Pelican Movement Premiere "Light Like Before" on Vice

Recording Project of Producer Kevin McMahon (Swans, Titus Andronicus, Widowspeak, Real Estate)

Split 7" with Battle Ave. due out January 20th, 2015

New Paltz, NY's Pelican Movement is the music project of Marcata Recording owner and producer Kevin McMahon (Swans, Titus Andronic, The Walkmen Real Estate). Vice premiered the song, noting McMahon's production accomplishments and offering, "It only makes sense that his solo project is fantastic." The song comes from an upcoming split 7" together with Woodstock, NY's Battle Ave. who recently premiered their side of the single with Stereogum, introducing the world to the beauty and sprawling ambition of Jesse Alexander's indie rock collective. Due out on January 20, 2015, the combination of Pelican Movement and Battle Ave.'s music is a fitting mix of soundscape rich folk and gorgeous indie rock, with both sides recorded at McMahon's Marcata studio.

More Info on Pelican Movement:

Pelican Movement is a “fictitious supergroup” ... it is the musical performance project of Kevin McMahon, a New Paltz-based producer and owner of Marcata Recording who's work includes records by Swans, Titus Andronicus, Walkmen, and Real Estate. Conceived with long time musical partner Jerome Freeman, during a gleefully frenzied, and self indulgent time period in the mid 90's, the music was empirically crafted in Freeman's 3rd floor brownstone apartment that became McMahon's first studio, along with serving as home to an incestuous collective of bands. Presumedly, the noise and general debauchery only escaped being shut down by the police due to the tolerance of the downstairs neighbor, who was none other than up and coming producer Sean Combs. He was either very tolerant, or perhaps just never actually there...

At it's center, Pelican Movement is a sonic mess, by design an unfamiliarized orchestra, perhaps more of a dream-like emotional train wreck which is not so much live improvisation as it is spontaneous aural cinema. It's timidly grandiose cacophony was born of a decade-long writing process and has rarely been played for anyone other than artists working with McMahon - perhaps as an empathetic offering, more than it having been created with any intent to bring it to the public eye.

More Info About Battle Ave:

Battle Ave.'s music captures a serene beauty and orchestral ambiance full of dazzling texture and warm heartbreak. After releasing a full length debut, War Paint, back in 2011, Battle Ave. have re-formed with a new line-up and an expansive sound that's pretty damn breathtaking. This is indie rock of the most gentle variety and it's gorgeous to say the least.

Battle Ave. is an indie rock band formed in upstate New York in 2009. While living in Montreal, songwriter Jesse Alexander was asked to come down to play a show at SUNY Purchase, but his band had broken up when he left the country, so he teamed up with long-time collaborator Samantha Niss to write 5 meandering, fuzzy 90's alt-rock epics. 5 turned to 10, the band filled out, and they released their debut album War Paint in 2011, a loud and cathartic rollercoaster, engineered and produced by the wise sage Kevin McMahon.

The past few years have been a period of hibernation & occasional touring for the band, with an array of lineup changes and some drastic shifts in sound and direction. Most of the time was spent with McMahon in the studio, crafting a very different batch of music for their sophomore album; subtle, emotive, and atmospheric indie songs. The current lineup is Alexander on guitar and vocals, Sam Mintzer on bass, Samantha Niss on drums, Sam Nixon on keys, and Adam Stoutenburgh on guitar.
