Sometimes I wear my Cut Throat hoodie to work. It's a black hoodie with white lettering with a C on one side and a T on the other and Cut Throat Boston over it. This guy at my work calls it my "gothic sweatshirt. " Every time I hear it all I see is red. The synthpop/EBM scene has taken over the entire 'goth' subculture, a lot of the VNV fans aren't necessarily goths though (gamers, rivets, poppers, emos, etc).

One of the reason the EBM shows draw well is because there are so few of them. Lot of kids at Umass were into VNV/Wumpscut/etc while I was there, all would religiously attend their performances.

I like the occasional goth band, I LOVE darkwave. I've met a lot of legit goths, they're usually even more annoying and pretentious than the mall goths.

More pretentious, definitely, since even a naked mole rat is more pretentious than a mall goth. More annoying? Not a chance in hell.

darkwave is good, ebm is good vnv nation is good. I like rivets i want to meet more, but there really aren't any at middlesex community college in bedford, there aren't alot of metallers there either i hate mcc i've been there for 3 years. Im not in hi skool, and the ramones are real punk

I definitely agree with this post, and it's exactly the reason why I haven't been to a goth club in years. I got really annoyed with the pretentious people who only play dress up as a way to get laid on the weekends. Most of them had no clue who half of the goth bands were that I would mention in casual conversation. Besides, I'm too much of a crazy bitch for most of those people to handle. They also don't share my morbid sense of humor or my love of black metal and death metal... and none of them would ever be caught drinking beer and screaming Einherjer lyrics.

Some real goth bands that I actually listen to: The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, London After Midnight, Autumn (and I'm not talking about that European doom metal band here... I'm talking about the Autumn from the U.S. that plays goth), Mors Syphilitica, Switchblade Symphony, Clan of Xymox, Sunshine Blind, Corpus Delicti, etc.

As far as I'm concerned, the goth scene is dead. Most of the real goths got bored with it a long time ago, and the ones who still hang around are mostly attention whores who no one ever wanted to hang out with in the first place.

Personally I've never met anyone claiming to be goth.

I've met people who listen to Bauhaus, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Cure... and various other gothic bands, however they never claim the lable, and they might be depressed from time to time, but they're quite down to earth and have a great sense of humour.

I myself listen to a lot of Bauhaus, The Cure... but I mix up my "standard" goth tunes with a lot of metal and darkwave.

I don't think there is such a thing as a real goth... they're all gone, gone, gone.
