Burzum - my personal favorite. the relapse of dream blooming in stagnation. mesmerizing.

Graveland - the triumpant proclaimation of ancient hatred. the celtic winter is a fucking sick album. one of the most intriguing bands I've ever heard in my life that gradually weilds a sharper sound to each release.

Immortal - the mysticism of atmosphere inspiring art. painting realms of utter desolation commanded by winter elements of total despair, bitterness, and above all else appreciation.

Burzum- the most brillant black metal i have heard ever. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is the greatest bm album for me, Varg is genius when it comes to making such epic music, if you don't have at least one album of his you should not even bother with bm

Immortal- they're like fine wine, with each album i felt abbath got more and more creative, almost a god like staitis, such a shame they're not around anymore, i breath abbath and can't wait for his solo project, "Pure Holocaust," "Damned in Black" "Sons of Northern Darkness" all great albums, the only band i listened too for months

DarkThrone- what can be said about them that hasn't already been said? the Truest band still to this day, the first 4 albums dominate, but their new stuff is just as good, "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" one of my top 5 bm albums

Mayhem- ya ya ya Maniac sucks, well fuck you! i dare you to look me straight in the eye and tell me Chimera sucked. you can't. the guys that did fucking DEATHCRUSH!!!! new and old Mayhem had that staying power and was never afraid to try something different, RIP Euronymous, Dead

Enslaved- some of the most epic black metal in the world! i'll even dare to compare them to being a bm Opeth, Below the Lights is much a brilliant album, whenever i hear them i'm in awe with the complex yet simple nature of the music, i feel like just walking for hours in the woods

Satyricon- DISGUSTING, two words: MOTHER NORTH
Frost maybe just one of the best drummers in the world, Volcano is such a mindblowing album that i discover that the more you listen too the more you enjoy and truly respect it

i think all of the old black metal bands were genious...mayhem, burzum, darkthrone, emperor being the standouts.

unforetunately, i think black metal is eating itself alive...the bm camp is splitting into factions nowadays; those who want to deviate from and build upon what the originators lay down, and those who want to emulate the originators to keep the sound true to its roots. sadly, most bands cant pull off what theyre trying to do...thats why you have idiots in neon uv corpsepaint (and totally forgetting where it all came from) and people that are so cliched you can barely even look at them without laughing.

there are some standouts though in the modern wave of bm...leviathan, xasthur, crebain and (newer) fog come to mind.

Darkthrone - started off as a death metal band and crossed over to black metal. awesome stuff for the most part. Hate Them was one of my favorite albums of last year.

Setherial - blazing terror that has a heart of fire.

Absu - technicality executed with upmost precision, power and grace that summons the discipline of wisdom.

Summoning - perhaps the most unorthodox black metal band out there. epic majestic masterpieces that climb and descend like a adventure found in novel, all carried through without nearly a single blastbeat. my intellectual reading pick.

Mercyful Fate- The King rules all.
Bathory- RIP Quorthon
Burzum- Countless trips on mushrooms were enjoyed with Burzum.
Enslaved- Brilliant. Constantly progressing and never fail to impress me.
Venom- Bloodlust is still one of my favorite songs.
Ulver- Kickass. Never know what to expect from these guys.

as for new black metal, i think the best and truest bm bands of today are- 1349 and Gorgoroth, it's a shame the rest of them are just boring

Judas Iscariot - Dethroned... is one of all time favorites. A Journey Through Visions of War is one of the most inspirational pieces I've ever heard.

i don't like too much black metal anymore, but here are some that i still like...

emperor...needs no explanation
naglfar-probably the most brutal black metal, even with some catchy shit
black dawn-blasphemy...blood for satan goddammit
old man's child-even if the new stuff is dimmu-esque, they still maintain a unique sound
diabolical masquerade-some of the best songwriting i've ever heard from a black metal band without being "too black metal"
behemoth, if you can call them 100% black metal-heavy as hell with some groove and spooky ass tones, yo...fah shizzle

Nachtmystium is a pretty good USBM band.
