Mark the date on your calendars, ladies and gents:

Saturday, July 27th.

On this date, we'll be launching a new website and announcing between 10-15 bands that have confirmed to play MDF XII (May 22-25, 2014).

Also, in connection with the website launch and bands being announced, we'll be offering a discounted early bird special for the all day/all bands pass for MDF 2014, which would be ideal for those who wish to guarantee themselves a ticket for all days/bands and not worry about future sold out options. Only 100 of these will be available and it will save you $25-$50 in the long run.

Once again, we're now on Instagram, so feel free to follow us there @marylanddeathfest

The following bands have already confirmed for MDF XII:

AT THE GATES (Sweden)
GORGUTS (Canada)
TAAKE (Norway)
SOLSTAFIR (Iceland)
MGLA (Poland)
EXCRUCIATING TERROR
BONGRIPPER
HEMDALE
DIOCLETIAN (New Zealand)

We thought there would be more to announce today, including a band that will definitely headline one of the days, but that will take another week or two to finalize. Expect the next announcement in about 2 weeks.

Notes: At the Gates, Taake, Solstafir, and MGLA will be making exclusive US appearances at MDF.

We have a feeling many of you will ask what's going on with Carpathian Forest, so here's what's going on. We had preliminary discussion with them right after MDF XI and all parties understand what needs to be done for them to come to the US next year, but since our contact person for the band has been on vacation with no access to e-mail, we have to wait until he's back before confirming that officially. So, as of now, they are NOT confirmed, but chances are likely that they will confirm sometime soon.

I also said this year I wasn't going next year because it's too much money. But now I'm seeing At the Gates, MGLA, and Diocletian and I'm thinking about how I can swing it. Somebody let me stay in their room and give me a ride.

You logged out for that? That goes without saying.

Although if I go back in time and attend every MDF from 2008+, I totally would. But i've just never had the funds to make it happen, not having a license or a steady source of income and all that.

i'll be surprised if Taake makes it into the states, Hoest seems to get himself into trouble a lot. plus I think Homeland Security frowns upon swastika incidents.

I've wanted to see Unleashed for years. I think I'm sold on going again next year. When do they usually release the lineups (not set times) again? I'd kind of rather only go for 1-2 days instead of the entire festival, but I want to make sure I catch most of the bands I want to see.

toggletoggle post by chrisREX  at Aug 21,2013 3:42pm
They usually have all the bands booked by mid fall and announce lineups/sell tickets closer to the end of the year.

toggletoggle post by permafrost at Sep 4,2013 9:19pm
I wish tthey'd just take Taake off the list already...how are they POSSIBLY thinking Hoest can come to the states?

Decent additions, Asphyx was great a few years ago. Ulver is clertainly a weird addition, wonder which era they'll play?
Looking forward to Graves at Sea, TANKARD and Candlemass....too bad its without Messiah.

ulver is playing material from their national opera set, 2009/2010 set. I'd expect maybe one song off bergtatt, probably I troldskog faren vild if any. Mostly new stuff for sure. I'm an ulver fanboy through and through and can't wait for this but i fail to see how their new material belongs anywhere near this festival.

speaking as a biiiig believer in perdition city, blood inside, and shadows of the sun, those songs live are cringeworthy, and cuts shuffled from all those albums are just don't go together. i thought the live dvd was terrible. if ulver is going to play live they should at least play a single album, i don't know.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Sep 5,2013 12:02pm
I just don't think Ulver is all that good. even Bergtatt and Nattens Madrigal are alright at best. live they would be unbearably boring.

5 more bands have been confirmed for MDF XII!

CANCER (UK) - Exclusive US show and first time in the US since 1993.

SACRIFICE (Canada) - Exclusive US show and first time in the US since 1992.

NOCTURNUS A.D. - Playing "The Key" album in its entirety.

toggletoggle post by HookedonMetal at Sep 24,2013 6:54pm
This is really making me want to go now. Sacrifice rules live. Saw them at Keep it True 2011 and they ruled. And Tankard? Yes!

toggletoggle post by Lamp nli at Sep 24,2013 10:01pm
To the guy who said more grind, Death Toll 80k will fulfill your dreams and more. Trust me on this.

