So far it's a pretty good game.

Commercial overheard on the radio as I passed through a shack in the game:

"If you don't buy our guns, YOU'RE FUCKING RETARDED!"

My kind of game.

LOL

I was the most hardcore PC gamer here until a year ago or so, bud. Even ditched my PC gamer subscription when every other issue was "Is PC Gaming DEAD?"

With the exception of Valve/Steam, very few developers give two shits about PC. And MOST PC releases these days are console ports, which negates the inherent advantages of PC gaming.

Also RE Borderlands 2:

I don't remember - was the music in the first game this fucking awful? The music during battle tends to border on dubstep, it's obnoxious.

the reason I stopped with PC gaming was that every single time a new game came out, I would put it in and it would tell me

"YOUR RAM IS TOO SLOW"
"YOUR DIRECT X IS TOO OLD"
"GET A BETTER VIDEO CARD FAGGOT"

You must have quit a while ago, Rev.

Now the problem is reversed. Every game is "why do I have all this power, RAM, and GPU when the game isn't going to use ANY of it?"

See: Crysis 1 vs Crysis 2.

Do I need to point out that, as always, you are the smallest segment of the gaming populous?

Yes. RTS is better on PC. So is FPS. And betamax was better than VHS. Guess what? It still died. And PC gaming is still swirling in the bowl.

Investing into a $1400 gaming rig to play 1/10th the games available on consoles is a losing proposition. Luckily the gaming rig was easily re-purposed for recording.

Not quite.. tell that to the millions and millions of people play WoW, GW2, Dota, LoL Starcraft 2... lol

Nice. You names 4 games, released over the last 10 years. And aside from WOW and SC, games that don't have "millions and millions of people" playing.

Do a search of the board, folks. You'll see I was a staunch defender of PC gaming around here just like you. It might take you a little longer to realize than I did, but again - when even PC Gamer is saying developers no longer give a shit about PC gamers... when Crysis 2 is dumbed down from day 1 of development to easier port to consoles... I could go on and on.

Without Steam and Blizzard, I think PC gaming would be completely dead already.

But hey, let's get back to talking about BL2, eh?

Yes. More content than 20 years ago. How about compared to 10 or even 5 years ago?

And again, of the newer content - how many new games take advantage of the superior processing and graphics power of PC? WOW? lol. GW2? lol.

Now how many of these games are ported from consoles, or developed along side them thus inheriting the limitations of those platforms?

I walked away from a massive investment when I finally unplugged my gaming rig. I'm not dissing PC - I'm just pointing out a fact the industry, developers, trade publications, and many fellow gamers have already figured out. Between the rise in popularity of consoles and the rise in piracy with PC games, the industry doesn't really care about you guys nearly as much anymore.

toggletoggle post by quintessence  at Sep 19,2012 6:52pm edited Sep 19,2012 6:54pm
I understand that they cater to consoles because thats what sells. All I'm saying is PC gaming is far from dead and its actually way more fun. This is coming from someone who thought having a ps3 was a way better deal than investing in a PC only to get bored with the unchallening watered down titles and build a new PC. Now i have more great games than I know what to do with, most of them PC only and have never had more fun.

Games that take of advantage of superior power?... well theres Crysis, there was Skyrim that looks infinitly better on PC and has loads of post processing mods that make it damn near look like real life... Battlefield 3, I could go on and on..

Also GW2 already sol 2 million copies. League of Legends is played by millions of people. There is a hue Esport community and it sure isnt based on console games..

Dont feel bad cause you gave up and became part of the main stream. lol

toggletoggle post by Arrow NLI at Sep 19,2012 7:09pm
Crysis was 5 years ago. Crysis 2 did NOT take advantage with the PC version.

Skyrim is a good example, as I said - thank Steam.

BF3 is another good example. But then, note the PS3 only content they offered (and got into trouble over)... despite PC being the lead platform

That's the sad part - you CAN'T go on and on.

And again - I didn't give up at all. I just prefer to play console games on a console, and got fed up with shitty console ports every time a new PC game was released.

Really, though, I can tell by the games you list you're an RPG nerd. You've got a while left to enjoy your PC, thanks to Blizzard and Steam. If you're into action, FPS, etc... - the PC has already abandoned us.

arrow, clearly you know you're right, i can pull out my old PC Accelerator mags from the 90's that spell doom for PCs just like you do. they didn't pioneer digital distribution and small developer services that consoles took a queue from.

look, i love my PS3 and there's room in my house for both. consoles come and go but so long as there has been PCs there have been games on them, pushing the capabilities of hardware, and now that macs are essentially the same platform, you're saying as more people have access to cheaper computers, there will be less games on them? that's just fuckin batty. without spending more time than i care to on this tired argument, here's a link to an article that's at least relevant to this thread:

without spending more time than i care to on this tired argument,

Clearly you've got a pretty sore ass that yet another person has abandoned PC gaming, ark.

