I just read online that Tama has notified dealers it is discontinuing their Iron Cobra line. It the entire drumming world being taken over by direct-drive pedals? What the hell is so special about them?

I always though the cobras would be around forever.

Luckily I've got my Pearl Eliminators, so I'm set for a while. Especially with my shitty drumming.

i recently bought a speed cobra. i read that tama would not discontinue the iron cobra in favor of the new model.

also the speed cobra is chain driven, not direct drive. dont think tama has a direct drive pedal.

Don't worry. Their new shit will break too.

I could be wrong, what I heard was they were going to have the speed cobra, discontinue Iron Cobra, and introduce a direct drive model.

I still don't see the whole ruckus about direct drive. But then, I'm a slow as shit drummer anyway. Especially trying to learn heal-down so I don't piss off my neighbors.

my iron cobra is 10 years old, rusty as fuck, have not fixed or adjusted anything on it ever after i moved the beaters up and raised the footboard a little and still make it go fast as fuck. after the last few weeks, i doubt i'll have any problems with me speed cobra either.

What's new about the speed cobras?

toggletoggle post by josh_hates_you  at Mar 24,2011 8:01pm
not much, slight redesigns here and there. new bearings, longer footboard, lighter materials, slightly more rounded cam (the old one was made so that the beater would speed up as it got closer to the head, this has smoother more natural action. the footboard sits back a little so the chain is not straight up and down which pulls the cam faster.

i really like it so far. smooth like a dw 9000 or an axis but still has that power of the classic iron cobra. all the advertisement junk for the speed cobra are about increasing speed without sacrificing power. i agree. it's pretty sweet.

I'm actually looking to SACRIFICE a lot of power. Problem is, even on the electronic kit my bass drums are loud as shit when I try to do double bass. I've always been happy with my Pearl Pedals, but I'm looking into some new options to reduce noise.

play with your feet further back on the pedals. adjust the setting of your pedal. raise the foot board, move the beater forward and tighten the springs.

I liked my DW 5000 double pedal for a while until a crucial hinge broke, that was totally repairable but instead I opted for 2 kicks. I will never part with my single Iron Cobra felt strap driven powerslides whatever they fuck they are. My favorite pedals ever.

I've owned 3 Iron Cobras:
-I bought the first one new, and broke it in a year and a half.
-I used the warranty and got a 2nd new one.. which also broke within two years.
-I then found a "like new" Iron Cobra on EBAY, bought it... and broke it within a year.
-I then used parts from all three to make frankenpedal, which lasted roughly another year.
(keep in mind, that when the first one broke, i tried replacing parts, but found out the warranty would be free, so i just did that and kept the old one for parts. When THAT one broke, i replaced the crossbar that connects the slave to the master, and then broke the joints that connect that bar to the actual pedals. That's when i found the cheap used one on EBAY.)

-Then i switched to DW9000's, (which i still use for Useful Idiot) which I have broken, fix'd, sold, and re-bought a different pair. I originally sold them 'cause i figured i would just adjust the AXIS that I bought for both my bands, but soon found out that I didn't like having to fine tune all of the adjustments on the Axis before and after every U.I. practice, so i purchased MikeMENSTRUAL's set of DW9000's... which i'm still using for U.I.

The AXIS pedals have also broken... twice... but both times AXIS overnighted me the parts for free under warranty. I have broken the EKITS a couple times too, but we're not really comparing those in this thread.

I've also owned one pearl eliminator, and one gibraltar pedal. Both were adequate, and i broke both... i just didn't like either of them enough to try to fix them instead of replacing them with a different pedal.

Just so i'm totally clear, the EXACT SAME thing has happened to every pedal i've owned. The "ball" joint that connects the crossbar to both the slave and the master has broken. It makes sense, i think because you almost ALWAYS have the slave pedal at a slightly different angle than the master, that puts a LOT of the energy of every hit on that joint. Which if you play enough, will break no matter what pedal you get.

I guess what i'm trying to say is.. they ALL break. It's just a matter of which pedals you like using.