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Sep 25,2013 10:48am
Never heard of them. Will check them out.
Still, even if they rule, so far, them, Excruciating Terror and Unholy Grave is all they've got for grind so far. Just 4 or 5 more really good grind bands would be amazing.

Maybe even Revenge. I know it's technically Black Metal, but it sounds grindish

Going to see Slapshot.

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Sep 25,2013 12:35pm
Just looked again. A few more grind bands than I thought. Still, A few more would be good.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Sep 25,2013 12:56pm
Hemdale and Machetazo should fit your needs quite nicely also. I'm with you, pulling for more good grind on this. Would be miles better than seeing bullshit like Crowbar on this fest, but a guy's gotta go get lunch sometime, you know?

toggletoggle post by KEVORD  at Sep 25,2013 1:03pm
I assume any grind bands will be at a totally separate club like last year so you won't be forced to sit through "bullshit like Crowbar".

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Sep 25,2013 1:33pm
Lamp - Good call. Having time to step away to get food (or just take a break) is the only good thing about having a few bands you don't give a shit about at a fest.

Kevord - I kind of hope not, I'd like to see a lot of grind, but I don't want to risk missing Tankard, Cancer, Bongripper or Asphyx

VENUE DETAILS:

3 stages, including the 2 main stages, will be located at 545 N. High Street (Edison Parking lot), which is 1-2 blocks from the old location of Sonar. The setup at the Edison space will eliminate a variety of logistical problems and will ultimately lead to a better experience for you at MDF next year. This space has an approved capacity that is significantly higher than what we’re used to, we can open the entrance 2 hours before the first band each day, we won’t be getting in the way of the Farmers Market on Sunday, we don’t have to close off streets, and once again, we will have MORE space. In addition to adding more shaded areas, there is already existing shade here, so if it gets hot, you won’t be roasting on concrete all day. As far as parking goes, there is an enormous parking lot next to the space we’re using that you’ll be able to park at, and as always, metered parking is possible under the highway that everyone is familiar with from previous years.

On Thursday, bands will only be playing at Rams Head Live, located in the Power Plant Live! section of downtown Baltimore at 20 Market Pl. On Friday-Sunday, bands (death and black metal) will be playing at Rams Head Live between the hours of 10 pm – 2 am, (bands will conclude at the Edison parking space at 11 pm).

On Friday-Sunday, once again, we are doing a grind/hardcore/punk/crust stage at Baltimore Soundstage, located across the street from Rams Head Live at 124 Market pl. Unlike last year, bands will play here all day/night and there won’t be any large gaps between bands.

Generally speaking, this setup was the most sensible solution for us, as it allows us to book a lot of bands, give bands respectable set lengths, eliminate many issues/concerns from last year, and keep the fest close to hotels and other downtown conveniences that everyone is used to.

As early as next week, we will break everything down so you know who is playing where. We will also announce more bands at that time. We still have a few up our sleeve for the main stages, but mostly, we’re down to rounding out the Soundstage billing before being completely finished with booking.

The MDF website will be fully updated with the new band additions and venue info by the end of the day. A map that will help give you a better understanding of what you just read can be found here: http://www.marylanddeathfest.com/venues

the fact that sacrifice is playing pleases me so.

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Nov 22,2013 9:26am
Whether or not I go depends on whether or not any reasonably priced single day passes will eventually be made available, and which bands play which stages.

It's too bad they can't set it up at a place like the Palladium. 1 building, 2 stages, 1 ticket.

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Nov 22,2013 9:29am

Also, mdf has been set up as one building. It was like that for the longest time. The last one was the first not in one area with one ticket for one day.

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Nov 22,2013 12:30pm
Yeah, That was a pretty good fest. But I'm pretty sure every Palladium fest since then just got progressively worse.

Except that one year where they did an all Brutal Death fest upstairs. I don't remember all the bands, but i remember Pyrexia was the last band I saw before I crossed the threshold of blackout drunk.

I went to one MDF. 2008 (I think). Monstrosity and Nuclear Assault were the Saturday and Sunday Headliners.
Hellnation and Flesh Parade were the 2 best bands there. Fucking excellent.

