Abe CUnningham - its a shame how much i rip him off...great chops, ridiculously tight in the pocket, disgusting amounts of groove

Stewart Copeland - 'nuff said

Travis Barker - Underrated by underground music fans and fans who just think they know it all, but the dude is nasty. If anyone bothere to pay attention to what he's playing in Blink 182, boxcar racer, etc instead of just claiming gay, they'd hear a dude trying to do something different in a genre where everythings pretty cookie cut. Grooves well, he's got speed and chops for days, great drum sound, and probably writes the most unique drum parts i've ever heard

Kevin Talley - pretty much my main influence in heavy music. Blasts well, hits hard, grooves, and knows when to play and when not to play. Unfortunately i've heard he isnt as up to par as he used to be but, hey what can ya do.

Darren Jesse - Underrated and damn well unknown. Drummer from Ben Folds Five. GREAT jazz chops, tasteful and fuckin hits hard (recurring theme, i know3). I find myself ripping him off a lot lately but with good reason.

Dave Witte - ONE FOOT!?

Adrian Young - (drummer from No Doubt) Pretty much the reason I play drums. I heard tragic Kingdom when I was about 8 and knew that was what i wanted to do. Huge Copeland influence in this guy and thus, in me.

Honorable Mention:
dude from Decapitated
dude from Meshuggah
Mark from BYD

Chris Pennie, Dave Garibaldi, Gene Hoglan, Richard Christy, Blake Richardson, KEVIN TALLEY, Dennis Chambers (fast hands meng), Tomas Haake (sickening, ooh frickin wee), Van Williams, myself (ha!), Henry Ranta (probably my biggest influence), and Martin Mendes.

local guys: I'm a big fan of Moe, Dane from Porphyria, Tyler DiPaola from OTI, Alex from TTOS, Wood from Acariya/CommandPres fame, Jon Syverson from Daughters is groovy as hell, and my former teacher, George Correia.

my list is ever changing, and I've heard a lot of good drumming from bands I've played with and listened to and just can't remember names. But if you've ever picked up a drum stick, I respsect you and you've probably taught me something no matter how much youre talent or lack thereof is considered. Percussion is just a hell of a lot of fun, and everything I hear, I emulate.

toggletoggle post by Murph nli at Jan 31,2007 5:25pm
Moe, youre right about Travis Barker and Stewart COpeland, they should be on my list. Barker once cited Mikkey Dee from King Diamond fame as one of his favorite, and Them to me is one of the best drumming albums, hands fucking down.

The legends: Peart, Bonham, Copeland, Moon, Chambers, Bozzio, Bruford, Weckl, this list could go on forever...

The big guns: Tony Laureano (Nile, 1349, Dimmu Borgir-live, Internecine, Aurora Borealis, etc.,) Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal, Malevolent Creation, Divine Empire, and he played on Nile's Black Seeds CD,) John Longstreth (Origin, Dim Mak,) Kevin Talley (Dying Fetus, Misery Index,) Gene Hoglan (Death,) George Kollias (Nile,) Raul Varela (Impaled,) Nicholas Barker (Cradle of Filth's GOOD records, Dimmu Borgir and now Testament,) Charlie Benante (Anthrax & S.O.D.,) Dave Lombardo (Slayer & Grip Inc.,) Vitek (Decapitated,) Pete Sandoval Morbid Angel,) Juhana Karlsson (Amoral,) Espen Antonsen (Blood Red Throne,) Per Moller Jensen (The Haunted,) Danny Herrera (Napalm Death,) Steve Asheim (Deicide,) Paul Mazurkiewicz (Cannibal Corpse,) this could be another way too long list...

The more popular dudes: Thomas Lang, Bill Stevenson (mostly his work with Black Flag,) Danny Carey, Tim "Herb" Alexander, etc.

Definitely have to back mOe on Travis Barker, he's got style.

Cris Adler, Chris Pennie and Joey Jordison get honorable mentions too.

Not a fan of Jason Bittner. How does he win best metal drummer while anyone in my metal list above is out there playing? I have no idea.

And here's a thumbs up to my drum bro's who have made it big:
Brad with The Red Chord, and Mark with Bury Your Dead, Hamartia, Piecemeal & Between the Buried and Me.

the kid from the Esoteric is also quite good, listen to their older EP especially the song "When the Grave Gives Up the Ghost" (was he in Neurosis?) and also the kid from Misery Signals (he's more in the pocket on Mirrors but his work on the EP and Malice... was superb). Taylor Hawkins did a lot of great work for Alanis Morrisette and in Foo Fighters, the kid just has great taste and understands nuance.
