"in Atlanta... if you were wearing an article that belonged to a woman, you had to have at least three pieces of male clothing to let people know that you were male. It was against the law to impersonate a female and against the law for your hair to touch the tip of your ears or they would arrest you for female impersonation. We’d have to comb our hair up so it wouldn’t touch our ears, but other times we’d just let it hang down and we’d just have to run when we saw the police."