Regarding your two above comments:

1) More people with access to cheap computers? No. People are abandoning desktops entirely, and laptops are losing steam to the tablet market. As that happens, there's LESS hardcore gamers, not more. Pretty common sense - and the industry's sales figures support it.

2) But you do spend the time, don't you? Just like a year ago I did. And Aril. And MSD. Every year that goes by, there's less of us fighting the fight. But hey, I'm not going to prove anything to you my man - let's just talk about B2 and I'll bring this topic back up in a year.

toggletoggle post by Arrow NLI at Sep 20,2012 9:50am
Also - you seem to have taken my "people still play PC" joke as an attack on the superiority of PC gaming. I had a $1400+ gaming rig. I had a shelf with around $500 in games on it. I had a $200 (at the time) gaming mouse. I took PC gaming pretty darn seriously, and STILL think it's the greater platform.

I'm not attacking the PC. I'm attacking the industry that feels the need to release crippled games or straight up console ports rather than invest into a platform that will see less sales, more piracy, and a more demanding user base.

toggletoggle post by Arrow NLI at Sep 20,2012 9:51am
Actually doing the math real quick, it was likely a lot more than $500 worth of games, sadly. I tossed a good 20-30 titles last week. (although quite a few are still in my Steam account if I ever chose to fire it up again)

toggletoggle post by ark at Sep 20,2012 9:59am
i just fail to see it. there are crippled ports sometimes, and usually they're games i don't care to play. there's point and counterpoint. valve and GOG.com are making a KILLING and have been for years. valve is shooting for linux now. ubisoft just dropped their DRM almost entirely. skyrim was the fastest selling pc game of all time. i just contend it's not diminishing, the whole market is growing. i'm just saying i will still be playing games on a PC in 30 years because it's not going anywhere. consoles can be more profitable for larger developers, but they are gated communities that have huge barriers of entry for the indie guys that are cranking out games with superior gameplay these days. in other words, open platforms attract markets.

anyway, you had a shelf of pc games? between downloads, piracy, and digital libraries, my shelf disappeared a few years ago. and goddammit, i did spend the time to argue. THANKS COFFEE

toggletoggle post by Arrow NLI at Sep 20,2012 10:07am
Yup - even with steam games I always bought the box. I thought all the boxes looked pretty on a shelf together.

A big issue with PC games, moreso than console, is the size of the user base. Hundreds, millions, whatever, it's a fickle crowd that seem to move from game to game en masse. So while the top 5 titles will always have people playing them, the smaller under-the-radar games tend to have a group that play them, then ditch when they find something else.

It got annoying because I tend to buy games a little after they've come out. Countless times trying to get a match together in Demigod, or Supreme Commander, or Supreme Commander 2, etc... - I don't tend to play the more popular RTS games. Although at their peak, SC1 + 2 were some of the coolest player-bases in all of gaming.

And the port thing is what finally drove me over the edge. Borderlands, (thanks for reminding me with that article) was just one of many games I held out to buy on PC only to watch all my friends on consoles end up with a smoother and better experience.

Hey - I'm not going to be all doom and gloom - once in a while a game comes out that makes it worth your while to get the PC version. Off the top of my head, I'd mention Dragon's Age Origins, where the PC only overhead zoom mode completely transforms the game. Or Skyrim, where the mod community brings the game to the next level and even inspire the developers.

toggletoggle post by ark at Sep 20,2012 10:24am
there ya go. i'm hearing sense now. dragon age is a good example. my pc library is just full of games i've never even touched. i'm a huge FIFA guy and it's coming out next week, i decided to go for the PC version again, because it's $40 vs $60 for PS3, i can play at a higher resolution from my couch, or on my laptop anywhere, and i won't have 11 year olds yelling "HALA MADRID" through the mic. that's a big plus.

toggletoggle post by Arrow NLI at Sep 20,2012 10:26am

really? Because the #1 FPS shooter franchise on the PC started dumbing down the PC ports of their games 3 or 4 titles ago. The #2 (I believe) franchise is now offering deals with PS3, and offering exclusive console content. And returning again to Crysis - #2 was dumbed down for console port (all 3 versions developed in tandem), despite #1 being one of the most graphically advanced games ever released on PC.

I don't play FPS on console, with a couple exceptions (like Borderlands 2). I can't aim with a controller, I prefer a mouse.

But I was never a big enough fan of FPS to keep a gaming rig going just to play a few games a month. So instead I just don't play them anymore.
