Call venues like everyone else... Don't waste your money on something you can do yourself. |

Network with bands. Talk to bands about trading shows. And basically it's easier and cheaper to go out and get yourself on shows than it is to hiring a booking agent you can trust, paying them, and hoping they get you on decent shows. You know what shows your band wants to be on so no need to add the middle man. |

Once you've made some waves beyond your local area, gotten a record deal, etc, then you get an agent (maybe Kenmore or someone if they'll take you). Look what agents did for bands like Converge, Cave In, etc.
In the meantime, do your own networking. Use MySpace or other online methods to build a contacts list. Get club information so you can book your band directly on gigs or set up your own shows. |

Damnit, that must be what I've been missing! |

Yeah man, don't waste your time and money with booking agents at this point. It seems the only time agents come in handy is if you're going on an actual tour to places where you have no contacts or are ready to hop onto tours with the big boys, and now that isn't necessary with the unending networking capabilities of the internet, like DHTH said. |

Yup, we've played with Exodus, Mastodon, Moonspell, Overkill, Crowbar, Entombed and a ton of other nationals in several different states, and all without any booking agents or management. We also were able to make $300 - $500 at paying gigs (almost unheard an unsigned metal band) because we handled the negotiating ourselves, and didn't have to pay any agencies a cut. Now at this point in our careers, we could probaly benefit from booking help to get to a national level, but it would have been a waste to seek it at the beginning. Get yourself to a point where you feel like you have gone as far as you can on your own, then seek the help. Just make sure the person in the band delegated to handle the booking is 1). honest, 2). organized, and 3). good with money. |
