Who cares, my penis is also dual screen, and you don't see me bragging about playing with that for nine hours at a time. However, I have a mighty need for this "NINTENDO" you speak of

While I was playing HL2 I thought it was going to be a close call.. but after the hype settled down surrounding game's release and after I had a chance to replay HL2 a few times, I can say with certainty that I think doom3 is a better game.

I thought the plot for doom3 didn't let people down as much as HL2. Id software came right out and said it was going to be a remake with a little more classic storytelling in it than the original. On the other side, the original HL1 had a great plot and I was looking forward to a great continuation of it. Instead, HL2 just kind of used the same characters and mentioned the stuff from HL1 once or twice. The rest of the plot seemed like I was playing halo or something. Did anyone else keep accidentally referring to the combine as the covenant?

Also, although HL2's graphics engine is very smooth, I think Doom3's got it beat. Doom3's models and environments are just smooth as ice and manage to inch ahead of HL2. I found myself gawking at the graphics in doom a lot more than HL2. The only graphic department that has doom beat in HL2 is the water. I have a feeling the doom3 expansion id is working on is going to have some water in it with some cool effect just to 1-up valve. The lighting is obviously better in doom also. I also don't notice much difference between the two game's physics engines, besides the fact that HL2 just manages to show it off more and make it a vital part of the gameplay. Replay value for both games is probably about equal in my opinion.

I think there's still some extra hype surrounding HL2 since it only came out a couple of months ago. I think if the two game's release dates traded places people would be saying Doom3 was better. Earlier, I was saying HL2 was better but then decided to wait on voicing that opinion. I played the game until I was sick of it, then replayed Doom3, took a step back and tried to compare my overall enjoyment of both games without bias.

PS. Greg's just a fag.

I was really enjoying HL2 up to one point in the dune buggy mission, the battery puzzle. Considering how Valve emphasized the importance of physics in solving puzzles I attempted to contruct ramps for the buggy to jump over the fence. This didn't work because of an invisible wall above the fence. Then I tried using one of those magnetic mines in the place of the third battery, at first thinking it was pretty clever of Valve to make us use a charged object in place of the battery. Then I noticed that the third battery was on a fucking platform below the windmill. All I had to do was pull the platform out and the battery would fall. The simple solution probably wouldn't have bothered me as much if it were not the only solution to the puzzle.

I haven't finished the game yet so I'm still pretty into finding out what happens. Perhaps I'll cool on it once I'm done.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 1,2005 2:35pm
yeah there's a couple spots where I wasn't sure what to do so I just started stacking shit up to jump over. haha. doom3 seems a little easier to follow. The levels are designed perfectly so as to not confuse anyone. Does that make it too easy though? I dunno. I think I'd rather have a hard time shoveling shotgun slugs fast enough into flying babies than solving physics riddles.

Finished it earlier today and I'm pretty pissed off. Pissed off enough to write a blog about it, I am such a dork.

For five years people waited for Half-Life 2, myself included. I remember being amazed by PC Gamer's first world exclusive preview. Half-Life was a favorite of mine and I was eager to see the continuing adventures of Gordon Freeman. More previews came and went, the gargantuan striders were introduced (OHHHHHH!) there would be drivable vehicles (AHHHHHHH!), the living City 17 (OHHHHHHH!), and the game would have the most realistic physics ever. Essentially this meant that the player had free reign in an entire City and anything the player could imagine would be possible in the game. There were concept sketches of prospective enemies, all sorts of cool looking models for monsters and shit. There was supposed to be some rich storyline or some bullshit focusing on the battle against the evil combine overlords.

None of this came to be.

