All the so-called gluten "allergies" actually have to do with genetically modified wheat. That's why people are getting sick off wheat now where it never bothered them before.

And no, I don't eat gluten-free stuff unless it just happens to be by chance.

I agree. Maybe not in all cases, but I think the reason why it has become more common is because the wheat we're eating now is very different from the wheat that people were eating a generation ago.

The words "may" , "suspect" and "possibly" come up a lot.
"Proof" and "evidence" do not. Typical conspiracy theorist pseudo-science.

That article and the blog both link to a "study" by the Institute for Responsible Technology. Run by this dude http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Smith

I agree the sources aren't great, but it logically makes sense why more people might be getting sick from wheat-based products these days. I myself just think GMO stuff is creepy and try to avoid eating it when I can.

Then again, drinking will probably kill me far before GMOs.

Haha. indeed.
I don't seek out genetically modified foods. But I don't go out of my way to avoid them.

But I agree, the booze will likely do more damage than anything I could eat.

One of my cousins has celiac disease, and I stopped eating gluten a few months ago at her suggestion. Normally, I lack the motivation for that sort of thing, but I don't get migraines anymore, and my waist is 3 inches smaller. Now, every time I see muffins or cake, I associate it with migraines and crapping my brains out. DO NOT WANT.

I do think it's pretty stupid that gluten free has become the trendy thing, though. Health problems should not be trendy.

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Feb 20,2014 11:39am
I think you may have been developing a gluten sensitivity in the first place. I've never had a migraine or the shits from baked goods.

Meat, beer, curry and chinese food have all given me head and stomach issues. But never cake or muffins.

I ask the question even though it's very hard to prove causality, but I do agree that the timelines for GMO introduction and the celiac boom overlap quite a bit. It seems like that study that declares the link has gotten a lot of heat for being crap science, a quick search gave me this: http://www.geneticliteracyproject.org/2013...buked-by-celiac-disease-foundation/

And to echo shitcunt, evidence based findings are where it's at. I would like to know the real deal, since I have celiac disease in the family. Until a link has been established, I'll be eating cake.

I think the timeline can be explained in the same manner as the autism spectrum/vaccine argument.

Celiac's disease, and all the different levels of Autism are relatively recent discoveries. We learn more about each disease every year.

My theory, is that lots of people had social issues to Asperger's (or some other mild form of Autism) without knowing it, and now, knowing what it is, many doctors can diagnose people accurately. It's not that the disorder is more prevalent, just that we have so much more information about it.
The use of vaccines is an unrelated coincidence.

Same thing with Celiac's. I believe that, over the years, many people have been ill for - what they thought was - no apparent reason. They were ill, because they were a Celiac sufferer, or gluten allergic/intolerant. The more we learn, the better the medical and scientific communities can diagnose, the more cases of these afflictions are reported.
The rise of genetically modified foods is an unrelated coincidence.

The only evidence I have to support my theory is the fact that Celiac's has been around since the 70's and genetic modification of consumables began in 1994.

And in the case of vaccines and Autism, they discovered Autism in the 40's, Vaccinations began in 1796. If there is any connection there, it sure took a while to kick in.

I'm inclined to believe this. I have eaten food with gluten my entire life with no relative issues. Long story short, I had some fucked up symptoms starting last month and saw my doctor and an allergist. Determined that I have "developed" gluten intolerance. I was told at the last visit that beer is basically liquid gluten. That sucks. I didn't even know or care what gluten was until last week.

Gluten sensitivity is, y'know, a thing? As is celiac. (Especially for northern euros.) Pro tip: Sometimes new things happen, and - even though you don't remember them from your childhood - they are real, all the same!

Accurate. Same thing happened to my wife. Expensive and literally a pain in the ass.
