, but I'm worried it won't carry over well in an actual song, since that is NOT typical of the type of bass line I write.

I call that the "condo effect". Since I'm usually mixing at 3 in the morning, and I live in a condo, I tend to slowly keep turning the low end down, and down, and down, etc.... I noticed that too, originally it was very up front, now only the higher end seems to cut through. I miss the priority days when I could mix as loud as I wanted.

I was thinking the opposite. I think the hats in the EZdrummer are a huge improvement over the samples in the DFH2 set I was using before. I think it will show more when I use my own drum parts, since I use a lot of different velocities. At varying velocities, the samples change, so it becomes a more natural sound.

The snare, however, I am very happy with. I think it sounds excellent the way it is now, and with a little EQ and 'verb it'll sound awesome. Again with the velocities, the midi groove I used has very little variation. Also, I've been considering switching the sample. That's the ludwig snare on the recording, But I've been tinkering with the Pearl a lot lately.

Ultimately, it's going to be a HUGELY vocal oriented project. Unfortunately, it's going to be a long time before I can do any vocal tracking. I just have no where I can do them right now, and I have no inclination to move my computer rig and rent a rehearsal room. This project is most likely going to take years, and vocals won't happen til I can actually afford to get a house and move.

I just listened to it again after a couple days of not hearing it, and I think a big issue is that the guitars are turned up too loud, making the snare and kick seem really weak and distant.

toggletoggle post by yummy at Jul 19,2007 9:23pm
This is not all that bad Arrowhead. I would agree that the guitar sounds a bit too loud. I'm sure once you're able to put vocals to it you'll have a good idea of what you're doing. Keep this shit up.

Sounds killah. I'm working on some finalized drum sequence for CORPULENT PUTRESCENCE. Shit is going to fucking slaaaaaaaaaaaam. I can't wait to start laying down the guitars and ultimately, the vocals.

toggletoggle post by Hungtableed at Jul 19,2007 9:25pm
I would agree that the rhythm guitar is a tad too loud and that the kick needs to be cranked.

What are you using for drums?

toggletoggle post by Hungtableed at Jul 19,2007 11:18pm
Too embarrassing to admit at the moment (Drumsite!) who said that?. But, I do have DKFH2 which I can run through as a virtual instrument plug-in using the midi-sequencer in Cubase LE. However, I don't have enough ram to run it even remotely smoothly so I don't use it....yet. I can't wait though, that shit is unbelievable. It's the only fake-drum sequencing I've ever heard that actually sounds real, especially after you track the guitars and vocals and shit.

I'm calculating that with a good 2G's ram and the shit will run killer!

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead is watching you at Jul 19,2007 11:30pm
What is Drumsite!?

DKFH2 is a good set of sounds. Unlike the EZDrummer + DFH pack, there's no post production on the sounds, so it's a much more versatile kit. However, I dropped it eventually because the interface was clunky and the control over the mix and cymbals were poor.

You could probably run DFH2 with as little as 1 gig of memory. I ran it fine on my old system.

toggletoggle post by Hungtableed at Jul 20,2007 12:00am
I bet you're probably right about only having 1G, but I currently have 512mb and I want to max (I know, it's sad) my system to its utmost capacity the next time I upgrade. Unfortunately, that is only 2Gs ram.
Just google 'Drumsite!' - I only got the free version where I compose a beat then run it back and record it on to my hard disc 8-track. I can't wait until I don't have to use that shit. I just happen to have had some good sounds that I use to customize my 'set' on that program.
The saddest part of this all is that I can actually play the drums quite well. Why do I waste my time with this shit?

Wow, I spent all night working on a better mix. I got it sounding pretty good, and was proud of it.

Then I listen to something like this:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=147108&songID=5070411

using the same DFH samples I have.

I need some new monitors.

sounds sick.
wish i could figure out how to use dfh
i'll need to re-install it.

are those real drums or a machine? they sound lifeless and stale.

Holy shit. Fucking kiiiiiiiiller! I can't wait until I can use DKFH2 with Cubase to make shit if I can make drums this tight and realistic sounding.

Thanks, man. I didn't actually do the programming, it's just some simple loops I strung together from the EZDrummer groove clips to test out mixes. Thus why it's so simple and has no cymbals, etc....

I've got a new mix I've been fiddling with, but I haven't dumped it down yet. I'll try to post it tonight/tomorrow.

I think the particular song I linked is DFH2. That Bulb kid and the kid from Tesseract both manage to get some pretty impressive sounds out of DFH. If you have a legit copy of DFH2, make sure you register on the toontrack forums. There's a patch for DFH2 that fixes the hats and toms. Also, there's a DFD streaming update you can download. Finally, search the forums for the "Sonor of Metal" presets. It's a folder full of screenshots of the setting Thomas Haake/Frederick Thorendaal used for their drum tracks in the Sonor of Metal demo. If you don't have the Waves plugins that they used, you can still get similar sounds using the same basic settings with other comp/EQ.

Okay, I posted the newer mix. Still not sure if the bottom end has enough presence due to the "condo effect"

I brought the guitars down a bit, changed their panning, and tweaked the EQ. Made the drums seem a lot louder.

And for Niccolai, I switched snares, and switched the hi hats to just the overhead mic to make em sound less harsh and drum machiney.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=726882

The new mix is NeverMessWithASicilianWhenDeathIsOnTheLine

Let me know how the bottom end sounds on your speakers.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Jul 24,2007 1:07pm
Trying to switch some of my already recorded tunes I did with DFH2 over to this new mix. You'd think since toontrack had a GM kit set-up in DFH2 that they would create a converter or GM setting for EZDrummer to allow people to do exactly this procedure. However, they don't, and now I'm stuck moving every damned drum one at a time.

Toontrack has this way of being so brilliant, yet so stupid at the same time.
