Government was never meant to be a social or economic policing force. The core principals of american government were created to protect property rights, national sovereignty, and to protect individual "rights" before those in a position to fuck them. Aside from that, states were delegated all other governmental powers. The America that has proven to run most efficiently and least corruptly (and also the one drafted by our forefathers) is small federal government supervising the myriad of larger state governments.
We've had our biggest government ever for the last 20 years - and look what's happening to us.
