There are definitely varying degrees of cruelty and what one person considers cruel may not be seen as cruel to another. However, you can be sure that if there is money to be made from animals, there will be cruelty as well. Businesses that deal with animals are just that, businesses. They make money by selling their products, animals. When people stop thinking of animals as living creatures and instead consider them in terms of profits and losses, there will be cruelty. I am speaking mostly of "factory farms" because an extremely large percentage of the meat and other animal products in this country come from them. I don't know about local farms, maybe they slaughter their animals in a nice way if you think such a thing is possible. As far as fur goes, the nature of the industry is cruel. The killing of animals for fur is usually conducted by bashing their heads in or anal electrocution so as to not damage the fur. I think that PETA has no choice but to show the horrible things that happen. You can tell people these things are happening a million times but to show them is to make them really understand. I don't think it's possible to describe the suffering that some animals go through so we can have fur, boots, and steaks so actually showing it is necessary. If there weren't groups such as PETA to investigate these things, I don't even want to imagine what else would be going on. Sorry for that ridiculously long-winded post but this is one of the only topics I feel very strongly about.
