Only rehashing Mercyful Fate but in a less talented way is real. That being said, I like Ghost, but they aren't the best band since Sliced Bread.
As a matter of fact, Sliced Bread has better organ parts.
I'm not saying Ghost is the best band in the world. But I'd rather listen to their music than the other trendy Neurosis ripoffs, boring black metal, Swedish death ripoffs, and prog bullshit that magazines like Decibel think are blazing new paths in metal.
your ghost fans are my watain fans. But I will never really give a shit. thinkkking in trends are for the anti-trendy which is trendy. haha, no matter what anyone does, ITS GAY!!!

I would agree as well, although I hear slices of MF and obviously KD.
Fact: If King Diamond had a Saturday morning cartoon show where he drove around in a van solving wacky mysteries, Ghost is what the theme music would sound like. That is all.

Sorry, never heard Ghost, but failing to see any "trend" in it either... What am I allegedly missing?

Ha.. You're not the first to say that!
I am absolutely the first to say that, and I challenge anyone to a monkey knife fight who says otherwise.
yeah i have no idea what this fascination with Ghost is.

they got the retro protodoom/classic rock sound right, accessible rocknroll with many satanisms. so of course a lot of people will like it, even your girlfriends.
Fifth song on the s/t the singer sounds like Weird Al which is lulzworthy
File under girlfriend metal, along with Kylesa, later Isis and The Sword.
GIRLFRIEND METAL? That's Fucking perfect. Music to show your girlfriend to brainwash her, or the "metal" she already likes. If girl is not your girlfriend she gets downgraded to VH1 classic channel educated metal bitch.

Ghost isn't too bad. Didn't know how popular they were until recently. But I don't fucking understand how a stonerish band would take the name of the awesome psych/stoner band from Japan who pretty much was that scene in the mid 90s. So either they are kind of stoner rock poseurs or just pretenious asssholes.
I really can't decide if I like this band or not. Some of it feels like a big joke to me which makes me like it. I dont get the Mercyful Fate comparisons at all.... IT kind of reminds me of scooby do music with guitar leads and upbeat 80's arena rock vocals about satan..

I keep hearing Ghost compared to Mercyful Fate.
I love Mercyful Fate, and I hear very, very little Mercyful Fate in what Ghost do. Mercyful Fate were a METAL band, heavily influenced by Judas Priest and the whole NWOBHM movement.
Mostly, what I hear listening to Ghost are very, very well constructed pop songs with lyrics about satan. Which makes sense, considering that they were an existing Swedish pop band that decided to put on masks and makeup and sing about satan.
The dominant influence I hear in Ghost's songs is Blue Oyster Cult. That's a good thing; I'm glad someone stopped rehashing Black Sabbath, and looked around for other influences. Along with that, there's a slightly metallic riff from time to time, and plenty of influence from 70's AOR, the staples of classic rock today.
I would say that Ghost is more influenced by ABBA than Mercyful Fate.
Haters are gonna hate, but if you're hearing a "Mercyful Fate rehash", you either need to get your ears cleaned out, or start listening to some actual metal.
Mercyful Fate worship done proper = In Solitude, Portrait.
That is all for today, thanks for you time, and listen to metal, for the children...
At first listen, the guitar riffage is nothing like Mercyful Fate (and rightfully so, MF is untouchable and more NWOBM, you're right). But at first glance, their artistic output visually seems to be heavily inspired by that of King Diamond's. No, they dont look the same, but it should be evident who he is influenced by, both by the tone he sets and by his lyrical output, although short and simple. There are some similarities in overall artistic outlook, but i'm more or less talking about who they try to portray themselves as, in a modern sense. Blue Oyster Cult, abd some Deep Purple are good comparisons to their music, as well as other bands that had their heyday in the 70s.
That being said, I'll gladly listen to 70s metal/proto metal and 70s prog any day to Ghost.
While being a breath of fresh air in some regards, it's easy to draw the King Diamond comparison, regardless of how close (or lack thereof) the music is.
lol @ people getting riled up over Mercyful Fate "comparisons"
Don't Break the Oath > anything Ghost will ever do. And most bands for that matter.

haha this is probably the best thing this band does
I'm sitting in a pub in Portland, ME and my girlfriend goes "girlfriend metal shirt!" I look over and an old guy has just hobbled in wearing a ghost shirt.

