They havn't played Aces High in years...

I for one think this is awesome. They've been catering to the people who want to hear the same songs over and over again for too long. More power to them for this, I can't wait to see them on Friday. My only regret is that I'm not gonna hear any of the Brave New World and Dance Of Death stuff.

toggletoggle post by Anthony at Oct 5,2006 2:56pm
Retzam: Yeah it is cool that they are playing new stuff, but I dont think anyone who paid good money for a seat expected to hear the whole damn new album. I'm still psyched to see Maiden, but I really really hope the setlist is different on Friday.

I don't give a shit about the new album. I want to hear the classics! *vexed*

toggletoggle post by Josh_Martin at Oct 5,2006 3:05pm
Hartford was the first show of the tour. I heard that that may have been a "special" set list for the opening show and the rest of the tour will be normal. Don't know if that's true though.
I wouldn't want to hear the same old songs over and over either. I would like to hear DIFFERENT old songs. Play Purgatory, play Invaders, play the entire fucking KILLERS album.

A friend dragged me to the '99 tour (1st tour with Brucie back, I didn't even want to go for free but somehow he got me to agree to go). When we got to the Orpheum I said "if they don't open with Aces High I'm walking out." That's what they opened with when I saw them on the Powerslave tour (as heard on Live After Death) and it fucking ruled.

They opened with Aces High.

I doubt it will be different. I don't see how fans can honestly have a big problem with this when it's sandwiched between two era tours where they didn't/aren't play(ing) any new stuff at all. I honestly didn't expect the entire new album either, but, having heard a few statements made by Dickenson in the past year or so I definitely expected to hear a good 60% of it at least.

As much as you try to rationalize it, to 99% of the fans that setlist still fucking blows. Fans matter, not Maiden thinking their new album is so good that the audience should sit through hearing the whole damn thing live. The songs are sooo fucking long tooo ughhh....

It's also my first time seeing Maiden. Every show Maiden does there are gonna be a LOT of people there to see them for the first time. Does that mean that they have to play Number Of The Beast, Run To The Hills, The Trooper, Wrathchild, Sanctuary, and Running Free at every show? Maiden has so many good songs that no matter what they do play there's always gonna be someone saying "I can't believe they didn't play [song title]! What the fuck are they thinking?!"

I don't care about hearing those overplayed songs, but I wanna hear a setlist representative of their career and the albums that I love. Not the one new album I got recently and listened to twice. I love pretty much every song on everything up to Seventh Son and the most recent three are great too. I'm not some picky asshole, but that setlist from CT sucks.... period.

toggletoggle post by retzam at Oct 5,2006 3:25pm
I'd bet that most of the really disappointed people fit into one of three categories:

1) People who have only heard the hits
2) People who don't have the new album and/or only have a few Maiden albums
3) People who listen to tons of metal and go to concerts expecting to hear their favorite metal songs

1 and 2 clearly don't matter, I think we can all agree to that. Regarding 3: Iron Maiden are pissing off a lot of metalheads because they are doing a tour not for the sake of metal, but for the sake of rock music in general: they are releasing an album and doing a tour to promote the album. That's what bands do. I look at this and I see a really awesome group of musicians coming around and playing their most recent collection of really great songs. I'm not going to this to be a metal head and flip out to songs that metal heads have been flipping out to for the last 2 and a half decades. I'm going to see musicians play music, and that's what I think they are going for on this tour.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Oct 5,2006 3:26pm
i can agree with that, but there are many diehard fans that have faithfully followed them for decades, that they should honor by playing songs they know they want to hear. its good to play your new stuff, but appeal to those that have carried you financially since the start.

I don't mean to imply that you're a picky asshole. What you are describing (the desire to see a setlist that represents their career) is the whole point of the era tours. Go catch them on those.

Why can't they just evenly distribute the setlist between old and new?
Some bands understand fans want to hear the old shit. Such as, Destruction played about 75% old shit the last time around, and then just three or four newer songs

Hallowed be Thy Name is one of the best Maiden songs ever. Some songs on NotB get a little boring after a while though. I can't stand the vocal part on the verse of Invaders anymore, it annoys me. Overall I'd say the next three albums were way better than NotB.

I think that those saying \"who plays their entire new album on a tour?\" are 13 year olds with no understanding of Rock and Metal.
I can think of many examples of bands who do this. It catapulted a good band, Pink Floyd, to the status of revolutionaries. Its a great album, and its a great setlist. If you want to hear the classics, go to a classics tour.

Every time Iron Maiden comes to the U.S. they bring the greatest hits set list. And frankly that was getting a little old. For everyone complaining about this set list, shove it. Maiden was just here last summer playing material only on the first four albums. Not to mention they got a huge response in Boston. So for the 10 or so of you that were dissapointed, eat it. Yes yes, shame on Maiden for being original, bold, definitive, memorable and doing something different. A 10 out of 10 both in Hartford and in Boston. Maiden Rule!

