Black Sabbath. For the 70s, they were much heavier than any of those bands you just listed are today.

True. Except them.

Any Halo and old Anathema are really the only times I've ever been overwhelmed with the heaviness of the recordings. Any heavy band in this day and age owes everything to Sabbath though.

it also all depends on your definition of heavy...

zeppelin had a lot of heavy parts back in their day as well

Define "heavy". The loudest? Fastest? Most distorted?

To me, "heavy" is more on the listeners part, a feeling inspired by the music. For some, Zeppelin might be the heaviest thing they ever heard. For others, Slayer. etc...

Yes. And it is not heavier than many other albums I own in the same genre. There is not an original idea on the whole disc, how could it be heavier than its forebears who created the form of music it is aping?

this is very tough; i'm sure as soon as i post this, i'll think of 10 other bands that are equally heavy or heavier for that matter.

i will definitely say black sabbath; they've been my favorite band since i was 10 or 11. listening to their first 3 albums at that age was mindnumbing. it's still an experience to listen to it now. if they had the access to some of the greatest, heaviest production that we have these days when they went in the studio, i don't think any stereo systems could handle the awesomeness.

watchmaker is one of the loudest bands i've ever seen live, though that's not exactly in the category of "heavy."

neurosis, on "locust star" to be precise, is one of the heaviest songs ever, in the sense that arrowhead discussed earlier. when the world ends, i expect to hear that song playing throughout the entire globe.

I think the word "heavy" doesn't acurately describe those kinds of bands. I think "brutal" would be more descriptive. Heavy is what you'd say about a band like Sabbath or Blue Cheer. Having an an old fart father from the 60s-70s hard rock/metal era I hear him say heavy quite a bit. Heavy isn't Brutal.

I do however, think Mindrot does have more heavy qualities to it.

The first time I heard those guys I noticed a difference between them and the death metal I had heard in the past, a style involving a certain seperation in the mix between the vocals and the music that many subsequent bands emulated. Not my favorite style by a long shot, but a notable mention for this discussion.

It's kind of impossible, as others have pointed out, to name the heaviest definitive bands in the world, because there are countless ridiculously heavy bands out there (some of which we probably haven't heard yet). So instead I took the approach of picking bands that were considered watermarks for different takes on metal that pushed the envelope in terms of heavy distortion and brutality.

Devourment is not the heaviest band that ever lived, they are a 6th generation death metal band that does the same thing 21,000 other death metal bands do, and they're not even faster or more brutal than many others in their field (assuming that is yoru criteria for considering them the heaviest).

Even though they might sound slower and not appeal to the ADD of the death metal newb of today, Slowly We Rot and Realm of Chaos were a lot fucking heavier death metal albums. A lot.

Sabbath is still the heaviest band ever, for when they first came out. Nowadays, Electric Wizard. Maybe some of the Boris records.

Devourment is not the heaviest band that ever lived, they are a 6th generation death metal band that does the same thing 21,000 other death metal bands do, and they're not even faster or more brutal than many others in their field (assuming that is yoru criteria for considering them the heaviest).

I don't think Devourment is the heaviest. I also don't think they do the same thing that 21,000 other death metal bands do.

I'd say my personal criteria for heaviness would have to be crushing brutal breakdowns maybe with some disgusting guttural vocals. It's all about the groove nigga'. The hell with speed.

Fair enough.

I guess when I think of heavy I just think of music that is both disturbing and depressing. The first time I heard Electric Wizard or Saint Vitus I wanted to hang myself it was that oppressive and depressing. The first time I heard Devourment I thought "oh, it's another guttural death metal band". Yeah, they mix it a little different than other bands but musically they are doing the same thing. It's not that I think they are bad, I just don't think they are heavy considering what's out there already.

Electric Wizard. There is that Black Sabbath again.

I've never heard an album heavier than Dopethrone. It simply hasn't happened.

Anaal Nathrakh is crushingly heavy. first time i heard "Pandemonic Hyperblast" i was scared. Everything they put out is heavy as fuck. Molesting the Decapitated was crushing too. i Think Effigy of the Forgotten is one of the heaviest albums ever. its wicked brutal now and back when it first came out, there was nothing pretty much like it. it must have been TOO brutal to listen to then.

Sorry.I just remembered,I went to take a leak right after Meat Loaf went on.The bathroom was next to the stage. When I finished peeing he was lying flat on his back on stage.I was probably high on weed.