Vestal Claret rules. I did guest vocals for two songs on their latest record.
And YES, they sound like MF. Not the riffs, the recording is a direct piece of tribute for sure. The tones, ambiance, and mood. These guys write awesome hook riffs, but they aren't Hank.
The biggest thing that keep these guys from being super awesome to me is the stupid, cheesy, gimmicky satanic lyrics. I actually feel embarrassed listening to them because of it. I NEVER had that problem with MF.
This whole thread just seems like crying over their quick jump to popularity more then their music. Mercyful fate= Awesome. Blue Oyster Cult= Awesome. Scooby Doo= Awesome. NWOBHM = Awesome. Ghost= Milkshake of Awesome
I like them because I like what I fucking like. Don't need no buttdart arbiter of "true" to tell me what's what. That's why I AAARRRGGGHH and make the Satanisms.
Why does it have to be better? You can't like both?
So far the stuff people have posted is pretty cool. My speaker is doing some weird shitty humming right now, so I'm gonna come back tomorrow and listen to some more once I fix it.
I don't really consider Ghost to be prog, though. I think we're off on a (really cool) tangent. Here comes the sun really makes me realize that Ghost sounds like Blue Oyster + Mercyful Fate + Beatles pop songs.
It's actually a really cool group of influences. I just wish they'd drop the cheesy satanism lyrics, or at least make them less CHEESY.

I do. It's not a question of what's better, considering the recordings are 40 years apart. That's just ludicrous. I'm hoping the people that dig Ghost but don't really listen to that much 70s music actually start listening to 70s music.
The amount of talent and artistic integrity of bands in the 70s is unmatched.

Agreed, they aren't prog. I've seen people describe them as a progressive metal band. I don't agree with that at all. Most "prog" bands from the 70s incorporated some sort of organ or moog synth, therefore I guess the connection is drawn.
As far as the MF connection is made, I can see what Eye was saying, but also see the other side of the argument. I think the vocalists' main influence is KD and MF, whereas the music is definitely not, although with slight hints here and there.

If that is Ghost and that is metal, then I think they would be good back a few decades. If you like it good, but wow, I think their image is heavier then their music.
Yeah, they aren't really heavy at all, I don't think that's the point.
For Goblin, definitely check out their soundtrack work. The soundtrack they did to the Italian version of Dawn Of The Dead (aka Zombie over there) is excellent.

That's why it's good NOW. They have a classic sound that's been sorely missed for a few decades. Thus the Mercyful Fate comparisons. It's not the riffs, it's the recording and sound. If Kurt Ballou or someone recorded the next Ghost album, I bet half as many people would give a shit.

it's actually called 'Zombi'. The farther they get into the 80's the more keyboard-driven their stuff gets. Check out the 2-disc 'The Fantastic Journey of Goblin' set; 2nd disc is live
Eyehatehippies, do you buy your 70s vinyl in Northhampton? I've been to a few cool shops out there; I know there's some around. I got some King Crimson vinyls up in Brattleboro VT years ago. I've always enjoyed those areas because of the music, art, and book shops.

I've heard of sunset but never checked it out. Franks, never heard. I'm assuming they have other formats as well? I'll take my pops there, but he doesn't do vinyl anymore.. Sigh
Thought Ghost were pretty awful live @ MDF. I'm a fan of the album, but live they turned me off so much I walked out after the 3rd song. It's possible they improved as the set went on (I've seen other bands do it) but what I saw was boring, sounded shitty, looked goofy and seemed to involve vocal guide tracks if not straight lipsynching at points.

Yeah, some of it. There's a really great record shop for that kind of stuff, Feeding Tube Records, down on King Street.
Usually, it's more noise/experimental oriented, as that's the scene around Northampton. However, they got a HUGE batch of metal and hardcore stuff in, I got some great finds, and there are some even better ones. It's been cleaned through pretty well, my friends and I got most of the really cool stuff like first press Discharge LP's, Testament LP's, but there's still a lot of great stuff remaining, including but not limited to:
Nuclear Death - Bride Of Insect LP
Neurosis - Pain Of Mind LP
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare
Therion - Of Darkness
Those were all still there last time I went, plus some other cool punk, hardcore, crossover, and metal stuff as well.
They have a pretty solid selection of 60's and 70's rock, krautrock, etc.
Take commuter rail and sure, no prob. Otherwise I'd have to drive up to the city, then drive back down, the back up, the back down again. Blessed Offal personal chauffeur ftw.

