Here's a crazy concept; When a child is misbehaving take away his/her favorite toy until he/she can earn it back. It teaches them value, importance, and appreciation. Of course on a very miniscule(sp.) level, but can be effective. I'm no child psychologist but praising the child for their efforts and accomplishments builds confidence and acceptance. Over time it will be obvious to them what side of mom/dad they want to see.

I'm thankful to say this is exactly how my parents raised me and my brothers. We got a few whacks on the behind every now and then, but they mainly instilled in us the idea that privileges and respect should be earned and while we've been fortunate enough to be provided with almost everything we could have wanted, we never ever took it for granted.
