New site? Maybe some day.
Cryptopsy (although the new cd sucks), Pyrexia, Mindrot, or Iniquity? Discuss. |
Black Sabbath. For the 70s, they were much heavier than any of those bands you just listed are today. |
Any Halo and old Anathema are really the only times I've ever been overwhelmed with the heaviness of the recordings. Any heavy band in this day and age owes everything to Sabbath though. |
it also all depends on your definition of heavy...
zeppelin had a lot of heavy parts back in their day as well |
heaviest band ever?
it would be a band like Merzbow or Disciples of Annihilation. |
Define "heavy". The loudest? Fastest? Most distorted?
To me, "heavy" is more on the listeners part, a feeling inspired by the music. For some, Zeppelin might be the heaviest thing they ever heard. For others, Slayer. etc...
immolation/old cryptopsy. |
Id go with either Cannibal Corpse,SLayer or Napalm Death.I cant choose just one |
I would have to say one of the heaviest bands I have ever heard is definately Mythic, For '93 when the EP came out...Nothing could compare in my opinion |
digested flesh...hands down |
Electric Wizard. There is that Black Sabbath again.
I've never heard an album heavier than Dopethrone. It simply hasn't happened. |

How is Digested Flesh any heavier than the 313,000 other brutal gore/death metal bands who more or less sound exactly the same? None of that shit is heavier than Symphonies of Sickness.

I made an electronic song and whenever I played it in my car above 5, the fuses would blow. |

The Reverend is the heaviest band ever. |

Did Electric Wizard get their name from the Sabbath songs Electric Funeral and The Wizard? |
Incidentally, I gotta go with Sabbath too, for reasons already stated by others. |
Reverend was a cheesey 80's band.
I'm betting that fu manchu is pretty heavey live. also, almost no one is heavier than providence's the body. one of their sets and my colon is completely cleaned out. |
meshuggah and crowbar.... end of discussion. |
I always catch alot of shit for saying this, especially from extreme Death/Black Metal fans, but for me, it's Pantera. Just the attitude those guys had when they played was unbeatable. And for me, nothing beats the ending breakdown in "domination".....I still get goosebumps everytime i hear that. |
the fat boys were probably the heaviest band ever...before one died and the other became a fitness guru |

Yes. And it is not heavier than many other albums I own in the same genre. There is not an original idea on the whole disc, how could it be heavier than its forebears who created the form of music it is aping?
I guess we just have different descriptions of heavy, is all.

Humm...Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Sleep, Sepultura, Slayer...I can't pick just one here. |

Supercoven crushes Dopethrone imo...Come My Fanatics somewhere between...
My personal standard for extreme heaviness in metal starts with the Usurper-Threshold of the Usurper ep. Then, I dunno, maybe Doro. |
All the Electric Wizard stuff is pretty great, I like Dopethrone better than Supercoven but hey, as long as there are people listening to them I'm not going to argue |
Sunn O))) Black 1. I'll be there tomorrow to see if it's true. I always thought Nasum had a crushing guitar sound and very loud drum recordings which made them heavy to my ear. Obviously Sabbath innovated the concept of heavy. |
early crowbar if your weigh all the band members on a scale there the heavyest band |
I think It Will End In Pure Horror is the heaviest band right now. Me and Rich are about 600 pounds combined. We really need to fatten up our drummer and bass player though. |

I think Poison Idea's got you all beat. With Pig Champion in the band, you could have four Richard Simmons clones backing him up, and they'd still tip scales.

this is very tough; i'm sure as soon as i post this, i'll think of 10 other bands that are equally heavy or heavier for that matter.
i will definitely say black sabbath; they've been my favorite band since i was 10 or 11. listening to their first 3 albums at that age was mindnumbing. it's still an experience to listen to it now. if they had the access to some of the greatest, heaviest production that we have these days when they went in the studio, i don't think any stereo systems could handle the awesomeness.
watchmaker is one of the loudest bands i've ever seen live, though that's not exactly in the category of "heavy."
neurosis, on "locust star" to be precise, is one of the heaviest songs ever, in the sense that arrowhead discussed earlier. when the world ends, i expect to hear that song playing throughout the entire globe. |

I think the word "heavy" doesn't acurately describe those kinds of bands. I think "brutal" would be more descriptive. Heavy is what you'd say about a band like Sabbath or Blue Cheer. Having an an old fart father from the 60s-70s hard rock/metal era I hear him say heavy quite a bit. Heavy isn't Brutal.
I do however, think Mindrot does have more heavy qualities to it.

I remember hearing porphyria's 2000 demo for the first time and shitting my pants thinking it was the heaviest thing I had ever heard. |
Hand Choke Neck....no contest. |
Buried at sea is the heaviest. |
early type blow negative.I cant move. |
the Swans during their "Cop/Raping a Slave"period... |
in terms of heaviness, Warhorse all the way. |
The first time I heard those guys I noticed a difference between them and the death metal I had heard in the past, a style involving a certain seperation in the mix between the vocals and the music that many subsequent bands emulated. Not my favorite style by a long shot, but a notable mention for this discussion.
It's kind of impossible, as others have pointed out, to name the heaviest definitive bands in the world, because there are countless ridiculously heavy bands out there (some of which we probably haven't heard yet). So instead I took the approach of picking bands that were considered watermarks for different takes on metal that pushed the envelope in terms of heavy distortion and brutality. |

Devourment is not the heaviest band that ever lived, they are a 6th generation death metal band that does the same thing 21,000 other death metal bands do, and they're not even faster or more brutal than many others in their field (assuming that is yoru criteria for considering them the heaviest).
Even though they might sound slower and not appeal to the ADD of the death metal newb of today, Slowly We Rot and Realm of Chaos were a lot fucking heavier death metal albums. A lot.
Sabbath is still the heaviest band ever, for when they first came out. Nowadays, Electric Wizard. Maybe some of the Boris records. |
AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED SUBLIME CADAVERIC DECOMPOSTION SEXCREMENT |

I don't think Devourment is the heaviest. I also don't think they do the same thing that 21,000 other death metal bands do.
I'd say my personal criteria for heaviness would have to be crushing brutal breakdowns maybe with some disgusting guttural vocals. It's all about the groove nigga'. The hell with speed.
Fair enough.
I guess when I think of heavy I just think of music that is both disturbing and depressing. The first time I heard Electric Wizard or Saint Vitus I wanted to hang myself it was that oppressive and depressing. The first time I heard Devourment I thought "oh, it's another guttural death metal band". Yeah, they mix it a little different than other bands but musically they are doing the same thing. It's not that I think they are bad, I just don't think they are heavy considering what's out there already. |

Anaal Nathrakh is crushingly heavy. first time i heard "Pandemonic Hyperblast" i was scared. Everything they put out is heavy as fuck. Molesting the Decapitated was crushing too. i Think Effigy of the Forgotten is one of the heaviest albums ever. its wicked brutal now and back when it first came out, there was nothing pretty much like it. it must have been TOO brutal to listen to then. |
no no wumpscut (circa bunkertor 7/embryodead) |