You guys should be more careful with your things.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Mar 25,2011 9:36am
I suggest plastic slipcases for all your kick pedals so you don't get stains on them.

So why did you need different settings for each band? What is the difference? I'm trying to learn what's up with this stuff, since I've been playing a lot more drums lately.

Because with Boarcorpse I use triggers, and have to do much faster and more complicated patterns... in other words, when playing with UI, I would use big heavy rubber DW beaters, all the way up, and about 7inches from the head. I do this because i want the biggest stroke possible so that i get a huge sound.. i would do this with Boarcorpse, but A) I can't pull off the parts in Boarcorpse with the beaters that far back, I've gotten them significantly farther back than they were, but they're about 4.5 inches from the head now. Not only that, but when using the triggers, you NEED to use the beaters that come with it, which are a very different shape than any other beaters i've used. They have not just a metal bar that goes up with the head on it, but it's a bar that goes up, then one that's perpendicular to it, while being on the top of it.. and THAT bar has the beater head on it. It looks like a T when you have that bar adjusted to the middle. If you don't use this while using the EKIT triggers, you'll ruin you're ekits, it's very hard to explain why, and i had to learn about it by ruining my first pair... when i called AXIS to replace them they said my theory was correct, and that you HAVE to use their beaters with the EKITS. Those beaters are much lighter, but now i've found that by cranking the tension way up with them, and keeping the fairly far from the head, i can still get considerable power while playing BC, as long as I focus on my posture and make sure i don't bury the beaters.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 25,2011 1:22pm
Oh. So the triggers in the Axis are built into them? I'm already using triggers (e-kit), but I may be able to just switch to a rubber pad or something and get the Axis to do the triggering. Might reduce a LOT of the noise. How accurate are the triggers? Do you miss hits, or get ghost hits?

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Mar 25,2011 1:28pm
When i say EKIT, i'm specifically referring to an attachment to the pedal that moves with the beaters, and you set it so that the detonators hit the plate at the same time your beaters hit the head. Technically, if the trigger is on the drums, it's called an acoustic trigger, and not an EKIT.

They're not perfect, and the AXIS pedals take a LONG ASS time to get used to, because there's so much to adjust on them that's not like any other pedal... but they trigger much much more accurately than any of the acoustic triggers i've tried, and i've tried 3 different brands of those. It's seriously a WORLD of difference, i playing on the accoustic triggers made me think i should give up trying to be fast because they missed so many hits..... well, the AXIS made me wanna quit drums for the first couple months cause it was so different, and hard to get used to, but now that i'm comfortable with it, it can accurately track my playing to a "T". I love them, but i honest to fucking god play for at least 3 hours a day, usually a lot more than that, and it still took me almost 3 months before i was comfortable with them.

i have had an incredible life span out of my Trick Bigfoots. i've had them about 2 and a half years now and havent broken anything. I was having some issues with them for a bit until i re-adjusted the entire pedal and started from scratch. i called the company because i was having some issues with too much play on the drive shaft, but turns out it wasnt the drive shaft and i just need to replace the attachment that turns the master pedal into a double pedal (adding an attachment that not only attaches the second beater but connects to the drive shaft for the slave pedal) it wobbles but i just need to get that small part replaced and they will be good as new. they were pretty adamant about the fact that i CANNOT break anything on these pedals, and by cannot, i mean physicaly it wont let me. the drive shaft and assembly seem to be the only thinks breakable. the pedal itself uses a compression spring which they assured me will never have to be replaced.

been digging my new AXIS pedals, and was originally considering the idea of selling my Tricks, but now that i have gotten the settings to a more comfortable level, i have been able to get even more power out of them than i ever have.

I was WRONG, they didn't discontinue it. They just re-designed it a little.

who cares? every iron cobra i've played sucks, IMHO
DW5000 or GTFO
i got the chance to play hellbastards axis singles for the first half of this tour, i wasnt super impressed, but i feel like if i got used to them theyd be pretty sweet, still, i like my old dws more than anything else
