I pierced my bottom lip twice (snakebites) a couple of years ago. I still have them now. I did have it pierced three times, but the labret piercing caused minor gum erosion. Supposedly, if you take it out soon enough, you may be able to regenerate from any damage. It's fine now, and not really noticable.

Basically, I just diluted listerine with water, and rinsed my mouth out after every meal, and cigarette for the first week or two. The most annoying thing were the crusty things that form around the ring while the wounds are healing. Rinse your mouth often so they don't build up. It can be slightly painful if you move the ring, and they go into the wound. My lip also swelled up at first, but eventually went down. Other than that, there were no significant infections.
