This question wasn't raised in this particular article, but it crossed my mind while reading it...what's going to happen to those who live near industrial sized chicken houses/concentrated animal-feeding operations when the avian bird flu hits the U.S.?

toggletoggle post by SacreligionNLI at Feb 23,2006 12:31pm
probably the same thing that happened to sars and monkey pox

OH MY GOD SARS

ha, SARS=nasty flu...that's it

people die when they don't have reliable treatment, such as overpopulated third world countries

toggletoggle post by HailTheLeaf  at Feb 23,2006 12:57pm
doesn't help if they are really young or old either

toggletoggle post by SacreligionNLI at Feb 23,2006 12:59pm
true...everytime mother nature throws out a way to control the ever-growing population we find a way to beat it...and no one sees a problem with this

toggletoggle post by HailTheLeaf  at Feb 23,2006 1:13pm edited Feb 23,2006 1:14pm
I see a problem with it every time I'm sitting in traffic, or seeing woods getting mauled so new houses and malls can be built.

Do people really need a reason not to live in the South?

I might be laughing now but it's going to suck when I catch birdflu and have to guzzle NyQuil to stave off death.

Calling sars and bird flu a "just a bad flu" is like telling a girl who was gang raped it was "just bad sex".

A "bad flu" doesn't kill you. Sars and the avian flu WILL. The whole point is that modern day antibiotics and innoculizations have built up a strain of influenza that is nearly impervious to our current methods of treatment. In case you haven't noticed, the flu is a virus. Only it's symptoms are treatable, we have yet to find a cure for a virus. If antibiotics can't help your body shake it, you can die.

You can still recieve treatment. That's the beauty of the american medical system. You'll just be left with a bill that will take the rest of your newly saved life to pay off.

thats true, but over here, regardless of your insurance status, you will receive the same treatment.

A bad flu kills plenty of people every flu season, people do die from the flu all the time. Overuse of antibiotics had definately fucked us, they're even in our food now which will make matters worse...

Actually, it's a shitload cheaper to live in the South. My rent, which used to be $1400 in MA has been cut to just under $400 a month here in NC. And that's just rent. Food and neccessities are much cheaper, and for people like me who smoke cigs they are WAY cheaper than up north. So there are plenty of reasons for moving or living in the south, being able to get ahead in life and have something for my kids is a major issue for me and moving here is helping alot.

The only problem is that the majority of Americans see SARS and Bird Flu as "just a bad flu" because of the huge media scare over them. If people think they're going to die they will go to the hospital even if they don't have insurance, but if they think they just have "a bad flu" they're not going to risk the costs of medical care.

toggletoggle post by SacreligionNLI at Feb 23,2006 11:51pm
the media spends lots of time and money coming up with catchy slogans profiting off of death and sorrow because it sells...i don't take anything i see on the news too seriously anymore, but maybe i'm just desensitized or something

ive lived in jacksonville, fl. poole, georgia, san antonio, texas and norfolk/virginia beach

and i will gladly say all of them are better then how it is up here in the northeast.

the only thing i miss about it up here is the city and friends, if i could get one or the other down in VA id never leave there.

where in the northeast can you find a job at a 24/7 pornshop, i ask you that !

You nailed it. In Florida, there is no state income tax, and the cost of living is just much cheaper. Besides that, Jacksonville is such an up and coming city. There is so much construction going on everywhere. It's a lot better than depressing, old, run down Worcester. I flew into Boston last year from here, and it was just so depressing. Don't get me wrong, I don't love it down here or anything, but it's definitely not bad either...

I'm well aware that the south is cheaper. But I'm born and raised a Boston girl, and I'd rather pay more (not to mention wage is higher here to make up for...though it hasn't been lately...the cost of living.) than live amonst the hot, buggy, run down south... filled with right wing, racist, bible thumping, slow moving, Bush loving, rednecks down there. No offense.

toggletoggle post by whiskey_weed_and_women  at Feb 24,2006 3:23pm
you clearly are a product of american tv, its not all that hot, and unless you're in a swamp i dont think you'd have to worry about bugs. never saw the south as run down....its pretty active with building itself up. as far as the racists, bible thumping, bush loving folk, clear up here in the northeast there is none of that.

no offense, to the great white north

There are some of those fucks up here, but not nearly as much as down there. I've never seen a clan rally here, yet Chris ended up throwing rocks at one in SC. Like I said I've been to the south, we've driven to and from NC like 4 times, florida, etc. I hated it. It's gross. I'm staying in the city where I belong.

I don't know the exact address but I see it everytime I drive down to Providence. I forget if it's after that pyramid building or before it. Just look to the right while heading south and you'll see it and its glorious banner declaring "OPEN 24/7"

toggletoggle post by pam   at Feb 24,2006 3:37pm
well...not THIS city. haha. I like the southcoast in general though, just not this particular area of it. Some parts of NB are sweet. Dartmouth is nice, Fairhaven is beautiful. I'm just broke, so I live with the wild minorities are.
