I would add Antaeus and Manilla Road, and subtract Midnight. Pretty good band but don't really care that much. I love Integrity but I could care less about seeing them at MDF. Where's the DEATH in MDF these days? Shit like Last Days of Humanity or Summoning (random, whatever) or something, not all these crust / HC bands would be way better.

I'll just put it out there, while I'm not a big crust fan, I do support this fest having some hardcore bands, some grind, some powerviolence, etc. I understand why people think this should be a metal fest but seeing as my background is more in the aforementioned genres, getting to see bands like Capitalist Casualties enhances my weekend greatly.

toggletoggle post by demondave at Jul 21,2012 5:05pm

MDF is more than just Death Metal. I dont think they are losing sight of it, but they aren't beholden to it. Luckily 'Death' is a term that doesn't look bad when other metal genres are attached. I like Black Grind Death Thrash Heavy and Doom, so it works out for me.

That being said, I'm sure they will add more Death Metal bands.

As far as the tough guy hardcore goes, I hope they are careful with that. I like crust, grind and powerviolence but I hope they see it as icing on the cake or something like that. Remember when the Hardcore and Metal Fest was hardcore and metal. Now it is all mallcore with a few pure bands (eg. traditional death or thrash or black) that can't hide the mallcore taste.

toggletoggle post by trioxin245  at Jul 21,2012 5:54pm
I didnt mean specifically death metal thats why I said LDOH and Summoning, I just meant that changing the basis for what you are to expand your fan base is the first step to Some Kind of Monster.

To be fair, the NEMAHF has about as much real hardcore as it has real metal bands. Maybe three-four real metal bands, three-four real hardcore bands.

Hardcore IS NOT the same as that modern hardcore bullshit, or is it the same as metalcore, deathcore, emocore, etc.

Personally, I prefer lineups of the festival from 2009 onwards much more than their lineups from before then because I am NOT really a big fan of death/black metal as a whole. But that's just me. But with MDF we get hardcore, sludge, doom, thrash, etc. which is all insanely awesome in my opinion.

Manilla Road is pretty amazing - I wanted to go see them in Ohio with Helstar, Exxplorer and a bunch of other bands but ended up not going. So i'm pretty happy that I have another chance to see them, even if their set will probably be no where nearly as long.

the first MR records are great but I'm most partial to Crystal Logic, Open the Gates, and The Deluge. Particularly 'crystal' and 'deluge.' Out of the Abyss was a pretty good record, not quite on par though, but it did have a song based on one of my favorite Clive Barker stories 'midnight meat train.'
Be sure to check out 'atlantis rising' and 'spiral castle' as well. They may be post-2000 but they're definitely good albums.

carcass was at the palladium 4 years ago.

yeah no shit dumbass, I almost went to that show. I was referring to written material because ross stated that Vinterland hasn't 'done' anything since 96..neither has carcass but play some live shows which is pretty much what i assume vinterland is going to do.

Exodus is a total and utter joke now. Their music is unacceptable, their live show is awful(seen them twice) and they ignore 99% of their pre-Tempo of the Damned material.

Fuck Exodus. I love their old shit, of course, but fuck them now.

Wouldn't be shocked if they only played old stuff. I assume they know the crowd they'll be playing for and I don't think the guys who run MDF would let them go up their and do a bullshit set. I heard from reliable sources that it was in Morbid Angels contract that they could only play one new song at this years fest.

Morbid Angel played two songs from the new album though, didn't they? Haha

And I know, Exodus have recently played BBB in entirety at European festivals but it's their modernized sound. Let There Be Blood is just... not particularly good and Dukes voice and stage presence is awful.

I like the newer exodus and all, but the original drummer makes the old songs sound not right. And rob dukes sucked singing the old stuff until they did the bonded by blood redo. Now he's got much better range.

toggletoggle post by demondave at Aug 19,2012 5:48pm

I love Exodus and all, but even I don't know what that Bonded By Blood remake was all about. If it HAD to exist, it should have been a second/bonus disc to a regular release. A just for fun thing. Like what Venom did with Cast In Stone.

Oh yeah, I listen to Venom material after Cronos came back. Despite that fact my Exodus opinions are valid. Don't use it against me.

toggletoggle post by boblovesmusic   at Oct 1,2012 2:45pm
We're a day early with this announcement, but we can finally let you know where MDF XI will be taking place.

