"The Return" is everything a black metal album should be. To me the first ep and album by Sodom, and first three Bathory records were the first real black metal releases. Venom, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost/HH may have an evil vibe, but I would hesitate to call it black metal. They are some of my all time favorite bands anyway. I don't really care about labelling them. Venom could be thrash, NWOBHM, or black metal. Mercyful Fate could be heavy metal, or black metal. Celtic Frost could be death metal, thrash, or black metal. When it comes to the older bands, it's subjective. Post-1990 bands usually have a sound that they go for, or fit into, but there are always exceptions.