City 17 is a maze of ruins with only one path through it. In games such as GTA if you see something interesting you can do anything in your power to reach it. In HL2 if you see something interesting you can be sure to get there after you go through the headcrab infested basement of some building, up to the roof of that building, across the roof to another building, down through the headcrab infested basement of that building and out onto the street where you flee strider fire by running into ANOTHER headcrab infested basement. In all there are probably five types of ground enemies. Combine troops, fast zombies, zombies, headcrabs, and Combine Elite. Oh and let's not forget the combine gunships. Various enemies and portions of the game were cut out. Valve will say, "Well, they weren't working" but considering their failure to release HL2 in 2003 Valve most likely rushed the game to market. The rich story doesn't exist, well unless you count vague conversations with NPCs as "rich". If you want the full story you're expected to buy that book of Half-Life 2 concept art. Gameplay consists of shooting everything, occasionally stopping to solve a simple physics puzzle. Oh look a see-saw shaped contraption, I need to get up to that ledge over there and there happen to be cinder blocks all around me, I'll just place them on one end of the see-saw and up I go, fucking genius Valve! The touted facial emotions or whatever the fuck Valve called it consisted of shifty eyes during or right before action sequences and happy wide eyes during extended dialogue, then again that can be forgiven because I doubt spending five years making a computer game leaves much time to interact with actual human beings. Actually I'm wrong in saying that there is no story, something's there but it's a jumble of red herrings. OH LOOK THE G-MAN IS UP ON THAT LEDGE! HE'S WALKING DOWN THAT HALLWAY! LOOK AT THOSE ROBOT THINGS IN THE CITADEL! HL3 seriously looks like it's going to be a tremendous letdown on par with The Matrix sequels. OMG T3h G-Man is t3h ARCHITEKTS! GRODNEN FREEDMAn PHAILZ!

One positive is the inclusion of Counterstrike: Source...I guess. I'm not really a fan of CS because I'm fucking tired of the maps Dustbowl and Aztec, which seem to be the only CS maps in existence. Also, I can't stand people who bitch about the AWP or block players from buying certain weapons. If you get killed it's not because someone "cheated" by using the AWP or Automatic Shotgun it's because you suck at CounterStrike.

im at the very end of the game. i need 7 more heart pieces (i have all but two hearts) and the mirror shield. i also almost have all of the figurines as well (you unlock that a little later). to get that dog to move out of the way of the steps, you have to go into the cafe, use your cane of pacci on the big vase and shrink. then you have to cross the stream and go up to the dog and fuse kinstones with him. but you dont get the cane of pacci until you go to the next dungeon i think so just worry about getting the next element. i actually should have finished the game 4 days ago, but i had to keep putting it down and help stupid people at my arcade. i love getting paid to play DS

DS rocks but I see it going the way of vertual boy

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jan 24,2005 9:32pm edited Jan 24,2005 9:33pm
why? its not a gimmick like "vertual" boy was. the dual screens HAVE a purpose andbecause of the purpose... there are a ton of new interactive gameplay options available. like the new Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow sequel coming out for the DS in sep... the map is displayed the whole time on the top screen so you dont have to hit select to view it, thus interrupting your gameplay. also, in boss battles, once you deplete the bosses life 100%, you then have to use the stylus to draw out a seal which, if drawn close enough, seals the boss away for good. if you mess up (its not going to be impossible to do) the boss gets a little more life back and you have kill him again and draw the seal again. and metroid prime: hunters works REALLY well with the touch screen as well. using the stylus for turning and double tapping the screen to jump works flawlessly. Nintendo made this as a replacement for the gameboy advance... the virtual boy WASNT a replacement for the gameboy. Nintendo gambled with the virtual boy and lost... but they would NEVER gamble with a successor to a popular platform. so despite what people think, it isnt going to fail. and dont even worry about the PSP taking away all of the business for the DS. the PSP, while having great graphics, doesnt have much battery life and is trying to be way too many things at once for its own good. while i dont see a great future for it, it IS going to sell well mainly because the graphics are so amazing and because its sony. i have heard of numerous problems with the japanese launch PSP's. buttons becoming stuck, broken, numerous pixels going out, very low battery life... also, Nintendo has been the front runner in the portable gaming market since i was 5... they know what they are doing.

there is also a thumb thing.

it's got 2 StrongArm processors and built in wifi so I'm guessing they will try to make it into a PDA.

yeah, how well the stylus works with this game makes me really excited about the new metroid.

pros: it used the same plug as the gba sp!
battery life playing regular gba games is sick!

cons: gba games that support "sleep" don't actually sleep

idk about the ds, i watch g4 all the time and they've never really said anything great about it, all the games they review for it get horrible grades, but i want to get it for the rpgs, maybe if it goes down in price...

G4 is also a stupid misguided network that constantly cradles Sony and Microsoft's nutsacks all day long.
