Word around the funderground campfire is that ESOTERIC will be performing at the next Winter is Coming fest?

I've read several interviews in the past where Greg Chandler has stated that his band would never tour the U.S. due to the cost of shipping all of their gear over + fear of loss (even though they're from England and will ship their gear over to Europe??), and a general sense of disinterest in touring here in our country.

As an appreciator of what ESOTERIC does, I'd say that this is one of the most important bits of metal news I've heard in quite some time.

If this is 100% confirmed and doesn't fall through, it looks like I'll have no choice but to attend.

Go for one band and leave fest.

Given they're playing in California in September, it's not out of the question that they'll play Winter Is Coming.

Yeah I'd like to see them too.

Yeah, they managed to get Fen to come here last time. That was sweet. Fen used Agalloch's gear though.

Shipping their gear to the US? Can't they do what most overseas bands do and just borrow or rent gear for show(s)? For headliners, especially when exclusives sometimes they can make requests to the promoters if they need something very specific for their stage/sound.

I don't know, that CA thing totally seems like something fans/bands will make a special trip for. I can't imagine them doing the same for WIC2 (or anything around New England, to be fair) unless they just tour the States.

Yeah, but not really in the same league as Esoteric!

I mean, it'd be totally awesome to see this happen and I would actually consider going just to see them, but I'm also not going to believe it until I see an official announcement from the UK end.

Haha I know but getting fen to play the US for the first time was pretty big time. Esoteric would be major league. I wouldn't buy my ticket ahead of time but if it happens, I'll totally make the drive.

That is retarded. What moron ships their gear overseas? Fucking borrow gear.

Here's the thing Blue. Greg (only remaining founding member) takes their live performances pretty seriously. Anyone who has ever heard an Esoteric record knows that there is a lot going on. They perform with three guitarists, a keyboardist, etc. I don't think he wants to have to rely upon other peoples gear because in order for them to recreate live what they do on their records, he'd need to utilize his own gear, or else they run the risk of not sounding the way they should; thus defeating the purpose of the live experience.

I hated using other peoples gear overseas...but shipping gear over is absurd. I bought a guitar over there

It's fine to share cabs but most people strictly prefer their own guitar/head. On the other hand, shipping or flying with anything over 30kg overseas is ridiculously expensive. If they are playing, I'm guessing the money made sense.

you should be able to make due perfectly fine with a guitar/bass/keyboard/whatever instrument & assorted FX processors you bring, along with the gear provided. far too many times have i had to use other peoples amps (and sometimes a guitar) when flying to assfuck wherever and 9 times out of 10 i make it sound better than they do.

im fully aware that what i look for in a setup & what esoteric look for are totally different as well.

if you cant make deal with (adequate) gear provided, youre a unprepared d-bag who has no clue what you're doing.

/end equipment rant

Does anyone know more about how/where this rumor got started? I bet there's a funny story in there somewhere...