In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing. We realize that it's a bit of a mind fuck to wait around for a few months just to hear that the fest is returning to the same place, but truth be told, the other places we looked at were either not able to give us a definite answer anytime soon, and/or had too many inconveniences that we did not want to put the fans through. During the venue search, it was brought to our attention that the new owners of the property were willing to collaborate with us, so we decided to go through with returning to a familiar place that is close to the hotels and conveniences of downtown Baltimore.

The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will a
llow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.
As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.

We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound. All of the bands for this stage will be included in next week's announcement on October 9th.

I always wonder how much of that "punk vs. metal" thing that supposedly happened in the 80s was a complete fabrication. It seems like punk kids had a bug up their ass and the metal dudes were down with whatever.

toggletoggle post by Thundersteel  at Oct 1,2012 7:39pm
The whole "metal vs punk" thing (assuming that was really a thing, and not something that was just fabricated for Heavy Metal Parking Lot) was kind of hypocritical if you think about it. Metallica had some really obvious punk influences in their early demos and on Kill Em All. So did Venom, Bathory, Exciter, Di'Anno era Maiden, and countless other speed/heavy/thrash bands.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Oct 1,2012 7:42pm
I've definitely heard multiple accounts both directly and indirectly that punks in the 80s were either "not supposed to like punk" or that just a lot of people hated it. That's the thing I'm saying too though, without hardcore punk you wouldn't even have thrash or any of the faster genres of metal at all. Perhaps punk kids were just mad that metalheads only got something out of the music and not the message. OH WELL

that's a chicken and egg argument, it's divergent evolution, complete incestual history. neither genre has ever had a consistent message. "metal vs. punk" smells like 80's hijinks to SELL RECORDS because all of it was big money by then.

"Just a few things that we'd like to follow up on:

As mentioned previously, accidentally left off of the list posted earlier is Massgrav (Sweden), who will be playing at Soundstage.
We'd also like to make it clear that the Ascension playing is the black metal band, the Necropsy playing is the local band from Baltimore and NOT the Finnish band, and the Infest playing is NOT from Poland. As always, if there is no country of origin listed next to the band, you can assume they are from the US.

Next Monday, multi-day passes and Thursday only tickets will be available to purchase at 12 pm (ET). There will be multi-day pass options that cover only bands playing at the former Sonar, and there will also be an option that covers all bands on all days at both venues. As mentioned previously, Soundstage will only be in use from Friday-Sunday.

We will announce who is playing the Thursday show on the 15th when tickets go on sale. We will have a list of bands for the other days complete before the end of October, which is when single day tickets for those days will go on sale."

Soundstage for me, Hellshock, Iron Lung, Sete Star Sept, and Vitamin X should all be rad. Even though I'm not into Infest reuniting, I would have no choice but to check them out. D.O.C. would probably be fun too as well as some other bands I don't know.

They should swap Rotten Sound for Gride at those stages though.

Iron Lung was great a few years ago at the pre-fest. idk though im going to try and avoid that stage all together

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Oct 15,2012 6:25pm
I'm glad they made it a no barrier stage. Iron Lung is always great live, but as far as wanting to avoid that stage, I can't blame anyone too much. There are some horrible fucking bands playing it.

"Due to the limited amount of tickets available for Soundstage (1,000/day between all ticket options), and the fact that we've had an enormous amount of tickets orders come in today, the 4-day pass that covers all bands at both venues will likely be sold out sometime this evening. We knew they'd sell fast, but we didn't expect them to last only 1 day. In fairness to those that want to see only specific bands at Soundstage, several hundred single day tickets for each day there will go on sale before the end of the month for $20/day.

Thursday only tickets and the 4-day pass for the former Sonar should last at least a week or two, but we don't know for sure. We'll flick on the warning siren when the time comes."

There's still going to be three day sonar passes, and one day sonar passes for Friday-Sunday, as well as one day passes to each day for the Soundstage.

If someone picked up a three day soundstage pass, and then picked up individual day passes for the Soundstage, it'd be like a four day all access pass - but minus Thursday. haha

Don't know how much this would cost though.

If Manilla Road, Sleep and Carcass all end up on the same day somehow, I may go down just for that one.

toggletoggle post by KEVORD  at Oct 19,2012 9:03am
The Thursday show for MDF XI is sold out. Due to some of the nasty e-mails and messages we've been reading, it is likely that you've already caught wind of this news. Do keep this in mind: Bolt Thrower prefers to play inside shows, which is the reason they were given the Thursday headlining role. It was either book them for Thursday or not book them at all. Sending us e-mails telling us to fuck off and how stupid it is to have them on Thursday isn't going to get you anywhere. A more appropriate approach would be to keep your eyes glued to our message board in the coming months, as inevitably, people must cancel their plans to attend and sell their tickets to others. Furthermore, Bolt Thrower is playing at least one other show while in the US, so MDF isn't your only option to see them.

