On BYOFL I found a kid that books crust, hardcore, Thrash, and the like. I told him my band was cerebral and sent him some links.

I think there's this huge misconception of things being the same...
like Republicans all being white men, Blondes being dumb, or Punx being the same thing as Punks.
Punx is a self-labelled thing kids do. It's a goofy, mocking way of being Punk and explaining punk. Punk culture has more to do with rejection of standardized values,systems, ideals, ethics, etc than about music or any of that shit. The music is a result of the ideology and not the other way around.
That said, Punx use the music to fuel idiotic sentiments and behavior.
True punks don't need to be fucking internet idiots and display minor forms of prejudice to be punk. Punx use punk as an excuse to do things lowbrow. You don't label someone as part of the punx, they do it to themselves and even get it tattooed.
Also anyone who has said "just say you're a grind band" 1) belittles grind and 2) says that basically "cerebral" and "grind" don't fit together.
The thing is we're not a "grind" band. We're just a band. We put sounds together. When we write, we're not like "time to write a new thrash punk anthem", we think about what we're getting and what we're putting into a song. That to me is a process based off of ideas, a process with a vision. It's not "Farts would be a good way of describing how George W makes me feel!!" and all power to people that write music like that, but that's not us.
So no, I am not going to defend extreme music's right to play itself off as music to just get burnt out to and grow out of. Rather, I'm going to play in a band that can describe itself as cerebral in a way that is appropriate and not self-inflating.

The word you're looking for is progressive.
And I believe someone mentioned connotation earlier in this thread? The word "cerebral" when used as an adjective to describe oneself or one's band definitely carries a connotation of pompousness and superiority of the mind. Those "punx" clearly recognized this and decided they'd be better off without you TTOS. If you want to describe your band as cerebral, especially given as a first impression, which in this case it was, learn to accept the fact that people may not think too highly of you guys. |
