Peter Gibbons loathes his job. He is overworked, under stimulated and under appreciated.
His outlook on life is about to change, however. After seeing a hypnotherapist who dies before releasing Peter from his command, he ends up living his life based on this doctor’s last command: to relax deeply and completely.
Peter decides that while he hates his job, he isn’t going to quit, but simply isn’t going to go to it anymore. Somehow he survives a vicious round of layoffs, though his closest co-workers (the unfortunately named Michael Bolton and the eternally frustrated Samir Nagheenanajar) get “let go”. Together they hatch a plot - not too dissimilar to what happens in Superman 3 - to unleash a computer virus that will rob their greedy company without anyone knowing.
With this foolproof plan in place, life is looking up for everyone, but a tiny punctuation error results in disaster.
The first feature film from Mike Judge (Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill), based on his own Milton animated shorts, was an instant cult favorite and spawned numerous “pink slip parties”.