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Oct 8,2006 1:38pm
I went to the Camden Tweeter show last night. The first time seeing Maiden in 20 years. I heard ahead of time that I was in for the whole new album (their best in over 10 years) and I was dissapointed at the set list as well. But I have to say, the show kicked ass. The new songs sounded great live and you could tell the band was into it. After seeing over 80 different shows, I can tell you that means a lot more than a band just slogging through songs they are tired of playing. Great energy. That said, I hope they come around again soon and add more of the old tunes.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Oct 8,2006 1:39pm
By the way, the set list at the Camden Tweeter Center last night was exactly the same as the earlier US shows.

They do that all the time. In the last five years they have done what, three best of tours including one just last year. (Granted only the real early stuff but there was the Edward the Great tour before that and at least one more, the name of which escapes me.) Personally I'm psyched, though I do wish they would at least move the songs around and intersperse the classics with the new stuff rather than playing the whole album in order. But what the hell, I'll go anyway and have a great time.

If you don't like this then maybe you should reconsider if you are a Maiden fan after all...? And why complain, didn't they devote an entire tour last year on their old material?

I can't wait to hear MAIDEN play the new album in its entirety... This is the best thing the band have recorded since POWERSLAVE. They must be proud to have made their best record in over 20 years and no wonder they want to take it on the road.
After doing a tour of Classic material they must be itching to play something fresh. I for one am sick of NOTB, Run To The Hills etc. being played in almost EVERY Maiden set since 1982.
I would love them to bring back ACES HIGH, Ancient Mariner, Stranger In A Strange Land etc. but I assume they're going to do another Greatest Hits Tour after this one when they release the next "History Of Maiden" DVD, which I would think would focus on Powerslave through to Fear Of The Dark when Bruce left the band.
Fair enough, for the younger fans it would be nice for them to hear songs like The Trooper and Wrathchild but I'm glad the band have regained their fire and for me they can play whatever the fuck they want to!!!
UP THE IRONS!!! Back at the top of their game!!!

I dont like the new one very much. Most the music sounds like "Brave new world" Or " No prayer for the dying " with different lyrics-- The songs are low vitality, there are no good hooks,, ahhh It "Iron Maiden" So I bought it anyways.

No Trooper? No Number of the Beast? no Run to the Hills? I'm glad they play Fear of the Dark. This is the worst set list I've ever seen in an Iron Maiden concert!

Dude, you can't really say that. If Maiden don't play those songs there is problebly a reason behind it, don't you think? To be honest i really like what they doing here. I'v heard them play RTH, Trooper & Number of the Beast so many times that i don't care if they play them again or not. I'v allredy seen them do it, now i want something different!

Even the Brits think this set list sucks:

"Review: Iron MaidenDec 12 2006

Gavin Allen, South Wales Echo

Cardiff International Arena

IRON Maiden came close to vindicating their selfish decision last night but dropped the ball at the last.

In playing their 14th album A Matter Of Life and Death in its entirety - and each track one after the other at that - they were bound to disappoint swathes of the sold-out crowd, with even the hard-core fans tolerating rather than worshipping.

The thirst for them pre-gig saw thousands of devil horns silhouetted against the CIA's soulless white walls as the crowd chanted "Maiden! Maiden! Maiden!"

Vocalist Bruce Dickinson bouncy-balled magnificently onto the stage but when five tracks in he confirmed they would play the whole album there was a negative reaction; largely silence, even the odd boo.

It's a shame because the war-obsessed album - the stage set was designed like a World War Two bunker with broken masonry and sandbags - is among their strongest material.

Classically mock-operatic, the likes of These Colours Don't Run, The Longest Day and The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg would grace any of their previous albums.

But when that lot was over, after forcing people to tolerate 70-odd minutes of such indulgence, the pay-off simply wasn't enough.

The crowd exploded into mosh circles to the opening bars of Fear Of The Dark but the follow up of Iron Maiden, Two Minutes To Midnight, The Evil That Men Do and Hallowed Be Thy Name, while glorious in themselves, was too eclectic.

Maiden won't regret the decisions they made last night, but their fans will."

This is too all the ones complaining about maidens set list... YOU SHOULD BE PRIVALEDGED TO SEE THEM.. i wish i could have gone to one, but i'll wait patiently until Download festival. maiden rule n if they wanna play the whole new album n a few classics then let them. There new album rules.. n the big question seems to be: who plays the whole album?... we'll what do think bands do when they've got only 1 or 2 albums? they play there albums... n maiden are still fresh, they still want to get there music hear, jus like new bands. ok maiden have got loadza CD's but they are proud of the songs on the new album and want you 2 hear them all live not jus a couple. n as for not playin classics like number of the best n run to the hills etc.. (yes they are awesome songs) but think about it, practicly since number of the beast they have played those songs every gig.. after a while they jus thought, no... lets not play them. n i dont no what most people are gettin upset for... you'll see them again in the future n im sure they will play your fave classics. fingers crossed they re-do the powerslave tour as its been rumoured now n again, then we'll all die happy! so remember... love maiden always, don't put them down jus cuz u dint get exactly what you wanted, let the play what they want to play, its more fun that way!
