As displayed on "Illegal Women", the Brooklyn, NY band combine lush classic rock flavor with modern progressive heaviness. Invisible Oranges' Kelly Kettering writes, "'Illegal Women' has an opening riff reminiscent of Between the Buried and Me... with hints of Coalesce blended with proggy classic rock in the vein of Rush. There's a lot going on." Decibel Magazine has recently declared, Family are "sure to be one of our favorites of 2012", noting traces of "Unsane splatter-scrape" and "Soundgarden throb" in the band's sound.
Guitarist Josh Lozano is also a member of Man's Gin (Profound Lore Records) and a former member of Jarboe's touring band. Guitarist and main songwriter Steven Gordon is a writer for the popular blog, MetalSucks.
Family's debut album, Portrait, is a concept album about a dysfunctional family that develops supernatural powers. It was recorded by Justin Mantooth at Translator Audio (Unsane, Cave In) and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Mastodon, Torche). John Lamacchia -- guitarist of Candiria, Julie Christmas, Spylacopa, Crooked Man -- makes a guest appearance on one track.
Robin Staps of German band The Ocean, will release Portrait via his own label, Pelagic Records, in Europe on October 29th. The band will release the album in the US on October 30th.
A record release show is scheduled for November 2nd at Union Pool in Brooklyn, NY.