They probably use triggered backing vocals. They do sound terrible live from this recording. Celtic Frost sounded terrible live and I still enjoy their albums so this doesn't make me enjoy the Ghost album any less. I sound like I'm Ghosts biggest fan which I'm not. I just refuse to hate on a band that everyone had a boner over six months ago cause they're not troo now.
i hadn't listened to the ghost album in a while and this thread made me want to listen to it again. sure, it's not as good as classic MF/KD/BOC stuff, but like Kevin said earlier in the thread, i'd rather listen to ghost than some black/death retread. i still think the songs are well written and the musicianship is good.
when has some one hated on ghost that previously liked them 6 months ago? personally, I still enjoy them, but am only being realistic because they seem to be a fad at the moment and have the overnighters' attention. i like music for music, but calling out a trend is LULZ worthy on rttp because of panties being ruffled.
In before Ghost changes their style to black metal.
post by arilliusbm at May 31,2011 4:35pm edited May 31,2011 4:40pm
In a subtle way, this is a joke thread (for those who haven't noticed) and serves three purposes:
1.) Promotion for the MDF headline show, as well as the show tomorrow night? Check
2.) Calling something a trend for the sole reason of ruffling panties on rttp because I could give two fucks what you homos actually care about.
check
3.) Being a typical arilliusbm douchebag
check
and the forth and most important reason:
all people who enjoy Ghost but don't care to delve into their influences as well as other 70s music should do so. otherwise you're just an overnighter fenriz trendwhore. :P
I still can't see the MF/KD comparisons. I don't get the heavy/speed/black metal vibe from Ghost that I do from the King. Maybe the theatrics and lyrics are similar but Ghost's sound is "older" for lack of a better word. Way more BOC/Deep Purple/Blackmore/Steppenwolf? stuff I hear in Ghost.
The lyrics and delivery range from sinister to cheese in just a few seconds but we're talking about metal here...Ghost has some seriously rocking hooks. Sathanas / We Are One / Out Of Three / Trinity gets me every time baby. Good thread Jim, didn't read.
Tried watching this band at MDF to see if I'd enjoy their music more live. Negative. In fact, I probably enjoy it less now. Can't help but think of them as a PG-13 version of whatever a "Satanic Rock Band" is supposed to be. They're not terrible, yet they don't seem to exhibit the qualities their bulk fan base thinks makes them appealing. Thank fuck for Pagan Altar -- my eternal source of occult and decidedly ghostly vibes.
So who exactly are these people that like GHOST but refuse to check out their influences? And since when did organs on top of Heavy Metal = 70's Prog Rock???
This thread is one big straw man.
post by lostark at May 31,2011 4:54pm
yeah, not denying i might have to be on some occult droogs to enjoy them live, i'll see when the time comes.

Your first question does not garner a response. You should know what hipsters are by now, city boy.
70s Prog Rock is notorious for use of organ. It seems people enjoy Ghost's use of the organ.. why not listen to 70s prog rock as well as 70s proto metal and/or metal? I don't see what the big deal is.

i understand. they are becoming really popular, as evidenced by the old guy i saw the other day with the ghost shirt and the singer of amorphis appearing on the cover of a magazine in a ghost shirt. everyone's talking about ghost.
what's wrong with this thread? a bunch of insignificant opinions about Ghost, followed by prog rock recommendations, unveiling of an awesome vinyl spot, with just a pinch of butthurt...it's a good thread.

I thought Ghost was really good, i was only familiar with a few songs before seeing them live and i was impressed -
I stood next to Wren the whole time during their set and he knew every word and was singing perfectly to it - kids' got a set of pipes on him! - he was awesome!!!
I thought the sound was superb (they share Electric Wizard's sound tech, dude from Greece) and after watching them live and hearing the record afterwards, i totally remembered the songs from the previous night, that kinda shit never happens with me, - the tunes are good, nice guitar work, i dig the harmonies, i aint gonna lie -
i dont know what they're doing, but, it seems, they're doing it right...
Btw, Ghost is actually the band REPUGNANT, who also played earlier in the day - they share the same management etc etc and if you do enough snooping around online, you'll see connections, could be true or false if they are in fact Repugnant -
My guess is Ghost is a band that was maybe "put together" by someone else with the vision of what they are now - alot of hype for a band that only has a total of what? an hour's worth of music??
Haters gonna hate - i enjoy the record and their music for now - until they turn poppy and gay, which will more than likely happen....
And yes, they were definately using back up vocal samples and it was off on the first song
I consider my involvement with this thread one of the landmark achievements of my life.
If even ONE person who enjoys the music of Ghost read this thread and then checked out the music of Blue Oyster Cult, then all this bullshit was worth it.
It's true, when you get old enough you'll see that every band is a rehash of other (usually better) bands from other eras. Know your history is all I ask.
Stopped reading this thread a while ago. Stoked for tomorrow. F the buttdarts; you're all wiggers who don't even listen to Ice-T "Power" or the Geto Boys

I thought it was just the singer that was in Repugnant. (I suppose it could be the entire band, as far as I know the singer's the closest to being "confirmed")

OFFICIAL END OF THREAD
True. After all, bullshit aside, Internet forums are made for discussion. This thread may be dumb, but it sure made people want to discuss something. Regardless of subject matter, a healthy discussion on a popular band right now with vital points all around = better than most discussions happening on this forum. Glad you brought BOC up in here.

Also, one giant LOL @ MillenialKingdom.. Did you really have those memes of you deleted from TinyPic? That's worse than people who call bands trendy on Internet forums.
Their debut is a great album, didn't care for the second and stopped paying attention to them there. The Deftones tour is more amusing than offensive, it will be interesting to see how hard they can sell out.
