New site? Maybe some day.

I bought this game because I kept hearing it was pretty much the benchmark for graphics, and I wanted to see how it played on my new computer. I got the gold edition, with the director's cut of the original game, and the new expansion included as well. Yee-yikes! I've always been a bit squemish with horror movies and such, but this game keeps creeping me out. In a good way, of course. Lots of gore, and that creepy assed little girl that keeps popping up at random. I re-mapped my flashlight button to one of the extras on my mouse, because this game is quickly making me scared of the dark.
I gotta say, I've got all the settings maxxed and so far this is the best looking game I own. I know I'm pretty behind since this game came out a while ago, but this is the first system I've built that can handle a game like this. |
|
as an addendum, I'm playing with all the lights off and the sound turned way up, which definitely adds to the creepy factor. Too bad the bright blue lights from my computer case spoil it a little. |
|
Very fun game. The code was pretty bloated at the time it was released (dishing out less eye candy than it should for the resources it used) but that's not much of an issue now that computers are faster/cheaper and the game is a year or so old.
The game was definiitely fun. It was by no means a trailblazer as far as graphics/stroyline/gameplay goes but it was still great.
And I'm the same way with those types of games. The ONLY way to play them is with the sound jacked up and the lights off.
(....and I also have to deal with bright blue lights illuminating the room too haha) |

There haven't been a whole lot of good first person shooters out in a while. I've been playing 0 games lately.
Games I'm looking forward to and planning to upgrade for:
Bioshock (this game looks absolutely fucking ridiculous graphics-wise)
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Half-Life 2 Episode Two |
|
this game fucking sucks, i bought it thinking it'd be like resistance. |
|
I haven't heard of bioshock yet, I'm gonna check that out.
I haven't come across any issues with performance yet on F.E.A.R. I tested around 50 FPS with all the settings cranked and soft shadows on. However, I assume I might need to drop down a few settings when I go to play multiplayer. I'm not ready for multiplayer yet, I still die every minute or so in the first chapter of the single player game. I depend on the slo-mo pretty heavily, so I doubt I'd last very long in a multiplayer game.
Have you played Stalker: chernobyl yet? I've seen good reviews, and if it's anything like F.E.A.R. I'll have to pick up a copy. So far the only games I have installed are WoW, GuildWars, F.E.A.R., and Supreme Commander, and WoW has lost all my interest, with GuildWars fast following suit. I like the FPS better than the RPG style shit, I guess. |

What's resistance?
What didn't you like about F.E.A.R.? |

Your beautifully articulated criticism has made me reflect deeply on my past experience with the game and changed my entire perception of it. Bravo. This game sucks. |

I actually bought that game a few weeks ago. I popped it in and played it for about 5 minutes and said to myself... "this seems to have an RPG'ish quality to it" and got scared and threw it across the room. haha. I don't know if that's really the case, though. It seems to run like shit on my aging computer, though. I'm going to read through the instruction booklet at work or something and then give it another shot at some point.
And have you played doom3 & HL2 yet on this machine? I know they probably seem popular/mainstream/overhyped but goddamnit they're fun, especially on a really good fucking computer and a good set of speakers (HL2's sound is absolutely fucking amazing. it makes the game.) |
|
I'm hesitant to try doom, as I hated the first game back when I was in college. I know it's come a long way since, but I still find myself avoiding it.
I have yet to try any of the Half life games. I was checking out HL2 at the store, but was wondering if I'd be better off starting with the first game, plot-wise. |

I enjoy some rpg stuff, but at the same time I don't see how RPG and FPS elements would mix very well. Plus, after 2 years too many of playing World of Warcrack, I've burnt myself out on RPGs for a while. I'll have to see how Stalker handles it.

Download the doom3 demo for free. That should give you a pretty good idea of how the rest of it is.
And the original half-life games are fantastic, but I don't know how dated they're be now graphics/gameplay wise. HL2's storyline has little to do with HL1 for some ungodly reason since HL1 had an awesome storyline. I don't think you'd have a hard time jumping straight into HL2. It's like an episode of Lost where they don't fucking tell you anything. You'll play it and be confused about what's going on, but you'll be just as confused as everybody else who's played HL1. |

Okay, I just got my first shotgun. Shot a soldier at almost point blank range in the face. I looked around after, and saw his head laying across the room. When I looked down, the headless corpse had a fountain of blood spewing out of it's neck.
This game officially rocks.

i might have to pick this up |
|
Since it's an older game, you can get it pretty cheap. The gold edition with the expansion and extras included is $40, and the Original game by itself is $30. I think I've already gotten my $40 of fun out of it on the first day I've been playing. |
|
You bastards. I paid out the asshole to play the original and the expansion pack when they came out. |

I just got to the part where you drop down into the air ducts, and in the dark air duct that little girl comes crawling up and dissapears. Scared the SHIT out of me.

What do you mean it looks like a PS2 game?
And what's so bad about the gameplay? I'm usually pretty picky with gameplay in games and have a low tolerance for shitty gameplay. FEAR didn't bother me. |
