Knut Magne Valle says on the album: "'Arcturian' contains elements from entire Arcturus' history and as a result it is both harder and softer than ever before. We went back to real drums, real strings and 'first take' improvised guitar solos to give it an authenticity and life that not many records tend to have these days. We worked hard to mix the old Arcturus sound into the newer material and the result was: We obtained a more homogeneous, mystic Arcturus sound picture."

You take that back! I like The Sham Mirrors, but the vocals are a little weird without Garm.
I think the issue is more that the vocals without Garm aren't weird enough. I wish they'd have gone with Haegeland on vocals. His voice is fairly normal too, but I think he's more capable of distinctive and odd patterns & delivery than what we've heard from Haestes.
Neither The Sham Mirrors or Aspera Heims Symfonia do anything for me. I tried, but they fall short.
Huh. Would not have expected that from ya, dude. With Sham Mirrors, I totally get why people don't dig it. My favorites from them are La Masquerade Infernale and Aspera Heims Symphonia. I am a bit of a Garm fanboy though so there's that.
