Mustaine co-wrote a handful of songs on Kill 'em All, and wrote a few riffs that made it onto Ride The Lightning. Cliff was responsible for the evolution between Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning; as well as the evolution between Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Mustaine was great, but most of the songs he did with Metallica were when they were still a "basic thrash band." Cliff's impact was way more significant, without him, they would have had just another bass player that doubled the guitars exactly like every other thrash bassist of the time
