Looking back in 1988, Mrs. Parks said she worried that black young people took legal equality for granted.

Older blacks, she said "have tried to shield young people from what we have suffered. And in so doing, we seem to have a more complacent attitude.

"We must double and redouble our efforts to try to say to our youth, to try to give them an inspiration, an incentive and the will to study our heritage and to know what it means to be black in America today."

At a celebration in her honor that same year, she said: "I am leaving this legacy to all of you ... to bring peace, justice, equality, love and a fulfillment of what our lives should be. Without vision, the people will perish, and without courage and inspiration, dreams will die - the dream of freedom and peace."

I honestly wonder how much harsher her words would be if she was interviewed right before she died. It's really shitty that people like her fought to give freedom to a culture that so poorly mis-uses it.

that sounds like good advice for ALL people, not just blacks

Yes it does, but assimilation into free culture seems to be harder for the african americans. While newer immigrants who came here freely have difficulty as well (haitian, cape verdean, Plutonians), they've been coming here for a few dozen years. Africans were forced here hundreds of years ago, and STILL don't seem to get it. (in the majority, not everyone is like this.)

Rosa Parks took a big risk just so she could be assimilated, equal, and accepted. Now generations later, the people who benefit the most from her efforts have worked so hard to be different, isolated, and given special consideration and compensation.

Conversation at my work with a workers African-american friend.
"Yo, man, like black people can't even get jobs. Like, people still won't hire a brother like me, just because they're intimidated by the color of our skin"

"ever thought it might be the fact that you show up for the interview with your underwear and ass hanging out of your pants, like they are now?"

"Yo, you racist? You gonna treat me different because I dress black?"

"No, I'm going to treat you different because no one who comes to a restaurant to eat food is going to want to look at your ass hanging out of your pants"

"see? see what I mean? I can't help the color of my skin man..."

There are rules, and there are exceptions, but I see FAR TOO MUCH of this in the world, especially the 4 years when I worked in Brockton.

Over the life of America, Irish, Italians, Europeans, Chinese, Korean, Polish, and thousands of others have migrated here, and assimilated. They've retained their cultures, some customs, live in exclusive communities with people of their own heritage, etc... However, they've worked hard, complied or adapted to our own cultures standards, (well, except the chinese restaurants and the board of health ;), and overall learned to peacibly exist within out country. Why is it then that Africans are still screaming like they're the only people to feel different, or discriminated against? Yes, it's america. We're intolerant of what's different. We beat the irish to pulps, fucked the italians, and currently shit on africans haitians cape verdians lithuanians mexicans and anyone else we notice acting different. This is a melting pot. You're supposed to fucking MELT. If there's shit floating on the top of my soup, I skim it out. Period.

My family is Italian. We were Niggers once too. Only difference is, the word was Deigo.

Now, I look, talk, and act just like everyone else. This is assimilation, and the process of natural adaption.

good point but i think the answer to your ? is... the squeaky wheel gets the oil,the more they piss and moan the more college funds etc. they get. you cant blame them for taking advantage of the system or situation, if anything it's our fault for letting it get this far! or not asking for help ourselves....then again, if a bunch of white people marched on d.c. saying hey..WE are being discriminated against! all hell would probably break loose!

Whites, a minority still considered a majority, could not demand equality or special treatment. It would draw too much opposition from others who percieve us to already hold too much power and control. I guess looking at the countries political leaders, this assumption is understandable, but still wrong.

You're right, we can't blame people for taking advantage of a system. We can however stand on our soapboxes and lookdown our noses at them.

Rosa Parks was anything BUT a nigger. She tried hard to elevate and inspire her culture to something better, and in some ways succeeded. Just because anti-segregation backfired doesn't mean she was one of the shitbags who've abused it.
