This segment has really been getting on my nerves lately. Why do we need a public outlet for over privelidged 20-somethings to complain about how bad they have it? All it was today was some kid who graudated from Tufts whining 'woe is me I have to wait tables, life is so hard and unfair. This - college is a hell of a racket if you're not going into STEM, law, medicine or academia...and sometimes even if you are going into a STEM field. IT is blue collar work in a way, yet demanding a Master's degree on top of a current MCSE was way too common when I was last seriously job-hunting. I'm in a field where working experience functionally counts for 10x more than any of that (network admin, no degrees beyond HS), so why demand a master's in CS for someone who won't be programming on the job beyond shell scripts?
This country is in decline. This is only the tip of the iceberg.
College is an unsustainable entity that is unaffordable except for the very wealthy (or those who are willing to carry student loan debts for eternity). And, yes it is useless except for a narrow selection of fields.
Trade school is a good option for the short term, except that I think those jobs will also go away in the next 20 years. Yeah, everyone needs to shit and be warm, but that will end when nobody has a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of.

A handful of journalism students found out that I had already worked in the field and started sucking up asking me questions about how to be successful (lol I was an intern lobbying for a part time job). I told them the only secret is to get off your ass, be willing to work for free, be willing to work long hours, all the time, be committed to always learning something new, and make a name for yourself by being the guy who'll do shit no one else wants to do.
They all made sad faces and said that it sounded terrible. I said some socially acceptable version of "life is pain, n00bz fuk off" and walked out of there with a cool ass job while they were feeling sorry for themselves.
Anyways, g2g. Gonna drink some coffee because I worked a 14 hour day between 2 jobs yesterday and I'm gonna work on a certification that my employer is paying for in my downtime. Poke me on facetime if any cool traveling journalist jobs open up.

I started working odd jobs when I was 8 and haven't stopped for more than a few months in between jobs since. I get bored if I sit around for too long and have a tough time making it through a movie. When my friends were out competing over fast food/retail jobs in high school, I was wiping old people's assholes in a nursing home and making $12/hr. I realized that healthcare was a rewarding field with a fairly stable pathway and that's how I chose the field to work in. Worked my way through high school, college, and grad school and I'm very grateful for all the opportunities that I damn-well earned. If I had been encouraged to pursue my interests in engineering/design, I would probably be building robots now. If money grew on trees, I'd be draining my creativity every day. Unfortunately, there's no safe future in music or art, so I didn't buy an education in one of those fields. Between work and music/personal life, I feel like I lead separate existences. It keeps life interesting and balanced. I think a lot of people (not just the "kids these days") aim to lead a single existence that's satisfying and fulfilling to them, and it's becoming exceedingly harder to find that anymore.
There was some talk earlier in this thread about being thankful that we have it better than some 3rd world country inhabitant, and while I agree with that in general, one should expect a higher quality of life living in a developed country. The dream of growing up to be whatever you want to be is pretty weak right now, and that's ok. There are no more applications to be astronauts in NASA these days.

The number of capable, interested people who have been talked out of pursuing science careers is ridiculous. People told me throughout my childhood and early 20s that I shouldn't chase a job in tech ("You'll work twice as hard for half the recognition," which is not totally untrue), it's only due to real love of the work and an oppositional-defiant streak that I'm here at all. But it's not just a gender thing, plenty of people have backed away slowly from STEM jobs after being told over and over again that it's not something that could possibly be enjoyable or that it isn't going to have a career track for them
My girlfriend is a scientist and there is quite a bit of BS involved in the STEM industry. Yeah there's a big job market for it, but it's so crammed with people with similar experience levels that it's basically gone the same way any other industry does when it gets a surplus like this "oh hai, we're hiring for way less than what this job should pay. don't like it? get lost and we'll find someone desperate enough to do it."

i've posted here long enough to know how the Hose works, and i try to respect him based on merit (because that's what garners respect) but despite how hard i try, i just can't. if he made the same arguments without being such a pompous cunt, he'd have some very valid points.
Not trying to be pompous, but when you are attacked regularly fpr having an opinion that falls outside of the 'elite', typically liberal mold that has taken over the RTTP community, you become a bit more pissy with your posts. My opinions are typically molded from life experience, and arguing with kids whose opinions are molded from a 'scene', make it difficult to get anything across without sounding like a douche.

I've never had pierced ears, guages, tight jeans, white belts....none of the above. My point being that most of the guys that argue with me all look exactly the same, they fit into the 'scene' mold and take on the opinions and style of everyone else within the scene and don't spout any opinions that are truly their own, based upon their life experience. They just regurgitate the same tired bullshit that every other turd in the scene has already puked up, then they call me an asshole because I don't fit their regurgitated liberal mold.