I definitely liked that setup.

Not so happy with the way they're doing it now.

Maybe the scheduling will work to my advantage. Just have to wait for the final announcements.

So far the ticket options that are sold out are:

Rams Head - 3 Day (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
Rams Head - Saturday
All venues - All days (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)

And apparently the Rams Head show on Thursday is almost sold out as well.

So anyway, fuck it. I'm now considering going.

I'm pretty sure if I go, i'll just get a three day pass for Edision. I'm really indifferent about most of the Rams Head bands, and i'm unfamiliar with a good 95% of the bands playing the Soundstage.

I'll check out some of the bands on Soundstage, and the bands on Rams Head, that I don't know and if I like enough of what I hear I might try one of those tickets as well.

So we'll see what happens.

There are less than 100 tickets remaining for each day at Baltimore Soundstage.

No Triptykon, No replacement.

***********************
Statement By Tom Gabriel Warrior Regarding Triptykon's Cancellation Of The Maryland Deathfest Appearance

The greatest surrealist artist of our time, H.R. Giger, died in a tragic accident on Monday, May 12, 2014. In the wake of Giger's death, his closest friends are gathering to comfort his widow, Carmen, and to assist her in organizing Giger's funeral and his memorial service. I am one of those friends.

We are all still attempting to deal with the shock of this unexpected and extremely painful loss.

For 30 years, H.R. Giger has been my mentor. As I wrote in my eulogy, a few days ago: "At a time when almost everybody ridiculed, ignored, or even obstructed the music the then almost completely unknown Swiss underground band Hellhammer was creating, Giger listened to us, talked to us, and gave us a chance." The result was Celtic Frost's To Mega Therion album which, in turn, was the basis for all subsequent collaborations between us.

In all of his work with Celtic Frost and Triptykon, H.R. Giger was immensely generous, in spite of repeated objections of mine and countless attempts to convince him to accept proper compensation for his amazing contributions.

I have also been an assistant to H.R. Giger and his wife for seven years. I have long seen them as very close friends, even as family. We have experienced many challenging events together, and we have repeatedly taken care of each other in every conceivable manner.

I thus simply cannot and do not wish to fail to attend H.R. Giger's private funeral, and to take part in the subsequent public memorial service, to be held in one of Zurich's largest churches. Moreover, I am an integral part of the group of Giger friends who are currently involved in the difficult task of arranging these events. I cannot possibly just be a recipient. In a moment like this, I have to and wish to give as much as I possibly can.

It is an extremely unfortunate coincidence that these unexpected and tragic proceedings collide with Triptykon's planned appearance at Maryland Deathfest on May 22. We are thus regretfully forced to withdraw from the festival. Within Triptykon, we discussed the possibility of playing the concert without me, with a close friend of ours filling in on guitar and vocals. The other members of the band did not see any merit in performing as an incomplete line-up, however.

Withdrawing from Maryland Deathfest was not an easy decision to take by any means. We are disappointing our audience and the promoter of the festival, it contradicts our sense of commitment, and the band's reputation will suffer damage. We were looking forward immensely to Triptykon's return to the US. After a lengthy and expensive petition process, the US authorities granted us the required US work permits last week. Moreover, a US crew had been hired, and flights and hotels for band and crew had already been booked.

In 1985, during Celtic Frost's very first tour, I was forced to cancel three concerts due to overstrained vocals. I vowed to never let such a thing happen again and took the appropriate steps. Ever since then, I have never again been the reason for a cancellation of a concert by either Celtic Frost or Triptykon. There have been instances, in Paris and London for example, when I went onstage with Celtic Frost in spite of flu and substantial fever, in order to avoid letting down the band's fans.

It is thus utterly against my nature and my own professional demands to be the cause for Triptykon's first cancelled show. But these are truly extraordinary circumstances, caused by the death of a truly extraordinary artist and friend. I hope our audience will understand, and I apologize sincerely. And I am extremely grateful for the incredible understanding and goodwill extended to Triptykon by the promoter of Maryland Deathfest.

Tom Gabriel Warrior, Triptykon, May 19, 2014