Regarding Soundstage ticket availability - If you did not get a multi-day pass that covers Soundstage access, we will be releasing single day tickets for each day on October 31st, which is when a list of bands for each day of the festival will be posted. Consider this a fair warning if you still want access to the bands at Soundstage. Will these sell out? Yes. Will they sell out in a matter of days? We have no idea. Just go to the website on October 31st and get single day tickets for Soundstage if you want to be on the safe side.

Some of the hotels we've been in touch with aren't giving much of shit for a discount, so we're still working on it. When we have some news in this department, we'll post it.

Due to the overwhelming demand for Thursday tickets, specifically to see Bolt Thrower, we have contacted the band who are now looking into the possibility of playing a second set at MDF between Friday-Sunday.

If a second set happens, we'll let you know very soon, but do keep in mind that it would also be an inside show. The band prefers to play inside, which is why we scheduled them to headline Thursday to begin with.

Nobody, including ourselves or Bolt Thrower, expected tickets for Thursday to sell out (in only 3 days), so we are doing what we can for those of you who missed out on a ticket, and those that have 4 day passes will have an opportunity to see them twice.

Yea really. Not trying to be a downer or everything but if you took all the bands worth paying all that money to go to MD to see and put them together, it would barely even make one full day, and then on top of it, theyre all split between four days, so juust to see like the five or six worthwhile bands I would have to pay for four days worth. Let's face the facts. With all due respect to the good bands that are playing, this fest is too spread out with too many bands and a mediocre venue. It should also be 21+. They are aiming too high and want to put on the best fest in America (which they do), but it is overkill.
They have some of the best lineups and bands come over, but 4 days?

toggletoggle post by KEVORD  at Oct 29,2012 10:54am
The outdoor venue is actually a pretty cool set up. 4 days seems like a lot but it flys by. I'm old and get tired quickly and I made it all four days. I assume they have to spread it out to pay for all of the bands and keep the ticket prices some what reasonable.

MDf just made this post:

Please take note that Sleep has been moved to the Sunday show at MDF XI and will not be playing on Saturday. The band has issued a statement on the matter below.

" Sleep is honored to perform at Maryland Deathfest 2013.
Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep), Matt Pike (High On Fire, Sleep) and Jason Roeder (Neurosis, Sleep) have been carefully balancing busy touring schedules to push forward
with Sleep as a full, reunited band.

Please be advised: to facilitate the touring opportunities offered to both Om and Neurosis in May 2013, Sleep has rescheduled their appearance at MDF 2013 from Saturday May 25th to Sunday May 26th. Sleep offers humble apologies to anyone that this may inconvenience. (insert verbiage here pertaining to contingencies for those with Saturday-only tickets) We look forward to MDF and beyond.

Praise thee who accept The Iommic in thine heart

- Sleep"

REGARDING THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPANDING CAPACITY FOR THE THURSDAY SHOW AT THE FORMER SONAR:

After some recent meetings about the possibility of expanding the capacity on Thursday, we're feeling very optimistic that we will be able to release more tickets sometime in December. It is not guaranteed, but things are looking positive. If we are able to release more tickets for Thursday, we will give advance notice here, so stay tuned.

In the next couple of months, we'll be able to elaborate a bit more on how the additional space we have access to around the former Sonar will be used. We'll also post a labeled map to help newcomers to MDF get acquainted with the area of the festival, including the easiest, most direct route between the former Sonar and Baltimore Soundstage. The walk between the two venues is an easy, quick 1/2 mile walk that takes less than 10 minutes.

The last of the Friday and Sunday tickets for Baltimore Soundstage are still available on the MDF website. The Saturday show at Soundstage is sold out.

A flyer is in the works and will be available for you to look at sometime soon.

That's because the whole fest is outside/tented this year. Atleast that gives ample time to hit the strip clubs

The weather is shaping up to be totally reasonable this year. Thursday forecast is in the 80s and the rest of the weekend is 70s. Unfuckingreal. An MDF where you aren't about to pass out from heat exhaustion and dehydration is one I've never experienced.
